I got some golf balls from titleist and they look like a pro v1 but on the side it says "test". It says on a paper inside that it is prototype and test blah blah blah. Just wondering if any of you have gotten one and what you think

I got the same. Red numbers, so probably the 2013 Pro V1x. I look forward to trying them out.

I got some last year. They came with a request to test them and complete instructions for reporting my results and impressions on-line. In a nutshell, I was asked to play the ball side by side my regular ball and compare all aspects. Distance off the tee and with irons. Spin, feel, putting, green holding, etc..... I played 2 rounds like that (mid-week, off time) and gave them my impressions as they compared to my normal pro v1. They were very careful not to give any clue as to what kind of prototype the ball was. I'm sure it could have been anything from a new pro v to a low spin distance ball. I found the balls I tested to be firmer than the pro v and maybe a little longer. Less spin around the green and not as soft off the putter face. I really wish I knew what it was after the fact, but of course that'll never happen. Kind of fun to think I could have played some small role in determining which version of a new ball to bring to market though.

Just got a set myself.  If you are part of "Team Titleist" from their website and answer surveys, you sometimes get test product.

I've played one round with them versus the ProV1.  Mine seem slightly bit different.  I noticed it sounds slightly different off my putter. Chipping was similar but launch was a bit lower off the tee with irons.  I need more time with them but it did not feel quite as soft as the ProV1.

As mentioned above, you have to be a member of "Team Titleist."  You sign up on Titleist's website.  Based on the info you provide to them in your profile, you get the updated version of your current ball (if you are randomly selected to test).  I play the ProV1x (love the new Hex Black though) and I received a sleeve of the prototype V1x's back in Sept/Oct 2010.  Just like the regular balls, the red numbers are ProV1x version and the black numbers are ProV1.

I kept one of my 3 balls without hitting it as a little souvenier.

Sent my review in.  Mine were just slightly different than the ProV1 and were not quite as soft feeling.  Very minor, but noticeable to me.  They seemed to launch a bit lower than the ProV1 too.

This may sound odd but the test balls I received smell much like the old balata balls. I opened another pack of ProV1's that I have and they do not have that smell.

Well I know what Titleist's balls smell like.

Anyway, It is probably that many people received different balls. I just noticed that as soon as I opened the package the smell was much like the old Titleist Balata smell.

The sleeve I recieved have black number 1's on them. They are also softer than my other Pro V1's I have. Part of me wonders if there isn't a possibility that Titleist has sent out a version that is a rollback ball just to see how it stacks up.

    • Day 11: did mirror work for a while. Worked on the same stuff.
    • I'm not sure you're calculating the number of strokes you would need to give correctly. The way I figure it, a 6.9 index golfer playing from tees that are rated 70.8/126 would have a course handicap of 6. A 20-index golfer playing from tees that are rated 64/106 would have a course handicap of 11. Therefore, based on the example above, assuming this is the same golf course and these index & slope numbers are based on the different tees, you should only have to give 5 strokes (or one stroke on the five most difficult holes if match play) not 6. Regardless, I get your point...the average golfer has no understanding of how the system works and trying to explain it to people, who haven't bothered to read the documentation provided by either the USGA or the R&A, is hopeless. In any case, I think the WHS as it currently is, does the best job possible of leveling the playing field and I think most golfers (obviously, based on the back & forth on this thread, not all golfers) at least comprehend that.
    • Day 115 12-5 Skills work tonight. Mostly just trying to be more aware of the shaft and where it's at. Hit foam golf balls.
    • Day 25 (5 Dec 25) - total rain day, worked on tempo and distance control.
    • Yes it's true in a large sample like a tournament a bunch of 20 handicaps shouldn't get 13 strokes more than you. One of them will have a day and win. But two on one, the 7 handicap is going to cover those 13 strokes the vast majority of the time. 20 handicaps are shit players. With super high variance and a very asymmetrical distribution of scores. Yes they shoot 85 every once in a while. But they shoot 110 way more often. A 7 handicap's equivalent is shooting 74 every once in a while but... 86 way more often?
