I would go for Luke Donald or Jason Day but after last 2 weeks I think Sergio will have a chance!

I like Lee Westwood.  In his last 7 majors, he has 3 top 3's, a top 10, and 2 top 16's.

You could argue the fact that's he's been so close without winning is a reason he won't win one.

In my bag:

Driver: Titleist TSi3 | 15º 3-Wood: Ping G410 | 17º 2-Hybrid: Ping G410 | 19º 3-Iron: TaylorMade GAPR Lo |4-PW Irons: Nike VR Pro Combo | 54º SW, 60º LW: Titleist Vokey SM8 | Putter: Odyssey Toulon Las Vegas H7

Westwood doesn't really have a lot of scar tissue from those close calls. He missed putts on the final holes at Torrey Pines and Turnberry to get into playoffs, his final round at the 2010 Masters would have been good enough for the green jacket most years, and he's been the best of the rest on several occasions after someone had drawn well ahead of the field. I'm still selling him now; not because I don't think he can win a major, but because I no longer think is a sure bet.

The current number one player, Luke Donald, I am bullish on. He's proven over the last 18 months that he's the best player in the world, week-in, week-out. His performance in majors in 2011 wasn't all spectacular, but Congressional, Sandwich, and AAC all clearly favored long hitters. Look at the major venues the next two years: Olympic, Lytham, Kiawah, Merion, Muirfield, Oak Hill. With the exception of Kiawah, those are all shorter championship courses where position off the tee is more important than distance; most of those courses are also infamous for the difficulty of their greenside hazards. In short, the next batch of major venues are very suited to Luke's game, and I don't see how he won't be collecting hardware in the next two years.

In my UnderArmour Links stand bag...

Yes, but people made that same argument about Phil Mickelson back in the day.  Now look how many majors he has.

I really believe Westwood will win a major.  History is on his side... I believe that all players who have held the world #1 ranking have at some point won a major.

Let's just hope it's Day or Scott or Ishikawa.

I hope it's not Westwood. He's got a touch of the "Montgomery" about him and as far as I'm concerned, he does nothing to turn non golfers on to our game.

In the race of life, always back self-interest. At least you know it's trying.

I think with new found confidence 2012 is year of Sergio.  In the Masters.

I'm a little surprised no one has nominated Dustin Johnson yet. So I'll do it, even if I already voted for Jason Day.

I'd be thinking Sergio, Luke, Westy and Scott are looking good for wins. In any order. I'd be mighty happy with those four to win personally.

This is like my 8 millionth post on this thread on who will win their first major in 2012, so I won't take any credit if one of my picks wins, but Gary Woodland has made me into a believer over the last 12 months. He finished 17th on the money list too. He needs to tighten up some things, but I really like him to win one at some point.

His six career results in majors are:

2009- US Open (T47)

2010- US Open (CUT)

2011- The Masters (T24), the US Open (T23), the Open Championship (T30), The PGA (T12)

Pretty rock solid last year.

    • Day 314 - Putting some things together. Better grip/setup, fuller backswing, better finishing position. Filmed some swings, happy with the progress.
    • Day 130: did a stack session.
    • Day 206 (24 Nov 24)  - An easy session with the 54deg wedge and hard foam balls / one simple goal - distance control thru backswing length while not decelerating.  Had a playing partner comment they noticed me decelerating on a couple short wedge shots in last round.  Hit from distances from close to 40yds down to 20.
    • Musgrove Mill hole #15 was converted to a par 3 after Hurricane Helene. Today, I had 145 from the tee which is a perfect 9-iron for me. I aimed just right of the hole and pulled it a few feet. Clanked off the stick down into the hole and ricocheted out of the hole 13’ away. Drained the putt for a birdie after repairing the hole which was damaged . Not sure if it would have counted as a HIO, but I was pretty excited!
    • Day 55 - 2024-11-24 Did five levels of Operation 36 on GSPro (different courses). 🙂 Was -4 from 200 yards (32) intentionally laying up on each hole (i.e. not hitting a 5I or something). Shot… 22, 24, 26 from 25, 50, and 100 yards. I forget my 150-yard score, but obviously it was < 36. Putting was odd… (and I did it with the wedge or a 7I or whatever was in my hand).
