Congressional US Open rough........not too tough!!

I dunno....I've been watching the US open,  and the rough doesn't impress me.  It looks ragged, but easy..........IMO

considering how shaggy/ragged it looks, yea...It's the US Open, but really??????????????????????????

With that said, my home course rough is nearly as bad!!!  Miss a fairway/Ur...screwed!@

Miss a fairway on my course........and you have serious issues..............

I've been watching the US Open......IMO, the course setup is a big weak.  Heck...I nearly play that kind of rough every day!!!

Must be nice. There are almost no courses around where I live that have rough anything like what you have. Don't know about the private courses, don't get to play them, but all the public courses have little to no rough. Not that they can't have it, it's just that it would slow play up too much. Even the Robert Trent Jones courses the rough is very playable but at the same time it's not as nearly as wide as in your photo and beyond that your lucky to find your ball in knee high grass.

As far as the Open goes from what I've seen, the rough looks fair. The course setup the last couple of years the rough has not been so harsh that the players just have to take a wedge and hack it out, they at least give the players a chance.

13 under after two days?  An unprecendented score in the US Open.  The rough must be a little tame, the greens a little easier than usual, or something.  Sure, he's a talented kid, and it probably sounds like I'm taking away from his play a little but...   but it's also possible the conditions are more suited to 131 after two rounds than many/most/all other recent Open venues.

i definitely feel there is something out of whack but couldn't give a clue as to what it is.  Its not that Rory has had to worry too much about the rough(he's been hitting on a string since it started) but his score is just so absurd compared to everyone else.

The scores in general seem a tad low for a US Open---usually it seems that a couple under par is the leader.  Even neglecting McIlroy, there are a bunch of guys at -2 after two days.  However, I'd say that means it's just a tiny bit easier than usual, because it really doesn't look like anyone else will go much below -4 or -5.

McIlroy at -11 (and Yang at -5) after two days just means he (they) are having a great couple rounds---if the course were "easy" we'd have a lot of other guys pushing low.  I'd expect tougher pin positions for the weekend, so I would be very surprised if anyone else shoots super-low...

well the key is the amount of rain they have gotten. That makes for a soft course and if you put these guys on a soft course, they are gong to be impressive. I think maybe they could have narrowed the fairways a bit or something.

Try playing on a links course with rough grown upto your knees and see how you get on..............

It's really a challenge for the USGA to make the course play hard.   They can't control the weather and it's rained almost every day.   Yes the rough is a bit less than I would have expected but I'm sure they had factored in a certain amount of firmness.   The fairways and greens have been made much easier by the rain and there's also been little to no wind.     Mother nature neutered what could have been a a very difficult course/setup.

Driver: VRS 9.5 degrees

Fairway Wood: 13 degrees
Hybrid: A3 19 degrees

Irons: i20's  Yellow dot

Wedges: Vokey's 52, 56 & 60

Putter: 2 ball

Ball: Penta; ProV

Thin to win won't work here.......LOL.  Prairie grass defines the course and is present on every hole.  Forced carries off every tee and placed in just that right spot to catch any ball that strays too far from the fairway. You can't play from it....lost ball and 2 stroke penalty virtually every time you find it....

I agree on the rain and soft greens, but there is no excuse for the weak rough.  they had all of 2011 to grow some rough, and they failed to do so.

The week before it was almost 100 every day so they had to water the greens heavily to keep them from getting out of hand. The week of it rained almost every day at some point so the greens got softer than expected. It was the greens that created scoring opportunities if they could have got them as firm and fast as they like all those shots out of the rough wouldn't have held on the green. The rough was about 4 inches long which would have been suitable if the greens were firm and fast but weather didn't allow it. The only thing I thought they could have done better was made them play more yardage except for saturday since it's moving day.

Driver: i15, 3 wood: G10, Hybrid: Nickent 4dx, Irons: Ping s57, Wedges: Mizuno MPT 52, 56, 60, Putter: XG #9

i have to say this...but to take something away from rory in this case would be incredibly wrong to do. was the rough incredibly penal compared to other years? eh...i'd say prolly it's about normal. the scoring came in the greens. as for rory...you can't talk about his score and how it would've been or not been impacted by the rough since he was basically NEVER in it...

I would agree with the above that it was the greens that made the course easier than many US Opens.  The rough was penal but was mitigated by the soft greens.  But what Rory did in putting away the competition was remarkable.  They all got to play the same course, he just played it better.

      I won the net division of the match play tournament. Yesterday was the semifinals and my opponent conceded the round to me on the 2nd hole because he knew he would be unavailable for the final today. I got lucky there and got a bye into the finals. We did end up playing our match as an exhibition and I would have lost. It was the worst round of the tournament for me and I think knowing that the match didn't matter might have been a factor. I'll write up a blog post about the whole experience at some point. Today I won, 3&1. My opponent and I halved the first three holes much to his credit. I was striping it and he just kept scrambling and hanging in there. We both blew up on the par 3 4th hole but I ended up taking that one by holing an 8-footer for double bogey. I went up 2 after he put two in the penalty area on #5 and promptly gave that hole back by putting my tee shot into the penalty area on #6 by a foot. It's important to note that most of the penalty areas on this course are deemed environmentally sensitive areas and we are not allowed to enter or play shots out of them. So even though I physically was able to play a shot from where I was on #6, I could not, by rule. I followed that by winning #7, making a 25' birdie putt and finished the front 9 3 up after he had some bunker trouble on #9. I went up 4 by winning #11 (we both sucked on that hole but he missed the putt to halve). On #12 we both hit the green with our tee shots. He hit his first putt past the hole and I lagged mine inside of 4' with an uphill putt for par. His putt for par was too long again, just inside of mine but definitely outside of gimme range. I gave him that one for bogey. I felt at the time, being 4 up, that I didn't want to win the hole because he ends up missing a 3-footer and fourputted or something. I wanted to win the hole by making my par putt. I did not. He probably would have made the putt anyway (he's not me after all, and he made everything in that range all day) but it seemed like the sporting thing to do at the time. He was genuinely surprised I gave it to him, butI felt good about it. Then it almost bit me in the ass as he started to mount a comeback. We halved #13 after he made a great up & down and he took #14 with a long par putt. He also won #15 with a 5' birdie putt. We halved #16 with a pair of bogeys after he put his tee shot in the water and I missed a 4-footer for the win. We got to #17 and I was still 2 up. He hit his tee shot just off the back of the green to an extended apron area short of the back bunker and I put mine on the green pin high but 30' away. He was actually closer so I played first and hit it within a foot for par. He didn't hole out for birdie which sealed the match and ended up making bogey on the hole. With the pressure off, we both played the par 5 #18 well. He played it as a three shot hole like a normal person and hit it to 8' and two-putted for par. I striped my drive and ended up with a downhill lie to an uphill approach like 180 yards out and gave myself the green light to go for it in two. Thin hooked it into thick rough to the left of the green with a bunker in between and hit a high flop to 4', probably my best shot of the day. Made the birdie putt.
