Our Myrtle trip...

7 posts in this topic

Besides my regular game at my home course, once a year I get together with a group of 40 guys every April in Myrtle Beach.  This will be my 11th year but the core group and founding members will be on their 28th consecutive year.  This group started as a trio of brothers and their friends from Eastern PA but as the core group has moved around the country, the number of attendees (new friends, business associates, etc) has grown over the years to it's current number of 7 foursomes (about the biggest manageable number you can get off a course in a day).

The 2 brothers who spearhead this group have really done a cool job combining fun and a well organized week of activities/games with a sense of history and tradition.  At the end of each week, a "Green Jacket" is awarded to the golfer who performs the best relative to his abilities.  Lots of other "awards" are given including rookie of the year, ironman (biggest partier), and best dressed (tongue in cheek).

This year they have put together a web site that documents the weeks activities along with the various betting games that we play while we are down there.  It takes an accountant to decipher the scorecard at the end of a round in keeping track of all the bets but it really is a great way to spend a week.  The web site is here for anyone who is interested in seeing how one group runs their spring trip to Myrtle!

Sounds like a blast! We have a group of about 30 that goes to swan lake resort in Indiana every summer. If you're ever looking to switch it up and step up the quality of golf a notch, consider going a little further south to Hilton Head next time. You won't want to go back to Myrtle!

Wow. Great organizational skills you guys have. It's great to see such a large group of people come together to visit us in Myrtle Beach for their golf trip.  How do you work out the golf accommodations?

That's the beauty of the trip for me - I just have to show up!  ;)  One of the guys who organizes the trip makes all of the golf plans and I honestly have no idea how he does it!  My favorite track from this year was Willbrook plantation while the Big Cats courses we played were the bigger disappointments.

You have no idea how lucky you are:). I put together a trip for only 16 golfers each year and it's a pain int he A** trying to coordinate everything. We've been to Mb and it's a great time, glad you guys had a blast.

    • I always use Swing x Swing for the statistical feedback so it keeps track for me.  When playing with buddies and there's a friendly wager at stake, I will also keep traditional scorecard for all parties so that it's all transparent and easily reviewable by all.
    • well since 2013, i've been messing around with the Maxfli U series balls..  started with the U2,  cuz i had a nasty slice lol..   tried the U3's and U4's both had bad results cuz i still had a awful slice...  then in 2015, i tried the Maxfli Softfli figuring if i worked on slowing my swing down and just making better contact, i'd get straighter drives / keep the ball in play  and lower my scores...   while at first it didnt happen....  this summer has been a world of difference.... So this summer i started out just working on keeping my swing short and making good contact... which has worked wonders!!   i was still using the SoftFli, and hitting my drives a lot straighter and longer..  my iron shots also ended up being better too...     but then my issue became stopping the ball on the green.. cuz i was hitting a lot of greens but having the ball roll off or i'd go past the pin, but no backspin..     So today, i decided to try some of the U6lc balls i bought last summer...  and i dont know if they are any longer or shorter off the driver or even the irons..didnt notice anything...   i did lose 2..  1 cuz i grabbed the wrong wedge lol  56-12 on a tight lie and shanked one off into the tree's...  and 2nd ball i tried to cut across a small dogleg right... and sliced the ball into a corn field lol...    but this ball was awesome on iron and wedge shots..  had several wedge shots, where i spun the ball back..  had a 7iron on a par 3, that i spun the ball back too...    so for green side shots, this ball surprised me alot..  i have tried playing PRoV's and the U4's in the past but my short game wasnt great so i didnt get the good short game control..     But for someone looking for a good " Tour Type " of ball at a reasonable price, look into the U6's    i plan on using the U6's for a long time!!      hopefully they dont discontiue these anytime soon
    • I understand it is subjective but how do you measure 3/4, 1/2, 1/4 on an Erik pitch and a full swing?
    • How is it playing from a wrong place when the ball was still moving when it was struck?  It should be 14-2 and 18-5, and you refer to 1-4/12 for the explanation as to why breaching two two stroke rules doesn't result in a total of 4 penalty strokes.
