This kind of situation occurs regularly: If you don't remember which avatars are defaults, you don't necessarily realize that there are two different people commenting after each other. Half the point of avatars to make users easily recognizable, and these defaults are actually counter-productive in that area. Ideally, I think there would either be so many avatars that re-use is rare, just one so that the default is obvious to everyone, or they would all be marked in such a way that it's obvious they're defaults. Anyone else bugged by this or am I being too picky?

I agree, no fan of default avatars. People are usually able to find ones themselves. An avatar is meant to represent the user and is very useful for recognising users when reading the forum. When people use the same avatar, it just becomes messy. Erik has stated that he encourage everyone to find their own avatars, but as long as the default ones exist, this will happen. If we don't want the default ones to be used, I don't see the point with having them in the first place.

The current plan is to update the avatars to replace all of the default ones (for new users at least) with a single one - the "Sand Trap Man" - to really encourage people to choose new default avatars.

This hasn't happened yet.

There's only so much I can do about this. I've tried putting up notifications, but that doesn't change things much. The old site had default avatars, but people seemed to change them far, far, far more frequently (or, more often, simply opted not to have an avatar at first).

It's annoying, I agree. I get really tired of seeing the same 12 avatars.

I'm doing what I can on this, but progress is slow.

This has been a minor annoyance for me as well. More of a temporary confusion than annoyance but you see what I'm getting at. Anyway, thanks for working on this one. Default avatars a tough one. I saw a thread earlier in the week where a member was talking about how useless his 4-iron was. At the same time, his avatar was the one above with the shallow focus on a 4-iron. Hmm??? LOL

Wooo Hoo! I'm a celebrity!

Haha. I'll be honest.. I even got confused when looking at that post about which ones were mine or not. I think that the big push to change one's avatar (for me at least) was within the first few days of joining the forum. I didn't have any golf pictures that were mine to publish so I went with the interim default avatars and just never thought about an avatar again.

The thought process was: 1) Get an avatar, 2) Get a signature, 3) Get a handicap, 4) Learn how to play golf

In retrospect I really should have juggled those priorities around.

I'll do some digging for a different avatar. But only because I'm famous now and its what my adoring fans request of me.. (too much?)

Now you make my original post look silly. Everyone's going to think I'm a liar. :-D

How deep did you have to dig for that?

As deep as the yellow B330-RX was in my bag. The head cover was on the club so I didn't have to dig at all for that.

Wait... was that a rhetorical question?

Just got word that as of tomorrow (or maybe the next day) this should be the default avatar for everyone new to the site:

http://thesandtrap.com/b/avatar.jpg

I've changed a few people's already (for the heck of it).

Reading about avatars and default etc.

But how does one get an avatar?

Does it have to be a .gif or a .jpg or what?

Maybe some instructions on how to get one's own avatar would be beneficial?

Yes all you have to do is find an avatar and it can be a .jpg picture to your liking.    Save it on your desktop and then copy it in to your profile.

Ok, I am an old blonde, which is worse than a young blonde, and have no idea what an avatar is or how to get one. When you're through laughing, would you share your wisdom with this airhead and tell me how? HAHAHA thanks!

Just go into your profile, top right corner on desktop and look for upload avatar or change avatar.

    • Let us be clear, unless you have proof of cheating, you just sound like a case of sour grapes.  In our club we have a guy who won club titles for many years.  Yes, he was a low single digit handicapper, but there have been quite a few others who played at his level.  Yet his mental strength and experience helped him win in many years when he shouldn't have.  Did he sandbag.  DEFINITELY NOT.  Did he just minimize his mistakes and pull out shots as and when needed.  Definitely.

    • First off please forgive me if this is not a proper post or not in the proper location, still learning the ropes around here. Second, it's important that I mention I am very new to the game with only about 10 rounds of golf under my belt, most being 9 holes. Only this year have I started playing 18. That being said, I am hooked, love the game and am very eager to learn and improve. To give you an idea of my skill, the last 2 18 rounds I played were 110 and 105. Not great at all, however I am slowly improving as I learn. Had been having bad slicing issues with the driver and hybrids but after playing some more and hitting the range, I've been able to improve on that quite a bit and have been hitting more straight on average. Irons have always come easier to me as far as hitting straight for some reason. Wedges have needed a lot of improvement, but I practice chipping about 20-30 mins about 3-5 times a week and that's helped a lot. Today I went to the range and started to note down some distance data, mind you I am averaging the distances based off my best guess compared to the distance markers on the range. I do not currently own a range finder or tracker. From reading some similar posts I do understand that filling gaps is ideal, but I am having a some issues figuring out those gaps and understanding which clubs to keep and remove as some gaps are minimal between clubs. Below is an image of the chart I put together showing the clubs and average distances I've been hitting and power applied. For some reason I am hitting my hybrids around the same distances and I am not sure why. Wondering if one of them should be removed. I didn't notice a huge loft difference either. The irons I have are hand me downs from my grandfather and after playing with them a bit, I feel like they're just not giving me what could potentially be there. The feel is a bit hard/harsh and underwhelming if that makes sense and I can't seem to get decent distances from them. Wondering if I should be looking to invest in some more updated irons and if those should be muscle backs or cavity backs? My knowledge here is minimal. I have never played with modern fairway woods, only the classic clubs that are actually wood and much smaller than modern clubs. I recently removed the 4 and 5 woods from my bag as I was never using them and I don't hit them very well or very far. Wondering if I should look into some more modern fairway wood options? I appreciate any feedback or advice anyone is willing to give, please forgive my lack of knowledge. I am eager to learn! Thank you.
    • I would think that 3 in a row with the same players might get some behind the scenes examination from the SCGA if they were suspect.  Are there any clubs questioning the results?
    • What simple fact? A golf match is not a coin flip — there is a fact for you. I'm trying to help you, and you're throwing out what could easily be called sour grapes. Come with FACTS, not weak analogies. Then you've got nothing. Hopefully they've done a better job of making their case. 😛
