Does this 7 wood make me look old?

My cheapy 7 wood is the most loyal club in my bag. From 200 yards, it's money every time. I wish I had more clubs I was that comfortable with. I wouldn't give up my 7 wood for anything.

Love the title on your post and would have to say it doesn't matter what you look like if you are shooting par!
I'm thinking of digging my trusty 7 wood out of the basement and doing a little comparison on the range.

I've got an old Powerbilt TPS 9-1-1 which is 23 degrees, but has a 3-wood length shaft. I love it! I use it from about 220 to 240ish. It's great out of the rough, too. It kinda depends on the lie. I am not comfortable hitting a wood off a tight lie. I have never tried a hybrid, but would like to. On a reachable par 5 I love to call 9-1-1!

Good to see all these people coming out of the closet like this .... :)
I think we should petition Erik to create an 'old fogies' forum. There's clearly enough interest to get it going.
[only kidding]

I'll start the first thread, entitled "Is there (golfing) life after 60?". Of course for me it would be pure speculation.

My 5W is probably my most dependable distance club on the fairway. Why not go back to the 7W and ditch the 3 hybrid?

I think we were suckered in by golf marketing dept telling us the hybrid was the "new best thing". Bastards! My 4 wood has been money ever since I bought it and the 3 wood has finally come around once I quit trying to hit it so hard.

When I first started playing the set of clubs my cousin lent me included a Callaway 7w Heavenwood. While checking out my clubs my friends saw it, they laughed told me to leave it in the trunk and to get some hybrids. I listened to them since I didn't know anything about playing golf at the time, but was bummed since I could hit the 7w pretty good then.

I've always wondered why people care what others think about what's in their bag. If it makes my game better, I'm going to carry it. That's why I carry a $20 7 wood beside a $200 4 Wood.

I had just started playing and deferred to them since they all had played for years. The logic made sense since I don't recall many PGA players using one, so I figured since the clubs were from my cousins dad, they were old. If it happened today, I'd have ignored them and left the 7w in my bag. As it stands I bought new hybrids and hit them as well, so I don't need the 7w now.

That's all there is. After my wife watched the World Cup interview with the Argentina coach who stressed how sex on game day mornings really helped his guys play better, I told her I could win more money on golf days too. Said she would give me the money.

Just kidding (whew). Been looking for a 7 wood all summer in the resale shops. Maybe after this thread, some will appear.

In the big picture, it doesn't matter how it looks in the bag or on the course - what matters is how it looks on the scorecard! IMO, if you have a club that's "money", play it and let others say what they want.

I try not to care about what others think but I do at times being mindful of others people's perception of me. I think most people would be lying if they didn't say so. Exmaple, first tee nerves come from fear of how the gallery looking on will perceive you as a player.

I guess I was feeling like I would be compromising my competitive nature by not hitting more challenging clubs. I feel I should be able to hit long irons reasonably well and feel like I am playing the game and cutting some corners if I do not go with the 3 iron. I just love hitting my FWs though.

You are not cutting corners until you use the Niblick.

Don't make the game harder than it is and play to your strengths even if that means adding a 7 wood. Many pros have found more consistency and versatility by going without a 3 iron. I only carry a 3 iron for par 3's, short/tight par 4's, and doglegs where I can tee the ball up.

One of golf's greats, Lee Trevino, said his favorite club was his 7 wood. No stigma worries for Lee and there should be none for anyone. I love the old Calaway steelhead 7 woods. One of the best utility clubs ever made.

Several tour pros carried a 7-wood in the days before the hybrids came on strong.

If you can hit your fairway woods and don't really like hybrids or long irons, then a 3-5-7 can be an effective bag mix. If you can score with the 7W, use it to take lunch money away from the youngbloods!
