Just for kicks, if your having a bad fron 9 with your buddies, try picking 2 clubs from the bag and only use those 2, no switching clubs. So, if you use say, a 5w and an 8i, use ONLY those clubs for the rest of the round. It makes for some interesting golf, and usually will shoot better than expected because of the concentration you put fourth.

14 as per signature. I often wonder though if I took 5 or 6 clubs out for a month whether my scoring would get worse. I am not so sure it would but think it would help me imcrease the number of options I have (flight, bump and run etc) with each shot and may lower my scores after I put them back in.

What does everyone else think?

I shot my best nine, in my inaugural golfing season, carrying only 5 clubs: 3W,7I,PW,SW,Putter -- it was a 40 on a rather short 3,100 yard (120 slope) front nine.

I carry 14 clubs in my bag, my signature will describe them. I belong to a club so I could probably remove a few just cause I might rarely use them. To avoid this I play from different tees and I usually try some creative shots while I play to keep it fun.

I know this is an old thread but I was wondering the same thing, how many clubs go you play with and if you play with 5 or 6 less would your scoring get worse do you think? I plan on playing only eight the rest of this season starting Monday and I think I am going to score better. Im too optimistic sometimes though.:-)

I use 13, dropped my 3 iron, seems to go the same as my 5 wood, but the 5 is more consistent for me.

Never more than 14 in my bag if the round is going to count for handicap.  If I am trying out clubs, I may carry more but those rounds do not count.  As far as using all 14...sometimes I could probably get by with 12 or 13.

did you know that back in the early thirties there was no limit to the number of clubs you could carry. guys were winning tournaments in the same year with at many as 31 clubs (7 wedges) and as little as 7 clubs. many players were on the low side carrying 8. i forgot the year, i think 36 or 37 is when they decided on the 14 club limit.

I carry 14 clubs, but in reality I rarely use all 14 in a round of golf. The course I frequent the most right now, I could easily get by with only 5 clubs. I actually can't remember the last time I used all 14 clubs in one round. I carry 4 metal woods (D-7W), 6 irons (4-9), 3 wedges PW, AW, SW), and my putter. Sometimes I might take out the 4i, and add my LW depending what's going on that day.

14.  Used to crave for a rule change to carry more clubs.   I am now thinking I can shed 1 or 2 clubs.

I carry 14 now.  Years ago when I used a carry bag, I would  often carry either even or odd # irons to lighten the load leaving the driver out also.  It was  good practice since the gaps between clubs were doubled.  I would learn to hit a lot more shots.

    • I appreciate that you have taken the time to come back and update. Based on what was previously discussed I feel like the points were; forged, feel good, price, and possibly players distance. If you like the "looks" of those Maxfli irons and if price is a major point, then going straight to the source, Maltby, might make sense. Specifically, the TS3 iron. I was looking into this myself and found some reviews: Fit2YouGolf, Lets Play Thru, and ELITE FIT GOLF. As per your update I found the Maxfli to be ~$1300 fitted the way I wanted. Where the TS3 with the same fitting and assembled by Golfworks was less than $750. I suppose the downside is to actually hit the iron you will need to get lucky and find someone in your golf circle who will let you hit theirs or order a 6 or 7 iron to test. However, the way I look at that is being equivalent to some fittings. If you like the results and buy, then the fitting is free, otherwise the price of the fitting is a sunk cost. If name brand is important, then I submit for your consideration - THE BEST OVERALL IRON of 2024...... FACT !! 😉 A bit tongue in cheek that but also, I feel some good points were discussed.
