I think you touched on the source of great animosity for JD. Folks are jealous of his talents and abilities.

No.

It's much simpler than that. If you were playing with a 20 marker and after 3 holes he stopped lining up 6 footers and was three putting from inside 20 feet half the time because he stopped caring you'd never want to play with him again. When Daly does the same thing on a sponsor's exemption, you lose a lot of respect for him because he's an immature jerk. He has very little respect fot other people on the golf course, especially those who are now subsidising him. Yes, they get value for money if he makes a cut, but when he doesn't he gives up very early. No-one denies his talent. The fact that he has 2 majors and can be exciting to watch is beside the point.

In the race of life, always back self-interest. At least you know it's trying.

No.

I feel the same way every time Tiger throws his club to the ground.

They are just people man. They are just people that play golf.

You are comparing apples to oranges with that statement. Tiger has won 14 majors and 97 professional wins. Further to that, I can probably count 1 or 2 times Tiger "gave up" since he was a rookie. Tiger expects excellence everytime he enters a tournament which is the cause of his anger on the course...please keep in mind that others on the PGA act the same way which we don't see because the camera isn't on their every shot..

As for John Daly, I used to love him but I am now officially done with him.

I agree....the main thing I don't like is the 'giving up' part.

I keep hearing he wasted it away. I am sorry. The average person that is hit with lightening in one aspect of ability/life does not always hit it over the fence in all aspects. We all know golf is not a 100% physical ability game. John was blessed with that raw physical ability. He is not much different than the gifted artist that can't balance his/her checkbook.

No, not really. JD and Tiger are both talented golfers with chaotic personal live's. I think the average "fan" forgets that these guys are just people. God status puts folks on pedestals they are surely to fall from. If you just think of them as people (which they are) you might have more realistic expectations. -Dan

Exactly! Add to that the fact that he was supposedly paid a $200k appearance fee for playing at that tournament and it just plain pisses you off!

Well put. It pissed me off too. Simply because Australia has always welcomed him back again and again then to give up like that.... Give that spot to a kid who would give his left nut for that opportunity.

What are you trying to say here?  The point is that John Daly's attitude sucks, period. With all of the sponsor exemptions and "chances" that people have given him because they feel sorry by his constant sulking is tiring at best.  Is he a talented golfer, yes.  Is he a destructive individual who can't get out of his own way yes.  Do both him and tiger have struggles in their personal lives, yes; however, the root of the point is that John Daly has been a sulk and self destructing individual for 15+ years and the "god" like status of his "talent" that you mention is why we all continue to feel sorry for him.  At some point, he has to look in the mirror.  Yes, athletes are people but just because they are "athletes" doesn't mean that I should instantly feel sorry for them.  Heck, most people are more forgiving to self destructive athletes than homeless people with limited opportunities who really have REAL issues.  So I aruge that you are the one who gives in to the God like status of John Daly.

I offer no god like status to anyone. You missed my point entirely. I don't care if Tiger ever wins again. I don't care if John Daly ever makes another cut. They are just people and people fail, disappoint, etc.. That doesn't mean that I want them to fail. But let's be honest here, these guys play golf for a living. I personally respect police officers and school teachers more. I am just saying that there is no reason to bash someone because you think they give up, or let you down, don't play well, and such. JD has had tons of success with golf and earned millions. He can piss it away if he wants to. Same as you and I can make mistakes and have personal and professional failures. The "god like status" in my opinion is why many folks seem so let down when a professional athlete falls on their face. I on the other hand never expected as much. Put folks on a pedestal, they will all fall in some way. #2 understands this I am certain. JD is no exception.

The only expectations I have for John Daly are as follows:

- to find a way to spit on sponsors and charities (figuratively and probably literally in some cases)

- to look and act like a slob

- to just make enough good shots for people to forget all the horrible ones that follow

- to be maddening and nauseating, yet ultimately interesting

- to never live up to that 5 year run (1991-1996 ish)

- to be one of only a small handful of reasons anyone outside of Italy has ever heard of Constantino Rocca

I gave it some more thought and you're right.

I have no expectations of the man, and no interest in discussing his childish antics further.
