  1. 1. Did I break 80? (see below)

    • Yes, slap yourself on the back!
      7
    • No, put your nose back on the grind and appreciate where you are.
      33
    • Not sure how I feel about this.
      3
    • You suck because you can not put a full round together with this score!

So I now have a 79 via CI on my GHIN, and I didn't do it on purpose. I Shot a 39 today (with a 7 on the scorecard) and after I added it I did not realize it was going paired with a 40 I shot a week ago. I know I feel good about this but not 79 on 18 holes good. This score is not out of my realm obviously but there has not been a full round like this on the books. Opinion or answer the poll, should I be broke 80 happy or happy I am shooting in the high thirties on 9 holes happy?

I voted no ... but only because I felt like I should vote for something.  If this is the first time you've done it, it's an acheivement regardless.  The most important thing is you now know (if you didn't already) that a 79 is possible for you.

As far as if it's really an official 79 or not, I guess I would stick to my 'no' answer if you are the type of person who adds up your score after nine.  That type of person would be liable to know coming into 17 and 18 how close they are to 79 and perhaps 'choke' under the pressure of knowing.

On the other hand, if you are the type of person who pays no attention to score until all is said and done, then I'd probably lean towards a 'yes' vote.

Either way ... congrats on the "79" and on the 39 and keep it up!  (After you do it a 2nd, 3rd, and 4th time, it won't matter anymore anyway)

It's gotta be over 18 for it to "count."

Still, be happy you're coming off 39-40. Step in the right direction!

Well my phone automatically adds the score up and I am consistently turning the score off. I would prefer not to know but I usually know when I am doing well. That being said, I sunk a 17 foot heavy breaking putt for par on the last hole today. I shot another 39 earlier in the week and 37 earlier in the year. I was also -1 under until the 5th hole so I am not especially bothered by what my score is.

I also prefer to play 18, but with the current sun light conditions I am fortunate to finish 9. At least you voted lol.

See.

You are already on your way to not remembering that first "79" because you will do it often enough that it isn't a big deal anymore.

Lol... True, I suspect next season will bring rounds consistently in the 70's with 18 holes. I was close a few times this summer.

Afraid not. A round of golf is 18 holes. But congratulations on two nice back-to-back nines! :-)

Keep working at it.  If you are shooting in the high 30's regularly for 9 holes... It won't be long before you piece together an 18 hole round and break 80.  I say slap yourself on the back and get back out there and do it for real!

Well....you could say your last two 9-hole scores added up to a 79.

But I wouldn't say you've 'broken 80' yet, cuz you need to go thru the angst of trying to bring in the score down the stretch. You haven't done that yet. You gotta be 7 over on the 17th tee knowing you have the play the last two in even par...then do it.

I think it depends on if you played in between.  When the pros get rained out mid-round, they start where they left off and it counts as an 18 hole score when they finish.  OTOH, if you played 9 last Thursday, then played an 18 hole round over the weekend, today`s 9 may pair up for handicap purposes, but they are really separate 9 hole rounds.  Either way, you know you are capable of a round in the 70s.

One round was from 10/3 and the other was today's. I played 3 rounds of 18 in between the nines.  I didn't even know that the round from the 3rd was not linked yet, the way the GHIN works, the 9 hole rounds do not show unless linked to another nine.. If I continue to play conservatively a proper round in the 70's should be easy. I don't really give my self credit for breaking 80 with this one although it was cool to see. It will probably mess with my handicap though.

Ding ding ding..... This is exactly the difference between 2 separate 9 hole sides and a single full round of 18 holes. I recently posted about finally shooting my first even par round of 72, after 40 odd years of playing this silly game. Over those years, I've posted HUNDREDS of 9 hole sides, not just even, but under par. Putting two together is a whole different animal! :~(

I wrote this story a few months back to describe the mental gymnastics about trying to bring in a good score -

Sounds like a lot of hypocrisy and mumbo jumbo to me. If you didn't shoot 79, then why is it counted for your index? The same guys who say it doesn't count as a round will call you a sandbagger for not entering them. A couple years ago our computer paird up a couple 37's shot on our front 9 (much easier than the back 9) which were separated by two 83's played over the whole 18. 74? Seriously? I've never shot better than 76 at that course in all the years I've played there, so how is 74 an accurate representation of my potential?

That was exactly how I had my first  79 too...

It's maybe not a true 79 but definitely pat yourself on the back... and just know it's only a matter of time until you do it on 18 holes :)

74 is an accurate representation of you potential based on whatever the slope/rating of that 18 would be. Obviously if you play the front twice and the front is the easier 9 then the rating for it would be easier as well. So yeah... shooting a 74 by playing the front twice is easier than 74 over the whole 18, but that will be shown in the differential. While I wouldn't say that he shot 79, that's the way it has to be counted because 9 hole scores have to be combined to count, that's just the way it is.

As to the OP, I really wouldn't say that you broke 80, as I would say you'd have to do it in a single round for that but you should be happy you had a 9 in the 30s and by the sounds of it you are on your way to consistent rounds in the 70s.

The course in question does not have separate ratings and slopes for the front and back Most players there don't enter 9-hole rounds and the club is okay with it. When they start holding tournaments in 9-hole segments separated by several days, or even years with countless rounds sandwiched in between, then I'll call it my potential, but for now I'll just disagree and leave it at that since this is not my thread.
