Interesting that he mentions Tiger who happens to be one of the most athletic golfers in history and believes that physical limitations won't impact his daughters chances for success.

the whole statement makes me sick. it sounds like he predetermined how to make his daughters famous and is now driving them into it and somehow using their race to try to further their exposure.

so you can't complain that golf is racist because of cost and then admit that you're using race as a way to get your daughters more recognition.

In the article how many mentions of racism against his girls where there? Zero.  Are you going to find racist people in golf? You bet. You will also find them in hockey, baseball, football, softball, the PTA, church, the workplace, movie theatre, and so on.

His complaints are that most black folks don't have 40k to spend on golf. That has nothing to do with race. That has to do with only having an upper middle class income (middle class and poorer people don't have 40k so it is a non issue). What most of them do is find cheaper ways. You don't need a 11k simulator. You make due with a 1k net and video camera. You find a course that doesn't cost 800/month for a junior. You don't travel across the country playing youth events. You enter the local junior/senior amateur events. Sure you will not win a bunch of trophies but you will face tough competition on tough courses. And when you say there were only 2 black girls at the event, how many indians were there? How many native americans? Was it racism that keep them out? Probably not. More lack of opportunity. There is a huge difference.

And heck if this guy was at all dedicated to his kids success he would move to Florida or Southern CA and enjoy year round outside golf.

Based on the info I can glean from the story, this family lives in or near Hyde Park in Chicago which is a pretty well to do area. The closest public golf course is Jackson Park. According to the Chicago Park District website the week day rate for juniors is $16 and weekend is $24. BUT, they have a practice and play program the gives you unlimited range balls and unlimited golf for a whopping $30 a month http://www.cpdgolf.com/Chicago-Illinois-Players-Advantage-Card.html Not sure where they get $1560 a month

i mean i'm sure a poor white guy could just stroll onto any CC and play for free with house clubs

the moral of this story:

when you're kids are ultra competitive at sports it costs a lot of money. my little cousin did lacrosse (another sport that's had the elite tag put on it) and it costs a lot of money to do the whole travel thing and the equipment. baseball, basketball, football, etc. there's always a ton of money that can be dumped into supporting a child's sports habit.

and just like all these other sports there are more affordable ways to go about it.

yeah, after i looked at his statement a couple times I was thinking he mighta been saying that too...

Then why even mention the word "black" in the remark?  Why not just say most middle class families don't have 40k to spend on golf?  The whole

This whole thread is cracking me up.  I wonder if the father is really as stupid as he comes off in this article.  If so, I feel bad for his kids.  Golf is a sport that requires many acres of well manicured turf and high-tech equipment.  That stuff costs money.  There is no artificial cost being added here to keep a particular segment of the population out of the sport.

If golf is designed to keep black people out...maybe I should tell all the black men AND women playing at my home course that they aren't supposed to be playing, they can't afford it.

I actually commented on this the last round I played.  I was telling a friend that I see a lot more black people playing golf and think its awesome that they come out to play and don't let all of the stereotypes that get spewed over the years keep them from enjoying a game they are interested in.

This father is fishing for money...nothing more.  Why would a story about their successes be covered in so much "money talk"?

My philosophy on golf "We're not doing rocket science, here."

Maybe he should seek some sort of sponsorship if he hasn't already done that.  If the girls are truly gifted at the sport it would

seem likely that some corporate sponsor would kick in some financial support.  On the other hand, maybe they should think about

playing with less expensive gear and getting a club membership with unlimited golf.  Gymnastics is an expensive sport too but I didn't buy my daughter a $1000 leotard.

I'm trying to figure out exactly WHEN they have time to play practice rounds. They have won "over 300 tournaments" between them. I know that they play in the same tournaments some times because the article says they've finished 1st and 2nd. There's only 52 weeks in a year (and evidently Chicago only has 16 playable sundays) and they're pretty young. Now, I am NOT AT ALL slighting their abilities and I'm sure they are both great golfers, but......

I'm sure they could not accept any financial support from a sponsor without losing their amature status, but I would think that ANY golf club would be anxious to offer free membership to anyone with 300 tournament wins???

so he spends on golf what i make in a year and he is complaining about cost?  i dont complain about cost of equipment or a round, because i know it is expensive.  i knew it was expensive before i started and i dont see it getting any cheaper in the future.

people shouldnt complain about a sport they are willingly participating in.  it has nothing to do with race.  white black asian whatever., money is still green.  white people dont get a discount because we are white.
