I just had a question for those of you who lost weight and saw a drop in distance.  While losing the weight, did you just do cardio?  Or did you lift weights as well.  I lost 30 pounds in college and saw a drop in distance but it all came back when I started to lift.

It depends on the golfer and how much weight they lost.  There are a number of variables that go into the swing that can affect distance.

If you swing properly and use your body you could lose some distance as there's less mass behind the swing.  The counter to that is less mass could result in higher swing speeds which would potentially add distance.

If you're not lifting specifically for golf, I doubt the effects of lifting will have much effect unless you replace the mass lost in fat with muscle.  On there own, bench presses and arm curls won't do much for your golf swing.

I actually started hitting it further. I think the weight loss helped me turn more and as a result the ball goes further now. I was 14 stone I'm now 12.

Really depends... muscle being more dense I would think would have a bigger effect... Point being muscle loss not weight loss would effect distance. I say this because although basic Physics dictates that less weight=less inertia = less force F=M*A a believe a 30 pound fat loss would aid in mobility  positively and a 30 pound muscle loss would be pretty devastating.

Sorry to geek out on you here but 30 pound fat loss cant hurt your distance...  that's my two cents.

I also gained distance with my weight loss, especially with the Driver.   I think I have a much more consistent turn which helps me generate more power off the tee,

For me it depended on the swing, my old swing matched my body. I was about 280, 6'1" tall, but i wasn't fat around the belly really. I had some muscle on my as well, so i was a lean looking 280 to say the least. But i had a good lateral shift right and then left. I have really good timing, i got away with alot in that swing, got down to near a single handicap. But i could just demolish the golf ball.

I have lost near 65lbs in over 3 years, and during that time i did see some distance lose. Mostly because my swing fell apart for a bit, i had a nasty pull cut that took me about a year to get rid of. I lost about 15-20 yards. Now i gained nearly all that distance back, my accuracy is way up. I don't swing as hard to get the distance anymore. I am totally in balance 95% of my shots, which is a huge improvement. I use to not hold a finish because i really couldn't, now i can pose for the camera so to say.

So take the weight loss as a good thing, you might loose some distance. But work on gaining some muscle, work alot on the core, and balance. You will gain more back and have a better swing for it, and a healthier life.
