Walking Vs Riding - GolfNow "Hot Deals"

I usually play 3-4x per week, and want to start walking. My issue is this, I don't belong to a club, and usually book my tee times using the GolfNow hot deals which include cart fees.  In my area, the "hot deals" are typically anywhere from $10-25 to play decent courses in the area if you are somewhat flexible with tee time.  Was thinking of getting a push cart and walking some rounds for 2013, but hard to justify $200 for a push cart (as opposed to other golf equipment I want) when I'm averaging about $15-20 to ride. Any thoughts around walking versus riding?  (I realize there are several threads around walking / push carts but see many responses from recent months).  Thanks!

You do not have to spend $200 on a push cart.  You can find them on craiglists/ebay ranging anywhere from $20+ and sometimes I see them for $10.  It may not be anything super fancy but it will allow you to push your clubs if that is what you wish to do.

If the course is full I prefer to walk because at least the pace of play won't seem so bad because I have to walk to my ball.  If I'm trying to get 36 in under 5 hours then it'll be the cart.

im 24 and debating whether or not to use a push cart instead of riding to get a little bit more exercise??? thoughts!

It really is a personal choice.  I prefer to walk because I enjoy the exercise and feel like I concentrate better when I walk.  But some people enjoy riding.  I say walk the course a time or two and see how it goes.  If you enjoy it you'll be getting a decent work out while playing golf at the same time.

$10-$25 for a decent course is a pretty good rate. For that rate, I wouldn't feel at all bad walking just because the cart was "included " in the rate. As others have said, you can find a decent push cart for a lot less than $200. If the course rents push carts, they may even be willing to give you a push cart instead of a riding cart for that rate.....

This. For rates that cheap, I would walk anyway. Just recently bought a clicgear and it was well worth the $200. Since getting it in June, I have played 36 holes a day, numerous 27 and even 5 days in a row last weekend without feeling too fatigued. At 44 and after carrying and walking the last few years, it makes a big differences in the way I feel at the end of a round. I'm not a big fan of riding and think they slow things down when not used properly.

When I book on golfnow I ride.  I prefer walking most of the time but a cart is nice sometimes too.

My suggestion would be to do whatever you feel like doing that day.

My wife bought my a Clicgear last father's day and I've walked ever since. At least for me I think it helps keeps my lower back from stifffening up during a round.

I agree with this. I walk 6 rounds a week and just as sure as I play with friends and use a cart I can add 5-10 strokes to the card. I focus when I walk. Plus it burn 1500 calories.

I recommend a carry bag. I use a light taylormade bag and just carry it like a back pack. No expensive gear to buy.

    • Okay, I'll give it a shot.  What the heck.  If you're a right-handed golfer, starting in your stance have your elbows close together, with the insides of the elbows facing up.  At the top of the back swing, your left wrist should be flat, and your right wrist should be cocked back.   That will help you tuck in your right elbow.  Then when you start down, keep your right elbow tucked in.  Don't flip the club with your right hand.  Keep your right wrist cocked back.  Try to have your elbows close together when you hit the ball.

    • Advanced statistics and analysis in baseball is a lot more prevalent than just the Oakland A's and  the movie, but yea, the book is how the public became aware of it for the most part. Every front office in every major sport uses analysis whether they're public about it or not, most with their own proprietary systems. Judging by your comments, I'm guessing you never studied statistical analysis or forecasting. No, you can't predict the future, but you can make decisions based on trends that are most likely indicative of future performance. It's a lot more effective than simply guessing or "going with your gut." For example, if a guy misses almost every cut in a tournament with bad weather and his next one has rain in the forecast, it's a pretty safe bet he's going to miss the cut. That doesn't mean he definitely will, but his past performance indicates that is the most likely outcome. I watched a program that talked about those daily fantasy gambling sites once and the top winners all use very complicated analysis tools to predict performance of athletes. They got into some really minute details like how an athlete performs under certain weather conditions, start times, etc. They're not just picking guys blind. Zero. Billy Beane himself said the playoffs are based on luck. Baseball has a playoff format that is different than regular season play so you can build a team that can win 100 games but isn't necessarily the strongest for a best-of-five or seven series. Even if it is, you can have a couple of guys hit a slump during the playoffs and lose anyway. The announcers made a big deal in the broadcast about how great Corey Kluber was in the month of September but then he faltered in the playoff series in October against the Yankees. They just assumed he was going to continue to be lights out, but he regressed to the mean. He's still one of the best pitchers in baseball, but if you combine his performances in September and October together, you're going to get a better picture of how he is as a pitcher than if you only evaluate his performance in the arbitrary month of September (or October, for that matter). How did they do before "analytics" was introduced? A poorly managed team is poorly managed, with or without additional stats to help make decisions.
    • That doesn't seem like it's necessarily a good thing- to unexpectedly fly over your target and land on the back of the green.  It doesn't seem like something you'd want to happen.  That seems like a shot you'd want to avoid.

Thx for the help. SG. Hi Bill,   Thx for the comments. Yes, working on my pivot helped. Either moving my shoulder/hips at the same time on the bs or just turn my chest. My ball striking has improved. However, I guess were always looking to improve more.  Agreed, comparing Nicklaus to the average hack wouldn't be a useful comparison. But, it's a common reply when someone brings this topic up.
