Rory McIlroy has just had a pop at Butch on twitter.

If I'm too young to know if I like a course or not Butch is too old to coach...... #patronising #stuckinhisoldways

Think Rory has embarrassed himself with that comment

I don't see the problem here. Did Rory respond to something someone said?

Who cares? He's quickly ruining his reputation. Other than Quail Hollow what's he even done over here?

Butch said something on TV about Rory not being at the TPC.

Looks like Rory took exception and is now acting like a petulant spoiled know it all brat.

It was a mistake for he and Westwood to skip this event, but at the end of the day it's their loss not ours. If a player chooses to skip an event, that's his business. But for Rory to now take a shot at Butch is showing his immaturity.  He needs to quiet down, work on his game, and focus on winning.

Is there more background context to this?  What does Butch have to do with Rory McIlroy?  What is their history?

What are you people talking about?  Let me translate "if you think i am too young to know if a course is good or not good, then that means Butch is too old to coach".  Which means....butch is obviously NOT too old to coach, it was a compliment for crying our loud....

I doubt it was a compliment, but then again I think Twitter is lame.

You know who should stop talking to the media and focus on his game because he hasn't done much on the US Tour lately? Tiger Woods!

That COULD be true if we had some context for the quote.  Why did he specifically name Butch?  Why not some other coach?  I don't follow McIlroy closely enough to get the reference.

Butch apparently made a comment on Rory being too young to not like TPC and skipping The Players. Some people seem to think the players are obliged to play this event, including those that don't play the PGA Tour regularly.

Rory responded by saying that if he is too young to decide if he likes a course or not, Butch is too old to teach. What it means is that Rory thinks he's old enough (why shouldn't he be?) to decide and that Butch is not too old to teach. If Butch thinks Rory is too young to play, Rory reponds by saying he's too old to teach golf.

Why not the following?:

Butch has had a go at Rory.

I think Butch has embarrassed himself with that comment.

Harmon isn't usually that arrogant.

Just one question. How did Rory fare at The Masters this year?

Posted

Rory decided to skip the tournament, as a Euro Tour pro that's a choice he's entitled to make.  Harmon had no business commenting on Rory's decision, and opened himself to comment by Rory.  Given that, Rory took the high road, and basically said he's old enough to make decisions for himself.  If anyone is in the wrong it's Harmon, not Rory.  Wonder if Butch will make a comment about Tiger quitting after 9 holes....doubt it.

I agree; Butch is too stick in his old ways. And leave it to Butch to make Johnny Miller look humble.

Butch Harmon has every right to comment on the decision Rory made as it's a big tournament. Second only to the majors in terms of OWGR points awarded. Rory needs to button it and focus on his game. Other than Quail Hollow Rory hasn't done much over here and here is where the best in the world play week in and week out. But if his choice is to play in mostly 2nd tier events across the pond, that's his business and his world ranking should and will suffer for it.

When did Butch become Rory's coach, agent or consultant that he's entitled to comment on Rory's decision but doesn't expect Rory to fire back?  As a Tiger fanboy I'd expect you to be the last to critique someone for skipping a tournament given the number of PGA and Euro tournaments Tiger chooses not to play in every year.

    • Day 468 - 2026-01-11 Loooooong day. Did some work in the patio door (as a mirror) when I got home.
    • I caught a video on this driver; the face tech seems crazy. Looking at the heat map for ball speed, hitting it basically anywhere on the face only loses a few percent ball speed. The surprising and counter intuitive part to me was that for flat faced clubs, ball speed loss is directly proportional to distance loss. For clubs with bulge and roll this is apparently not true. The surprising part of that story being that the max distance potential looks to be a tiny pee sized area for this driver, and I feel in general for drivers. The counter intuitive part being (the myth?) that blade irons have a pee sized sweet spot and missing that tiny spot causes dramatic losses. And that modern drivers, maybe 2017 on, have massive sweet spots and are ultra forgiving. Where in reality, if this heat map data is valid and reliable, it might be a bit of the opposite. This insane tech driver appears to have a pea sized "sweet spot" while Mizuno Pro 241 irons are 28% more forgiving compared to the average of all clubs measured. Not compared to other players irons, compared to all clubs from all categories, players to SGI! The Pro 241 being essentially just a solid chunk of metal with no "tech" at all. Which for me devolves into a whole mess of what is forgiveness really? And in measurable and quantifiable results how many yards, or feet, does that translate into?
