My goal last summer was to shoot a round of bogey golf I didn't get there last summer.  This summer by the end of summer I want to be playing at least 75% of my rounds at a bogey golf rate.  To succeed at these goals I will hope to do the following.

1. Get a new set of clubs . I have never bought a new club and have been using a set of mixed hand me downs and garage sale specials.  These year I have saved up and will be getting a new set of clubs fit to me.

2. Get a GPS or rangefinder. I have trouble telling the distances so knowing how far away I am will really help me out.  I am leaning towards a GPS.  The garmin systems have all the local courses I usually play and with the ability to place distances it might make my shot selection a little better as well.

3. Increased approach accuracy. Last summer I really worked on my short game ball striking so that I was at least putting it onto the green. This summer I am going to work on getting the bal closer to the hole so that at the worst I am left with is a more manageable 2 putt situation.

4. Keep putts under 33 per round. I don't get a lot of 1 putt situations so I am really trying to cut down on the number of 3+ putts I make per round.  With a little work from number 3 I should be able to increase the amount of 1 putts and decrease the amount of 3+ putts.

5. Really work on my long irons/hybrids. My biggest trouble situation is using my long irons/hybrids.  My 3-4 irons are pretty well useless ause I have no confidence in those clubs.  Borrowed a couple hybrids at the end of last season from my brother and hit them a little better then the long irons so I think my new set will include hybrids instead of the long irons.

6. Increase distance. I am hoping with the combination of new clubs and increased play this winter my distances will improve over the summer.

7. Play as much as I can. Play as many games as I can with my dad, brother and friends.

8. Play new courses. Travel to some of the nicer out of town courses a little more often.

Well,to re-kit my whole bag which is in progress.Just got the R11 driver, luv it.Getting my on hold RBZ 3-wood tomorrow. Now for my irons,im contemplating between R11 and TM tour Preferred CB,s.Thats one of my goals. My second goal is to come down from a 13 handicap to a 10 or a 9.I dont think a four point handicap drop is asking to much.Especially if im signed up for a five pack of lessons.Bring on 2012.

With my partially "re-kitted" bag (existing Ping G15 Driver, new G15 Fairway, new Burner 2.0 irons:

  1. Get back under 90 and stay there (eluded me last year)
  2. Stick with a swing pattern (S&T;) and get consistent with it
  3. Try to achieve 75% Drives in Fairway (50% last year)
  4. Stay consistent during round (nothing more than bogey)
  5. Play within myself (Don't try shots I have no chance in making or can't make anymore
  6. Call my wife for a ride when I stay too long at 19th hole!

Break 90 by June, break 85 by end of year. This will be done by straightening out my drive. I can bomb that thing when I get into it, just a matter of keeping it left consistently. Putting and irons are actually pretty decent. When I hit the fairway with a long drive I can usually par or bogey a hole, even an occasional bird.

1) Always practice with a purpose or a specific focus in mind when at the driving range.

2) Increase GIR % by 20 over last year.

3) Shoot in the low 80s in at least one tournament setting.

4) Become a single-digit handicap by year-end.

I'm thinking about playing some tournaments. The FSGA has a real nice set of one-day events on some really nice courses - Disney Magnolia, Grand Cypress, Tradition...in the $60 - $80 range.

http://www.fsga.org/thegame/schedule.asp?gameType=fsga-game-tampa

Nothing majorly serious, but it's still competition, and I haven't played competitively in years.

So my goal is to get my game to a point where I can break 80 in these events. That means I better get my handicap under a 5.

1) Build a new set of irons (love components).

2) Hit my hybrids better.

3) Start playing local tournaments.

4) Break 80 (shot 81 4 times last year).

Beware of old dudes with old clubs and new grips.

  1. Hit more fairways - Over 60%
  2. Hit more greens - Upper 60's
  3. Get better with 5-15 footers.  Don't feel like I make enough.

If I do 2 out of the above 3, my scores will come down.  I was only hitting 50% of my fairways at the end of the year...not acceptable.  Irons were good but i was putting myself in some awkward spots.  The putting is a matter of getting some reps on the green and getting my setup locked in.  I don't three putt very often and I make nearly all of my "gimme" putts inside 3 feet. Just need to find a good groove on those outside the 5 foot range.

Fairways and Greens.

Obviously we are all on a continual quest to lower our scores, but what are you going to be working on this year, specifically? I am going to re-tool my set a little bit and probably drop my 4-iron in favor of a hybrid and also replace my 3-hybrid.

My main goal, though, is to lock in my 3-wood and be able to hit that, at will, 220-230 off the tee dead down the middle.

As far as scoring, I'd like to shoot par a couple of times this year (came close a few times last year, but couldn't close). To do so, I plan on trying to lock in a consistent tempo and spend a lot of time on my course's chipping/putting green.

    • Day 48. Got out at lunch to the range to hit some driver shots. Haven’t had much practice there. Focused on setup suggested by @iacas and found some very playable results. I did try to hit a couple of bunker shots after that with much less success 🙃
    • Got a rare birdie on #18 Par 5.  Drive was good and left me in range of the green.  I was @ 210 from the center and needed @ 180 to clear a hazard area.  Green had bunkers lest, right and on back. had been struggling and most shots were short so I took the 225 club figuring back of green hit well. i did hit it well, @ 229 per SS and dead on—kind at the pin.  Ended up @ 1 foot off the back in short rough and lucky for me it was a back pin placement.  Chipped about 15 feet leaving a 3 feet putt for par which I sunk.
    • Yea, so to clarify for me. I do not feel the clubface much in the swing. I feel the weight of the club. I can feel if I hit the club off the heel or toe. When I try to feel if the clubface is open or closed in the swing, I feel it more with my hands, and less of the clubhead. I would classify majority of my swings as not feeling like the clubface does much of all. It feels like I hold the clubface open. In the finish, it doesn't feel like my left hand faces the ground. It feels more like it faces the sky. I will try to be more aware of this, but it was just the sensation I got when I was making what felt like good swings. For the most part, I was hitting slight draws or slight pushes.  On this golf trip, I had to hit a low 8 iron around a tree to the green. I made an alignment adjustment, and actively try to roll my hands a bit more to get it to sling around the corner. I do have a habit of not adjusting how the clubface comes through impact, and I can still hit the ball straight-ish even moving the ball way back in my stance and trying to swing out more.  Yea, my feels are more hands and arms, less actually feeling the clubface.
