I have been doing some video training and my fall back bad habit is over swinging.  I over rotate by body my head starts moving and things get out of sorts.  It is something I have battled forever.  I really want to get over this.  When I swing within myself I am making very good contract and my window of misses is pretty narrow.

Does anyone have any advise on how to undo this habit.  I usually start out OK and the swing grows the more I swing.

Think to yourself before every shot "half swing" or "3/4 swing"...

If you really are over-swinging a lot then thinking "half swing" should pull you back to a relatively normal swing...

i have the same problem. Here is my normal swing, calculated by video with a golf pro. My normal overswing,

hip turn, near 60 degrees

Shoulder turn, near 110 degrees

clubhead, near or below the left ear at the end of my backswing.

This is my overswing, or i would say, over turn. This causes me to get way over on my right side as well. Here is the cure the pro came up with.. Dont think it as three quarter swing. Just think about rotating your shoulders and not rotating your hips. When i did this i found that my shoulders would stop at 90 degrees, my hips were near 45 degrees, and my club is at parallel. It was amazing, and its a bit tough to do at first. Another thing it helped, it kept me centered..

There is a training aid that will help you. It prevents overfolding of the right arm.

I have been telling myself to buy one but just haven't pulled the trigger because training aids so rarely work for me. I should get one though.

I truely believe all swinging aids are a waste of money. My personal opinion

What's the point in the Swing Extender? If your left arm stays straight on the backswing, your right arm can't over-bend anyway...

If you find it necessary though, why not just grab a thick cardboard tube (or roll up a piece of corrugated cardboard) and slide that over your left elbow? That way your left arm doesn't break on the backswing and consequently your right arm can't over-fold? $30 seems excessive for a triangle of plastic with some velcro...

That's a pretty general statement.  It depends on where you are in your game.  A golf swing is not an intuitive thing.  I can't tell you a swing aid that is a must have and I am skeptical but I would not make that broad a statement.

OK I'll rephrase... If your left arm is straight there's only so far it can go into your chest before your pec gets in the way and it can't go back any further. That being the case, the right arm can also only fold a certain amount before the left arm is forced to break at the elbow to allow the right arm the ability to fold more.

Over-rotating your shoulders or hips has nothing to do with how far your arms can/can't fold and is a separate issue altogether. :)

True, if your left arm is straight, there is limit to how far you can rotate and turn. You be surprised though what the body can do. ;b. But don't feel like you have to lock your left arm, a good tip i remember, your arms stop moving when your shoulders stop rotating. So when you stop rotating, don't keep your arms moving back, or folding.

Yea its a general statement on my part, but i rather not spend the money there. I honestly could probably build half the things sold out there. Maybe i should go make a quick buck.

Yeah absolutely. When I first started out my left arm would break drastically because my mind was thinking "I need to rotate back as far as possible" when in actuality I was WAY over-rotating - Feel versus real. Your tip on stopping the arms when the shoulders stop would have been ideal at that point. :)

Now though my arms and shoulders both rotate incrementally at the same time rather than in sequence so they reach the top of the backswing at the same time.

I know a lot of people's takeaway starts out with just hands or just arms but for me it's arms and shoulders from the outset (my right arm slowly folds from the second I start the takeaway right to the top of the backswing) so for those guys it's a great tip. :)

They're not. Some are, some aren't.

While true to a large extent, that misses the point that a lot of people feel that they do keep their left arm straight but do not.

And a tube on the left arm won't really work because it will do nothing to teach you extensor action - most do better feeling it in the right arm (actually pushing out) not in the left.

It works. We use it at Golf Evolution, and I've personally used it... http://thesandtrap.com/forum/thread/28081/swing-extender

I have 14 swing aids....they help me to hit the ball.

Really though, most drills and training aids i see can work like a check list...to see if what you are doing in your swing "breaks the club"  or if your right arm stops at 90 degrees, and even take the feet together drill...yes it helps sync some things up while you are doing it, but it doesnt help me understand why this is or how to do it in my normal swing.

The thing that these drill or training devices dont always to is identify or help the root of the problem.  Some probably do.  The other thing is that you need to understand what the drill swing aid is accomplishing, whether it is a feel or a position, or whatever.

I am lumping training aids and drill into the same category because i think they are pretty much the same thing...one just costs money, and is usually cleverly marketed, and everybody is using it... so in my mind to spend that money on learning the root cause for your problems is way more worth it.

You see thats cheating, we rationalize things by clasifying them. Thats the same logic as thinking putting should be included into short game, only when you putt from off the green ;b

I will lay off the training aids. I am againts spending more money than i have to in golf. Its expensive already ;b

I really don't think about it, my arms pretty much do the one piece takeway pretty easy. I have a habit of turning my hands and opening the clubface in the backswing, were my clubhead will be behind my hands going back. Strangly, the clubface gets square at the top, don't ask how, but i got that flat wrist at the top nailed down, so its wierd. But then the clubface slightly opens up in the downswing a bit, but not much. I actually hit a pretty straight ball. But i get in trouble more than i like.

For the most part I agree, they get me thinking to much and expecting the training aid to swing the club for me.  However, I currently have 2 training aids in my bag that have helped me TONS over the past two years and cost me a total of $15.  I have a set of tour sticks and one of those Izzo Swing Aids that helps reduce the flying elbow(same as the Haney Perfect Form).  I don't use the Izzo thing as often as the tour sticks, but I pull it out when my swing starts feeling out of whack and it usually does the trick after a range session or 2.  Couldn't live without them....

There are some other aids I'd like to try, but there's no way I'm shelling out $100+ for an Inside Down The Line Putting Aid.....

Ah see I used a tube to feel when the left arm broke rather than to prevent it breaking. :)

I found that many training aids don't work. Greg Norman's Secret. Never got it to work for me. Path Pro, I could still hit it bad with that thing. That is only a couple, but you get the idea. I tend to be a sucker for those things.

I decided to take the plunge with the Swing Extender. I will give it a try.
