A friend and I were visiting (not playing) TPC Sawgrass and we wandered in to the clubhouse and asked if we could take a cart out to see the course. The pro introduced us to a Storyteller (that's a Sawgrass marshall). He took us on a tour of the course and really knew his "story". A great time and much appreciated.

2 anti-marshall storys here.

At the Irish Open last year while following the final group on the last day, a marshall stopped me from crossing a fairway on a hole that every group had already played through. This was despite about 2 dozen other people crossing at the same time as me. He had no problem with them crossing. Some people are snobby enough to believe that young people don't have a clue.

At the same event on the Thursday, Matteo Manassero was about to putt on a hole when somebody began talking and laughing loudly on a mobile phone. Matteo backs off his putt and everyone turns to look and see who it is....turns out it was one of the MARSHALLS for the hole

Does anyone remember that marshall holding up the "Quiet" sign that was casting a shadow on Peter Jacobsen while he was lining up to putt? He waited for the guy to clue in, then went over and move his arms down. I bet that guy wanted to crawl into a hole.

A guy I know was telling me a story about his buddy, Marshall, one day. I asked didn't Marshall work for the state, to which he replied, "Hell no. He needs to be under the care of the state though!" Well I thought it was funny!

I was playing a nice course one day with a friend. We are both careful to follow rules of the course and try to be good stewards of the game.

Tim had hit his tee shot to the left of the cart path so we were both looking in that direction as we traveled down the path. After he hit his ball back into the fairway we drive the cart out to my ball. After I hit, a marshall approaches us and asks very nicely for us to get the cart back onto the cart path. We had driven right by some signs that marked "no carts" on this part of the fairway and didn't see them for looking Tim's ball!  We were really embarrased! Thank goodness the marshall was understanding. Classy guy.

this one is dumb.....guy I am playing with hits a range ball into a lake, on purpose. marshall who was behind us approaches him and asks if he hit a rage ball into the lake. the guy says yeah. now, he must pay for that range ball that he hit into the lake. I laughed and the marshall turns to me and says it isn't funny. so, I laugh even more.seriously, I thought he was joking. then I realized, this old marshall guy is serious. the guy had to go with the marshall back to the pro shop while me and the others continued to play. 10 minutes later, the guy joins us again and tells us that the marshall took him to the pro shop to pay for the range ball he hit into the lake. so did he pay? NO. haha. he said the pro shop guy thought it was a joke. he also said the marshall started to argue with the worker about him paying for the range ball he hit into the lake. it was all a funny stupid situation I was happy to be apart of.

I have sooooooo many of these stories from having worked at a golf course. some funny, some bad. but this one has to be one of the top ones I have been apart of.

I was playing a course that is apart of the same golf management company I work for, and I'm on the 11th hole par-5, and the rules for the day were to hit from the white tees to speed up play.  I'm saying there's no way I'm hitting from the white tees (only 5900 yards), so I go back to blues, when I normally play blacks at 7100 yards for that course.  So marshall sees us on the tee at the blues, and he drives down middle of fairway waving his arms saying we need to move up.  I'm like don't worry I know how to keep pace, I'm a starter at a different course and a good golfer. He said he doesn't give a s**t.  So, while he argued with me wasting 5 minutes of time that I could've been playing and speeding up the pace of play, he goes off. I move up out of respect, smack the ball 320, hit my second on the green, eagle the hole. Go 2 under for the rest of the round.  After the round, I give my card to the marshall, and said f*** you.  A week later, I see the same marshall at a company meeting thing.  He looks embarrassed, trying to avoid eye contact.  I understand rules for the day, but he was watching me on the first hole hitting from the whites and I hit my 3-wood down the center about 260, so he knew I could play golf.  However, now whenever I see him as I play the course, we usually joke around with it.  So, it works out in the end.

I thought the thread was about marshalls being arseholes, not players. You say the club wanted people to play from certain tees. You ignore that and then say "*uck you" to the marshall.

Then you pretend that the guy was embarrassed a week later.  Yeah, sure.

The fact that you see yourself a s a fantastic player doesn't mean you have the right to do as you please.

All you want to do is tell people about your eagle and your 3 wood distance.

The marshall should have kicked you off the course.
The "joking around with it" must be a hoot.

"Remember the time I acted like a prick and told you to *uck yourself when you were doing your job but you saw me stripe a 3 wood down the middle?" Hilarious. Must make the marshall feel all warm and fuzzy inside.

Even if he kicked me off, I can go right back on the course for free (this is arrogant, but thats ok to me).  And maybe you should read the thread subject as well. It says favorite marshall story.  It was my favorite story, regardless if you think I'm an ass, and maybe I was.  Everybody at some point, when they play, don't follow the rules or golf etiquette.  That's nature.  As well, what I shot, how I play, and what was said is apart of my story.  If you think everything was made up, that's fine, I can't force you to believe something.

sounds like the marshall was correct. everyone should of been playing from the whites. oh well.

I assume you get to play for free? since you work for a golf course. if that is the case. you should hold yourself to and even higher standard on a golf course because you get the privilege to play for free. whenever I had workers from other courses come play, we especially held them to a higher standard because they were employees of the same company but from other courses.

I absolutely believe you - noone would make up a story like that to make themself look bad. The amzing thing is that you boast of being an arrogant jerk.

I'd be interested to see your reaction when someone at the course you're working at behaves like a pig in your presence and tells you to shove it.

I get that all the time actually, either people telling me the course is in horrible condition and they want their money back or they want their own driving cart in a 4-some try to threaten me if I don't listen.  It makes my day more interesting and brighter, especially when the day starts to slow down a little bit.  The marshall was doing his job and thats good, except he should be watching other people as they were doing the same thing.  But, I got caught and made my case.  However golf4fun12, I know that they do hold me in higher regard, and I do fix the course up as well as I can do. I may be an ass to make my round more enjoyable, but I never ever beat the course up.  Whenever and where ever I play, I will clean the course up, including picking up garbage and repairing ball marks and divots, as I do work for that company.

You're lucky you didn't get fired.

But those other guys were doing it.

Really?  That argument work for you when you get caught speeding?  It never worked for my kids and it never works for my JHS students.

But then again, what the hell do I know?

i dont really have a marshal story. Ive noticed some can be pretty friendly and some can be old guys who can't hear anymore and are grumpy. They probably should be retired if they are grumpy on the job. I dont get why alot of these courses hire old men that are in their 70's as the majority of their crew

Well I've never been caught speeding, so I haven't tried it yet.  I'm looking forward to it though.  As well, your basis for saying I should be fired for that, is not too good.

"Oh hey marshall, fu".... "Sir, you are fired for saying that"  Yes very good...

Several years ago, about this time of year, I left work a little early to play a round, it was cool, overcast and kind of a light mist/rain.  When I got to the course, there were only a couple of people on the course and they were on the front 9 so, being a single they let me go off on the back.  The course is pretty hilly and there are two huge hills that a marshall waits on to take you up if you are walking, as I was.  When I got the first hill the marshall took me up the hill and then went about his business.  About 3 or 4 holes later he finds me and next thing I know I have a forecaddie/chaufer.  He would drive me thru the tough walking spots and on the blind shots, which there are several, he would move ahead and have my ball spotted before I got there.

No surprise I played in just a little under 3 hours and shot one of my all time best scores!
