Best ball for the $

I hope this is not a question that gets asked all the time. I am new to the game, even newer to this forum, so please be forgiving.

My question is, which ball do you think is the best for the buck?  I'm sure there is a sweet spot there, but I have no idea myself. I'm sure everyone has their favorite, but is it the one you use day-in, day-out?

Is this agreed upon by most golfers, or is it a subject for hot debate?

It depends on what ball fits you.

I like a urethane cover for the greens and want a ball that gets up in the air with a little more spin and is good in the wind - so I go for the Callaway HEX Chrome.

I buy it on sales online - generally at a going out the door price of about $31/dz.

Your new to the game, i would play any of the three piece cheaper golf balls, three piece has more feel around the green than a two piece golf ball.

Bridgestone has one of the best selection of golf balls for a wide variety of playing ability

Callaway has some good mid to low price range golf balls

If your looking for premium golf ball, its really splitting hairs. I personally like Titleist Pro-V's, i use to hate them, but i really like them more for putting and short game shots than anything.

For me, i like Callaway, Bridgestone and Tileist brands the most.

Any good durable cover ball is ok for starting out, whatever you can get at a good value.  Find a few balls playing, get the feel for them that way too.   I have also had good results buying from a used golf ball place online.  Saves you money, on something you have a good chance of loosing or cart pathing anyway!

Bridgestone does make a fine product, even their lower end balls.  true.

I would say the mid-range balls. Used ones even, if you want to save more money. They don't feel like a rock on the clubface, but don't cost a fortune. I like the Bridgestone range.

I like e6's, especially when they are being blown out everywhere for $22.

If you are playing a course with a lot of water, buy cheap! There is something about water and golf balls, if it is there the ball will find it.

You are new to the game, buy the cheapest ball you can find with 70-80 compression. It absolutely does not matter what ball you play as a beginner. Now is the perfect time to experiment as you'll be buying a dozen every few rounds.

If you plan to get better, go online and look for the Top Flite Gamer V2's, you can find them for a buck a ball. They sold for $30-$40 just a couple of years ago. This is the cheap mans Pro V1. I play it in the winter as I lose a few balls per round due to balls pugging in the fairway or rough (pacific northwest). I get the same distance as Pro V, but slightley less spin. It's too bad they're discontinued. Buy as many as you can find...

Buy used AAAAA grade premium balls of your choice. Pro V's are approx $2 ball (give or take on how many you buy). just my $0.02

I like the E6 better than any of the 330 balls. Launches like a distance ball and feels good off the long clubs. My only gripe and it's a small one is not as good around the green as something like the PV1. I play this ball and there are times I hit the perfect chip and the ball is just dead with no action when it hits the green. But I feel all Bridgestone balls suffer from that, the 330 is a little stickier. Sucks because I feel more confident on the tee with the E6 and 330's. My longest drives this year were with the E6, long and straight.

For me, the best bang for buck ball is the Bridgestone E5.  Great spin and fairly inexpensive.

My wife bought 2 x 15 pack of Taylormade Burner golf balls for me as a joke (I told her that I wouldn't play a ball that came in a 15 pack!) and because they were in Wal Mart for 15 dollars. I figured what the heck and put them in play for the past 2 months and was pleasantly surprised.  They don't feel like a rock at impact, spin just fine, and distance is the same at any tour ball.  They are an excellent ball and they also play well in windy conditions and the feel off the putter is the exact same as I am accustomed to from a tour ball.  At that price point and performance level I will be playing them unless something just blows them out of the water. I don't play them more than 18 holes but then again who does play the same ball for much more than one round.

Wait - the Gamer is a decent non urethane ball but it did not sell for $30-40. It is, and has always been around $20.

There is no poor man's ProV1. That analogy does not work - Titleist Reps said that about the NXT Tour - they fibbed.

The Gamer V2 is a Gamer V2 - nothing more, nothing less. A nice ball without much greenside spin on partial shots, so account for rollout.

I was given a few by a friend and hit one on one hole. It felt too hard for me. I handed one to my wife to try without warning her and she said "ewwww.... too hard".:D

Thats funny because the E5 has a softer cover than the E6.  I guess it goes back to the old adage, "feel isnt real".  To me, the E6s feel harder than the E5s  The E6 is a great ball too but not enough spin for me.  Whereas the E5 stops within a few feet of my pitch mark, the E6 takes a few hops and just keeps on rolling, usually over the back of the green.
