Your swing can look however you want it to (think Jim Furyk) so long as you have this/these fundamental(s):

I'm trying to gather a consensus on what some of the most important aspects are to players.

To save you time, I don't just want the five fundamentals Ben Hogan gave us. Reading a recent Golf Digest, one Golf Instructor mentioned that Hogan's book gave him so much business.. trying to undo some of the things that were taught.

Thanks in advance for your input!

1.) I'm not swinging in a way that makes me prone to injury - I'll be able to play just as well when I get old(er)

2.) The ball goes where I want it to go

Not really a fundamental of golf.. that would be more so a product of good golf. Now for those of us not blessed with a great golf game that includes your two guidelines for hitting a good shot... perhaps you'd care to expand on the fundamental aspects of your swing.

Thanks again.

Well, the first fundamental is controlling the low point of the swing and hitting the ground after the ball. Every good player does this.   The aforementioned Jim Furyk is particularly good at controlling the low point of the swing and the path that gets the club there.

Corretion: It's the only fundamental of golf.

1.) Align my body and aim my club face so that the ball has a good chance to go where I want it to

2.) Make a proper shoulder turn

3.) Drive the club down through the ball and turf along the target line ( my path) at impact for irons

4.) Sweep the ball off the turf along the target line for woods

5.) Make a mental how the shot felt (left or right) in case I lose sight of it which I often do

6.) Repeat

  1. Lag: the hands lead the clubhead
  2. The club hits ball, then the ground
  3. The clubhead approaches the ball in a consistent manner

I am sensing a theme here ...dynamics through impact, which all great players must have.  I you look through the recent past (ie 1990s Senior Tour) you could appreciate the variety of swings (Nicklaus, Trevino, Palmer, Floyd, Rodriquez, etc) that all looked different but were all very similar through impact.  If you don't hit ball first then the ground you aren't going to be very successful.

I'll just post the S&T fundamentals, which seems to make sense.

  1. Hitting the ground in the same place every time
  2. Having enough power to play the course
  3. Matching the clubface to the swing path to control shot direction
