My Edel Wedges (Or 'Super Bounce and Why It's Good for You' or 'The Sweet Spot Is Finally in the Right Place!

I can't wait to get my hands on a set of these wedges.  I just signed up for a fitting on Monday.  Hopefully I will get my new wedges before my April 27th trip to Florida.

I will let everyone know what I think and provide pictures when they come in.

It was suggest that we should use wedges with the highest amount of bounce, otherwise your swing will be adjusted by the club.  If you are a sweeper, do you still purchase a high bounce wedge such as the "edel's driver"?  such that you can learn the right swing.

No, you'll still have some golfers who don't hit down. When you do a fitting it becomes pretty obvious. We do all we can to make people take their "normal" swings - not the swings they've "made up" to "fit" their wedges - and then see how the club interacts with the ground from there.

Most people, when you give them a new wedge, will make a "normal" swing because it's different to them, it's not "their wedge" so they kind of revert back to their "normal swing" automatically.

If someone is a true sweeper - Steve Stricker kind of is even with his 8-iron, a picker of the golf ball - then he'll need a bit less bounce than someone who prefers to be a bit sharper on the ball.

Well I just got fit for my wedges yesterday, and I just wanted to followup. I started out on the lie board, and that showed me that my current lob wedge (58*)  didn't have enough bounce for my swing.  I then proceeded to hit a few of the different wedge grinds until the tape mark was thin and right along the bounce line of the club.

After that he had me hit a variety of pitches with my new lob (60*) and I could not believe how easy it was to get the ball up in the air.  I immediately felt more confidence around the greens because the club was just sliding under the ball.  I never realized how much drag or should I say "dig" my old wedges had on short shots.  Just like a few early posts mentioned I feel that now with the Edel's I will use my 60 degree wedge all the time because of how easy it is to hit.

Next we talked about distance gaping, and I hit a number of shots with my wedges 54 and 58 and the Edel's (60 and 56).  I was surprised to see that with the 56 I was consistent carrying the ball 8-10 yards further than my current 54!  I could tell that through impact my current wedge would tend to dig and I think that caused the Edel's to be longer.  We ended up choosing a 52-56-60 combo to best cover my distance gaps.

Finally we talked about trajectory, and I said that with my flat swing, I would like a bit higher ball flight with my wedges to be able to access tight pins and give me more options around the greens.  He decided that the Dynamic Gold Spinner shafts would best suit my needs.

Then I added my last name and the colors of my alma mater (Go Johnnies!), and that is all she wrote!

Can't wait to get these wedges and try them out.  I hope they come quick because I am going to Florida in about three weeks.

@iacas Trappers, so the 60 has 18 degrees of bounce. I think the trapper has the third most bounce behind the Driver and Digger. Question: Would the 56 and 52 have the same bounce as the 60 if they are all trappers, or do they progressively have more bounce as the loft increases?

I think I'd say, if you were coming to me, that you shouldn't "look" for that, but rather, you go through a fitting and see what shakes out as fitting you. Quite often people wouldn't choose the grind and sole type they end up with as the best fit.

Hard, if not impossible, to disagree with that.  However, after playing at a fairly high level for 50 years (3 to 12 hdcp.), I do know what I have seldom if ever seen and would like to "try" for a PW/GW type club with a thing sole and aggressive, leading edge and low bounce.  Even the best fitters (mine are James Leitz and David Marchand, LA) tend to have their preferences and a limited range of "try" options in stock.  If you can get James' attention and time, he can custom grind and build just about anything reasonably.  The great thing about James (Top 100 teacher and fitter) is that when you go to him for a custom fit, he gives you a golf lesson and a and a credit, too, if you buy.

This needs to be stressed a lot more, IMO.

My dad has a new putter that he bought "because I just really like the way it looks."  Seriously??  Come on.  Shouldn't you be buying clubs because "I just really like the way they help me get the ball in the hole faster?"

I can't wait for the day I have the disposable income to get some good fitted clubs. I would probably get wedges and a putter first then work from there. I'm not sure the price on these though so it may not really be that far out to get done. Only other thing that stops me from getting good wedges is just the horrible condition of the the bunkers locally. I would hate to get nice wedges only to have them torn up by bunker shots.

My wedges are currrently in Mesquite, TX!! Should arriving Thursday by the end of the day!!! Hopefully before my golf league that night, so I can bop over to the apartment and pick them up.
