Not sure what you mean. I'm an Edel putter fitter now, and when I get my Edel putter (I've yet to be fit for mine), I'm going to pay for it.

It's kind of OT, though. My point was simply that with Edel and AimPoint I feel like my 50% range will extend to 10 feet or so now.

Angel Cabrera and Mike Weir aimed over six inches outside the hole from six feet. That might play a role in why some pros miss putts, no?

I think the OP was probably suggesting it was a "What putter do you use?" type of comment. Considering all the trouble I went through the past couple years relearning how to aim, I can see why you're excited. I would be too - making putts is very rewarding.

If I would have been interested in which putter would bring 50% from 10 ft. plus, I would have posted the poll in "clubs, grips, shafts, fitting" ...... I fully understand Iacas's enthusiasm, but it also smells commercially involvement, nothing against that, but have some mixed feelings.........

FIRST of all get off the pipe, you're a hack compared to Mike Weir and Cabrera. You were a 3 handicap a couple years ago and you think you're going to be making 50 % of your putts inside 10 feet...WHAT A JOKE.  Instead of starting a forum, you should have gone to Q school...

I can aim my putter better than them, but besides that, I never said I was better than them at anything. Probably a better software developer, though, if asked...

Yep, I was a 3 index four years ago. I got some good information, some good help, and now I'm below scratch and a pro, making a good living helping people play better golf, both in person and here. You, you're still some guy who makes rude comments (which were removed from your post). Look around - a few forum members were helped just last week in San Antonio and Las Vegas.

And if you must know, I already make way, way above 50% of my putts "inside 10 feet." Since I've been keeping track of stats, I'm 1204 of 1614. That's almost exactly 75%.

Heck, here's a stat for you: I make more than 50% of all of my putts. Think about it...

Making 50% of all putts inside 10 feet is no big deal.  In fact, if you only made 50% of all putts inside 10', you would be a really poor putter. #100 on the PGA Tour last year (Jeff Overton) made 87%. #1 (Paul Casey) made 90.67%. You have to remember that it includes all putts under 10', including tap-ins.

Making 50% of 10' putts is entirely different, however.  That would place you 22nd on tour last year, tying you with Aaron Baddeley, among others.  In other words, you would be one of the best putters in the world.

Fun with math!  If you average fewer than 2 putts per hole, this statement is true for you, too! :-)  (Maybe it's kind of an obvious identity, but I hadn't thought about it in those terms.)  I average 36.93 putts per 18 holes, so I make 18 / 36.93 on average, or just shy of 49%.  I should just flip a coin!

While matching stats with the top couple dozen pros in anything is astounding, my gut feeling is that this is an area where a non-pro (or, in Erik's case, a non-tour pro) could plausibly be competitive.  It's very different from the endless 15-handicappers with 300 yard average drives.  Putting doesn't require the ungodly hand-eye coordination, whole-body muscle control, timing, etc, that it takes to hit every full shot as near-perfect as those guys do it.  Not to say it's easy, but a lot of the athletic requirements are relaxed so I think someone who's simply got a very good eye for putting and puts in a lot of time could excel in this area without being tour caliber otherwise.  Factor in that the pros are seeing a wider variety of greens than someone who doesn't travel to a new course every week, their pin placements are consistently chosen to be downright evil, and the greens are tuned to be faster than what most of us see, and the 10 foot putts for the pros are generally harder than the 10 footers for the rest of us.  In that sense, it's not apples to apples, so the stats could be equal even if the skills aren't.

Anyway, the point is, at 10-foot putts, I think it's unlikey but not absurd that a scratch or slightly better handicapper who spends a lot of time working on putting could be competitive with the big guys in terms of percentages.  Many of the best putters in the world are on tour, but I'd wager a fair sum that there is a fair number of better putters who aren't.  Just like the long drive champs are pretty much a separate group from PGA Tour members, the very best in one area are specialists who can't necessarily compete overall.

And even if you disagree, being a jerk about it is just unnecessary.

I definitely believe I can make at least 50% of my putts within 10 feet.  The trick is getting your approach shot within 10 feet.  Thats the real difference. There could be a 20 handicapper putting at greater than 50% within 10 feet, but if he can't hit the green in regulation, then it doesn't really matter.  Playing pros are pros because they put their approach shots within 15 feet a good chunk of the time, and with good putting stats at those distances, they become great golfers.

Believe is nice, it is also possitive thinking (I like that), but what if you really keep stats of within 10 ft.

Watching PGA Tour golf on television we see many shots ending at least 20-30 ft from the hole, it is hard to expect even a 1.5 hc. to get inside 10 ft with the approach (unless you also include scrambling for par)

Nope,  since you always make one putt on each hole, if you 2-putt, that means you also missed one. So you made one out of two, or 50%.  If you average N putts per hole, then you make 1/N of your putts, multiply by 100 to get the percentage.  Here are a few numbers to give an idea of how it works.

Percentage of putts made for given average number of putts per hole.

Average putts per hole	Success rate
1.5	67%
1.75	57%
2.0	50%
2.25	44%
2.5	40%

Edit:

Actually, I just realized this isn't exactly true since you may escape a hole with zero putts.  For this to be exact you need to throw those holes out when you compute your average putts per hole. But really, if you no-putt often enough to affect the statistics, you don't belong here.  :-)
