Im sure this has been done many times on this board, but what are some reasons for chunking the ball?  Looking for more of a list of ideas to cover some different causes.

It gets really annoying.

Like here is an example of one that i have:

Lowering the body at impact.  Well almost everybody lowers at impact, but at what point does it become harmful.  And what are some causes to needing to lower that much at impact?

Most of the chunking (fat shots) I have ever done was because of looking to see where the ball was going before it left.

Most chipping and  pitching "chunks" are caused by leaving (or moving the weight) to the back foot during the downswing. Weight should start on left side and stay there while you hinge your wrists and then maintain the flying wedge through impact. Mickelson calls it "hinge and hold"

This is a good one.

ok and i think i just felt what might be causing this bout of chunks that i have right now while i have just started practicing full swings outside.

With my weight starting more forward, as i have been moving to a more Foley/S and Tish move, my head has been staying in the same place throughout the swing, but has been hanging back compared to the rest of my body.  This also means that my chin turns forward as i sort of make a little reverse Cish move into impact.  So i guess you could say my back side is collapsing.

Is this a normal problem...especially in the process of moving from a weight shift swing to a centered swing?

Hinge and hold applies to full shots as well. Flipping, casting and losing the flying wedges are a major contributor to hitting it fat.

When it comes to chipping, it depends what shot you are trying to hit. You can hit the ground first and pitch the ball, which will send it higher. Requirements being the ball hitting the ground first, but without having the hands so far forward you start digging. On chipping it's pretty much a matter of hitting the ball first and not blading it.

On full shots there can be different fixes for different swings. Holding the flying wedge and getting the weight forward are two common fixes.

When I take a decent backswing and don't flex my right wrist much, then extend my right wrist on the swing, I chunk it about 99% of the time. Old habits die hard... For me, poor weight distribution and flipping are usually the cause.

    • Day 444 - 2025-12-18 Light day of hotel room work. GEARS Summit v2.0 today. Good day.
    • Day 38 (18 Dec 25) - got out in the backyard with grandson this afternoon.  We got into a little game of pitching the ball from about 25yds to a target point just off the asphalt lane behind the backyard.  Goal - just clear it with a quick hop and stop.  Focused on using the wedge swing motion I was talking with the course pro yesterday….smooth and thru just bruising the grass.  In addition to a concentrated focus on technique, it also called for a quiet mind locked in on target point.  Rehearsed this with both the 50° and 55° wedges.
    • I listened to the Shaun Webb one about the swing coach app. Sounds like a great thing and will (hopefully) be very useful for me. I do think the hosts are underestimating where AI could be in a few years. Right now it's just regurgitating stuff that it has been told or it has scrubbed from somewhere else and a human guiding things will be quite a lot more helpful than just the AI, but it's going to keep developing and it will reach the stage where it's figuring this stuff out on its own. Time will come when it will have you do a TPI style screen and take various height/arm length/leg length etc. measurements, have you tell it some history and your time constraints and goals and what not and it will watch a video of your swing face on and DTL and it will know exactly what you need to work on.
    • I found it entertaining, but the announcing was lousy.  How did the measuring on the final shot start with Rory being closer and being told he won, and then with no explanation it turns out Scottie won?  Weird.
    • Day 128 12-18 Worked on rotation and getting to lead side. Still working on the flow feeling while doing that. Recorded swings.
