Believe it or not I've played 3 or 4 courses where there was a shooting range right next to it. Actually one course I used to play frequently has shooting range right next to the second hole but they built up a 15 ft mound of dirt all the way around it so you can't see it.

Same thing next to hole 5 on my home course. On a windy day you can hear and see the shotgun slug falling down around you.

ive played this course about a hundred times. the police have a shooting range near by but it has to be over half a mile a way if not more.  also the shooting range they are refering to is at least two miles away.A stray bullet can go anywhere though, even from a pistol. my son practices there for high school golf. Theres a school and big neighborhood right on the course, i hope this is just a freak accident.  Ive shot a lot of different animals growing up and have never seen a bullet protrude from a wound. bullet must have been shot from a long distance if it didnt embed deeply.

If you have any knowledge of bullets whizzing through the air or hitting something at the golf course (or nearby), please call 305-4220 and let us know!  I am helping the guy that was shot out there earlier this month.

Which, of course, begs the question - why did they not shut it down after the first incident?  Only in TX, man.  Luckily nobody was hit this time.

only in Texas would they shut down the public golf course instead of the private shooting range!

Ha - I guess I've been here long enough that I never even considered it a possibility that they would shut down the shooting range!

*from reading the stories, though . .it's actually more likely it's a landowner being careless vs the shooting range.  Again . .only in TX would shooting another person be considered the product of "carelessness".  Other places might call it . .oh, I don't know .. "extreme negligence"?

Seems to me that if it happened twice in a short period of time either the shooting range is out of control and/or poorly designed and/or the shootings were a deliberate act.

You know of course that AZ isn't exactly a bastion of liberalism and we have a few armed citizens ourselves.

I'm with you.  I live in Texas and have friends in Arizona with way more guns than sense.

I live in S. Florida and there's a shooting range at a local park that points out into the Everglades.  There is a freeway that runs nearby and there was a hotel/office complex proposed to build on the Everglade side of the freeway...Needless to say a big dust up with the enviromental folks until someone realized that the hotel would have been in a direct line with the target range.  Thus no hotel.

Just saw this post. Hope no one minds me bringing this up. But, I was supposed to play that course on that day. A friend and I decided to try a different course but told no one. So half way though our round our phones blew up with people worried we might have been shot. We could not believe that happened and were happy we made a last minute change.

In my bag:

Nike Mach Speed Black

Nike Dymo 3 wood

TaylorMade Burner 3 hybrid

Mizuno MP-53 PW-3

TaylorMade RAC 52, 56, 60

    • Day 27 - 2026-01-16 Played 18 with some of the usual "too many voices" going on when I'm working on swing stuff. Fun to get out in great bay area winter weather.
    • I know one recent college grad who's trying the same thing.  This guy was a Division III All-American, went on to play one year at Division I LSU, and is not working hard.  He won the Gulf States Open, a pro event, and made it to the second stage of the Korn Ferry Tour School late in the fall.  And didn't make the cut to get to the final stage.  I won't talk about swing or play stuff, but I believe there are a couple of things that are essential.  Obviously, talent, and drive, or work ethic.   I can't tell you how to do it, but you HAVE to get through it.  Golf is going to be your life, and it takes lots of work. Two more things that are really critical.  You'll need the facility to be able to practice.  My young friend stayed in Baton Rouge, as a past player on the team he can still use the LSU practice facilities.  And money.  Its unlikely you'll be able to work a full-time job and practice the way you will need to.  You'll probably need backing, from a parent, from a consortium of friends or club members., something to support you. Good luck, its not an easy path, but anything is possible.  Another young man from our area, Mike Brennan, just won for the first time on the "big" PGA Tour.
    • No one in the world is as smart as Phil thinks he is.
    • Get more comfortable with being uncomfortable. If you don’t like practicing then give up now. You don’t have the passion to become a pro. Unless that mentality changes you won’t do well under stressful situations.    Call the PGA Tour and ask. They probably have resources available.
