What's interesting about this is that people I know who are very anti-religion, deeply believe in karma.  So while one person may say, "that is God punishing you," the other would say, "that's bad karma coming back to bite you."

Either way, how do you rationalize the application of it?  One person does something and has horrible things happen to him/her the next few months, another person has done the same thing, but only has minor negative things happen to him/her the next few months.

Karma is too close to religion to have a logical discussion about it, as MBD said, you either believe or don't believe in such things as god and karma. If you believe it's likely you are passionate about it.

The way I get this karma thing works is that bad things happen to people that do bad things. So for those that believe in Karma do we assume that everyone that died, was injured, or lost their home during the Japanese earthquake and tsunami were people that did bad things and brought this on themselves? How about our soldiers that are killed protecting our country? Just trying to figure out how this thing works....since some of you blame Tigers recent injuries on his infidelity.

This could go a step further. How about we leave law and justice in Karma/God/Butterfly's hands and abolish laws on the grounds that 'it'll come back around' for criminals? ;)

I am familiar with all those, but I don't know how that is related to Karma. What happened in those instances?

Yukari, That was just my attempt at humor. When you watch those corny oil commercials or have to live with that logo as your trademark it has to be some form of divine retribution! All in good fun. As far as Tiger is concerned his deal with the devil fell through sometime around Thanksgiving 2009. No Karma involved just his agent trying to change the terms on his soul and someone getting a little pissed. Now for the agent's part karma came and bit him in the ass.

Now there is an interesting hypothesis.  Did Tiger (or Earl many years earlier) sell his soul to the Devil in return for his otherworldly golfing talent?

Devil to Tiger: "I'll give you X number or years where you will be the greatest golfer in the world.  You'll have untold wealth and fame, people from around will know your name and will revere you, you will be the most famous and richest person in the history of sport. However, there's just this one, teensy-weensy little catch............."

Sometimes I look for the devil out on the practice range so that I can make my deal.  He is never around, though.

Are you listening?  I just want to shoot in the 70s.  For that I will gladly endure a penis-tweetpic that my girlfriend finds out about.

Thanks.

So instead of a fiddle I just have to take my driver to the Crossroads and meet this "devil" that offers drives the distance of Bubba combined with a short game better than Donald and all I have to do is sleep with 100+ hot looking women and give up half of the winnings I earned?  Where is this Crossroads you speak of?

In essence, it is based on the chaos theory in which a small change in one area effects another event down stream.  So imagine a butterfly fluttering its wing.  It will create a small disturbance in the air, which gets propagated and eventually leads to weather change down stream.

I would have added "ugly" to that.  Some of those women he slept with...Sheesh!  with all the fame and money, he could've done a heck of a lot better.  Not that I agree with what he did.

Yes I believe in Karma. If you do good thing good things will happen to you. If you do bad things then your life will be surrounded by evil.

I'm a firm believer in Karma, and have been studying Buddhism for a while now. Actually the two came together for me in one instance, when I dislocated and fractured my ankle back in 2008. I was a pretty bad kid growing up and did a lot of things a know I shouldn't have. And it finally reached a breaking point, literally. I had purchased a book about Buddhism prior to the accident but never got around to opening it, until I was laid up for a few weeks recooping. While reading this book I came to find out about how Karma works and it dawned on me that yes, this is probably my bad karmic build-up releasing itself. Anyhow, I try and be a good person to myself and others now. I slip up every once in a while though.

I believe in karma.. to a certain extent.

In debate there is a fallacy called the post hoc, ergo propter hoc (after this, therefore because of this). Essentially it just means.. if something happened now, you could find something that happened prior to it to blame it on. It's a fallacy because there is no solid basis for the contention. So... using the above post as an example: I was a bad kid; I got seriously injured; therefore I got seriously injured because I was a bad kid growing up.

Being rational, and slightly cynical, I can logically deduce that for one.. the world doesn't always balance out.. there is not always an answer to every question. If I play with fire as a child (literally or metaphorically), I will not necessarily fall victim to that fire later on.

In theory, I love karma because it gives reassurance that the bad people (and the good people) of the world will get what they deserve - for better or worse. It gives a hope for a universal balance of things.
Just like in golf.. the mental aspect of things in life is always in play and very real, even while being a figment of someone's imagination. You see people that choose clubs based on colors or brand name, without any regard to function. And it actually works for them because they believe it works. The same could go for the concept of karma.. it works for those that believe it works.
It is all about perspective.. and that is all that matters.

How is breaking your ankle for being a bad kid growing up any sort of lesson? They aren't related????

Did you break someones bone or something? It's not really teaching any lessons for doing bad things if they way you are punished has little to do with the things you did that brought you to that point

Or is Karma just something bad happening to you in payback for something bad you did? ie. you bully a kid at school, then when your older you start to go blind? Or is it you bully a kid in school, then when your older, the lady at your retirement home bullies you?

Let's say for instance, Tiger is getting his Karma at the moment.....how do you know when you've had enough karma? When will good things happen again for him? It's sorta vague in the fact good things happen to people everyday, as well as bad things. So it's almost null.

    • Day 316 - More swings, full backswing and full finish.
    • Day 132: did some mirror work while watching TV. Worked on backswing stuff primarily.
    • 26 Nov 24 -  It was not a record breaking round by any means, but rather a simple walking of the back nine today playing TBWB (two ball-worse ball) where the challenge is to play the worse of the two shots played - could be an errant drive from the woods, a tree knocked ball that is 100 yds farther back down the fairway, a nGIR ball as opposed to a GIR….the goal today was to stay no worse than bogie thru nine.  Managed to achieve that goal - bogied 7 holes with one dbl and one par to counter the dbl.  It’s about staying focused and not letting a bad shot or lie derail, but rather be an opportunity.
    • Day 208 (26 Nov 24)- Opted to walk 9 today (was the back nine as they had a huge group going off the front) but instead of it being persimmons and blades, I had the regular gamers but made it a TBWB (two ball-worst ball) round.  This really challenges on several fronts - ball striking to be as consistent as possible, course management from non-optimal lies and keeping your head in it as it can be depressing to nail a shot on line-on target and the second rattles the trees right and it’s over 50 yards back and that’s the one you have to play.  The goal was to be no worse than bogie overall (+9).  Finished the round exactly on the number with some solid recoveries, no penalty strokes and only one 3-putt.
