I've been home with a bad cold, so I've got to see most of this tournament. The 16th is a riot to watch, but I hope that they only  do it in one tournament a year and keep it unique.  I like the players who ask the crowd to whoop it up during their swing.  When they are all cheering, it is probably easier to hit because it would be like white noise.

One question, how do they get the line between the fairway and dormant grass to be so precise?

I cringed and eventually skipped past it.  I enjoyed Fowler urging the crowd to cheer and wearing 4 hats, etc., and other genuine things that loosen up the mood, but that was just plain bad.

I agree with both of those.

If they make it a Wasted Management only tradition, crank it up ... but it would be tragic if it permeated into other tournies and golf in general.

And I was thinking the same thing about the white noise.

I don't think it will permeate other tournaments.  It's been around for a while, and although it seems to grow in hype/production each year, it seems widely accepted as being only enjoyable (read: tolerable) for one tourney a year.

If it did ever permeate other events, my guess is that it would start to show itself at TPC Sawgrass during The Players, because the environment is already suitable for it.

Other than having four down-to-earth and well liked golfers, a bad performance is exactly why Golf Boys went viral.  None of them have performance talent and yet, in the opinions of many, it is funny because of it.  These players simply do not care that they cannot perform (dancing, music)--they just know how to have fun in a game that is notorious for being uptight.

This is the first time I have watched the Waste Management tournament.  The 16th is interesting, it is nice to see players embrace it, but I also hope it does not spread to other tournaments.

Speaking of something "plain bad"--mustaches.  Makes some of these golfers look like porn stars including Fowler.

Yep. Made me want to to puke.

Talk about trying too hard.

Ben Crane needs to speed up play rather than try to suck up to fans with his one joke.

Considering how much of a squeaky clean image the PGA tries to portray I'm surprised they still allow golfers and caddies to smoke during their rounds.

If you can smoke while you play whey not crack open a beer as well?

Thought this image of Levin on the first hole was pretty funny:

Second week in a row that we've seen a 6 shot lead disappear on Sunday. Can someone teach these new guys how to hold a lead? (Kidding) Although I never root for anyone to lose a lead, it is fun to watch close golf on a Sunday.

Was thinking same thing. If Kyle Stanley wins it, that'd be a great way to come back from last week. I'm pulling for him.

Just saw some footage where Spencer Levin's tee shot ended up in the middle of two chollas.  Amazed he had to play the ball from between them and then pick out pieces of cactus from his shirt.  If there is not an exception for that, I think USGA and PGA officials need to play from cholla--that crap can be painful!  It is nicknamed jumping cactus for a reason.

Well shorty I hope you're eating a little humble, pie after last week's "no sympathies" post.

I agree when they showed Levin puffing away I thought it was kind of odd. Don't care if you smoke or not but this is a sport right?

Here was my post after Stanley's meltdown last week -

Thrilled he rebounded this week with a win. That buries what happened at Torrey.

    • To flog this subject even further, if that's even possible, this article from Golf Monthly just appeared today in one of my news feeds. Written by a golf writer in the UK who I never heard of, he's basically saying that there should be only 3-5 rounds from the most recent 20 that should count towards the average and only competitive rounds should count. He claims the erratic scorers would have less of an advantage than they do now. He makes a lot of references to "club golfers" in the UK being the ones who are mostly dissatisfied. https://share.google/qmZZBEoJvOxHxJGil  In my experience with my league where we have golfers with indexes ranging from 5 to 40, looking at the weekly results from the past two years, I can detect no pattern that would substantiate the claim that the current system gives an unfair advantage to either erratic golfers (aren't we all?) or higher handicappers. Apparently though, at least in the UK, this seems to be "a thing."
