Steve Elkington: Ok, so he might have plenty of good golf left, but I heard him on the radio yesterday, and he is pure gold. He would just about double the collective golf swing IQ over at the TGC. He's hilariously blunt and unapologetic with his opinions, but he does it in a way that isn't crude, childish, or offensive. He has diverse interests outside of golf and can intelligently discuss varied topics.

Why on earth would they hire him when they already have Wayne Player?

Because Wayne Player is lousy? All he says is "core" and "rotation" and "post up on the left side." And I think Rich is talking about general commenting, not just golf instruction/swing related stuff, and Wayne's never played on the PGA Tour, let alone won a major.

Use Twitter and overwhelm GC with Tweets. Worked for Jason Gore to get an exemption.

Kill slow play. Allow walking. Reduce ineffective golf instruction. Use environmentally friendly course maintenance.

Elk is always a great interview on Rome. The question is - will a channel owned by a major network hire someone that doesnt appear to be a puppet?

Good call. Elk's perfect for tv--but any network the gives Eric Kuselias four hours a day is not exactly great a finding talent

Agree, there is something weird about how TGC handles their talent. When they "find" talent, they can let it go too easily---Peter Kessler, Vince Cellini, Scott Van Pelt, Dottie Pepper...... Elk would be great in the booth, off/on the course, swing instruction, you name it. PS I would fully support your Verchenova campaign, if you join one for Elk.:-)

Don't know if this has been posted before, but one of my favorite Elkington stories....
With Colin Montgomerie in the country for the Johnnie Walker Classic it seems as good a time as any to relay this fine story Steve Elkington told Golf Digest a few years ago:

"That would be the 1995 World Match Play at Wentworth. I had beaten him in a playoff for the PGA Championship at Riviera a couple months earlier, so when we got paired in the second round, it was being built up over there as a rematch, a chance for him to gain revenge.

Anyway, we're having lunch in the clubhouse there, which is a castle. Lisa and I are eating a little sandwich off in the corner. Monty has maybe 25 people at his table, royalty and all, with a fabulous buffet. Part of the spread is this huge custard castle, a replica of the one we're eating in.

So Monty gets up and goes toward the custard, and he wiped out the whole west side of the clubhouse, an entire custard wing including maybe part of the locker room. I think to myself, Isn't that nice of Monty, scooping up all that custard for all those people at his table to share?

Well, damned if he doesn't sit down and eat the whole thing himself. I turned to Lisa and said, "There ain't a man alive who can eat that much custard and beat me." I won, 2 and 1."

Whew! I wasn't sure which way to go on that one, but I'm glad you cleared that up. My opinion of your knowledge was in danger of taking a hit! :)

I contemplated using a winky face smiley or something, but thought to myself: "Nah, no one will think I'm serious." lol

I had to stop watching that show because of Wayne. I don't know how the other pros on the show do it when all Wayne talks about get "getting your core through to a a nice balanced finish" for EVERY SINGLE PLAYER. Yeah, Wayne. You're right, that's exactly what every tour pro is currently working on.

Anyway, sorry, back on topic we go.
