Anyone into the greatest motorsport there is? I've been following for about 4 years now. Went to my first race this year, just a few weeks back at the USGP at Indy. Indianapolis is a great place to catch an F1 race, the city is so small you are bound to run into people. I got to meet my favorite racer, Robert Kubica. He was hanging out in the hotel lobby where I was staying.

Watching on TV is great, but seeing the cars run in person is probably a trazillion times better. They are SOOOOO loud, and fast, and powerful I can't really put it into words. When I got my first taste of them running live, the emotion I felt as they passed practically brought me to tears. You can feel the power rushing through you.

this year was my first year missing the race since 2003. Last year we camped out right across the street from the track. 50 bucks for the entire weekend plus 5 bucks per shower.

I can't wait to go back next year.

What's your team? Driver?

I'm a BMW guy, loving their performance in the last couple races. But I must say, this Lewis Hamilton is something else. I'd like to be a Ferrari fan, but everyone is a Ferrari fan. I've been following Spyker though, they use their engines. That's close enough.

I'm a huge F1 fan. I've been watching for years. I started when I was still in high school in the late 80s (man that was hard to keep track of F1 in the US back then). I was (and still am) a McClaren fan. Back then it was McHonda with Senna and Prost.

Now I'm a big Ferrari fan too so this season is a lot of fun for me.

Honda Fan all the way. So I like Button/Barrichello/Davidson/Sato. And even though I don't like the Ferrari team I'm a big Kimi fan.

You must be hating life this year. Well, with the exception of Takuma's point earlier in the season. That was a shocker! I'm not a big Honda factory team fan, but, I do like Super Aguri.

ahh good to know others enjoy F1. Its my fav sport and iv been following it since i can remember. Been on OK season so far, some great races and some really dull ones (though with currect aero rules this is a given). Nurburgring is next weekend, should be a cracker.

Been following F1 since Villeneuve moved from his Indy win to F1.

Sadly his biggest mistake was leaving Williams for $$$ at an unproven entity called BAR.

Now I am also getting quite into the MotoGP...how about others?

MotoGP is the Formula1 of Motorcycles, yes? I have a friend that's really into it. I watched a little bit of the race in Spain. Certainly exciting stuff! I guess the race at Laguna Seca is coming up, or maybe just recently passed? My friend went to check it out.

While on this subject, how do you guys like Speed TV's commentary?. I think it is very substandard. I have watched formula 1 from four different countries and I think this team is the worst knowledgeable about the subject they are dealing with. Peter Windsor is the only saving grace there.

I am a HUGE F1 fan. :)

My team is Ferrari so I have been pulling for Kimi and Massa... however I have been very impressed with Lewis Hamilton this year also. I can't stand Fernando Alonso though.

I love F1 and have been following it since the late 1970's when I was in high school. Yeah, I'm old. I like the SpeedTV coverage OK. Bob Varsha I've learned to tolerate, he's the weakest of the team I think. Steve Matchett is good, has some good insights into the workings of the teams since he spent a good deal of time at Benneton when Michael Schumacher was there. David Hobbs gives a nice ex-driver's point of view and for some crazy reason I kind of like british humor. Peter Windsor is top-notch too I think. I'm just happy we can even see F1 on TV here in the states. Thank god for SpeedTV. I love road racing and could watch any formula car series from Europe. I also like the touring car series. I wish they still had lots of British and German touring car racing like they did a few years ago. I also kind of miss the WRC coverage. Anything besides NASCAR is hard to sell in the american market. Bahhhh.

Yeah, what the hell happened to WRC on Speed? It wasn't on last season was it?

I like the Speed F1 team though. Granted it's the only one I've known. Who's the dude that says "here", "heeea" in his funny accent? That cracks me up every time. Haven't heard it recently though.

I'm also a huge F1 fan. I grew up as a Tyrrell fan (thought the six-wheeled P34 was the coolest car ever when I was a kid), but I'm more a fan of good racing than any specific team anymore. I'm really happy with Hamilton's performance so far this year. Man, that kid has skills and is a (seemingly) nice guy to boot. Kubica has shown great pace this year, and Vettel will hopefully get a solid chance at STR (unfortunately at Speed's expense). I guess if I had to pick one team, I like to root for BMW, as I've pulled for Sauber since they came over from sportscar racing.

I will also agree that F1 in person is awe-inspiring. Most recently, I got to see the 2004 GP of Europe at the Nurburgring and it was amazing (still V10s!).

Whao, you went to Nurburgring?! That's must have been something else just to be there, let alone the race. How were the crowds?

    • Nah, man. People have been testing clubs like this for decades at this point. Even 35 years. @M2R, are you AskGolfNut? If you're not, you seem to have fully bought into the cult or something. So many links to so many videos… Here's an issue, too: - A drop of 0.06 is a drop with a 90 MPH 7I having a ball speed of 117 and dropping it to 111.6, which is going to be nearly 15 yards, which is far more than what a "3% distance loss" indicates (and is even more than a 4.6% distance loss). - You're okay using a percentage with small numbers and saying "they're close" and "1.3 to 1.24 is only 4.6%," but then you excuse the massive 53% difference that going from 3% to 4.6% represents. That's a hell of an error! - That guy in the Elite video is swinging his 7I at 70 MPH. C'mon. My 5' tall daughter swings hers faster than that.
    • Yea but that is sort of my quandary, I sometimes see posts where people causally say this club is more forgiving, a little more forgiving, less forgiving, ad nauseum. But what the heck are they really quantifying? The proclamation of something as fact is not authoritative, even less so as I don't know what the basis for that statement is. For my entire golfing experience, I thought of forgiveness as how much distance front to back is lost hitting the face in non-optimal locations. Anything right or left is on me and delivery issues. But I also have to clarify that my experience is only with irons, I never got to the point of having any confidence or consistency with anything longer. I feel that is rather the point, as much as possible, to quantify the losses by trying to eliminate all the variables except the one you want to investigate. Or, I feel like we agree. Compared to the variables introduced by a golfer's delivery and the variables introduced by lie conditions, the losses from missing the optimal strike location might be so small as to almost be noise over a larger area than a pea.  In which case it seems that your objection is that the 0-3% area is being depicted as too large. Which I will address below. For statements that is absurd and true 100% sweet spot is tiny for all clubs. You will need to provide some objective data to back that up and also define what true 100% sweet spot is. If you mean the area where there are 0 losses, then yes. While true, I do not feel like a not practical or useful definition for what I would like to know. For strikes on irons away from the optimal location "in measurable and quantifiable results how many yards, or feet, does that translate into?"   In my opinion it ok to be dubious but I feel like we need people attempting this sort of data driven investigation. Even if they are wrong in some things at least they are moving the discussion forward. And he has been changing the maps and the way data is interpreted along the way. So, he admits to some of the ideas he started with as being wrong. It is not like we all have not been in that situation 😄 And in any case to proceed forward I feel will require supporting or refuting data. To which as I stated above, I do not have any experience in drivers so I cannot comment on that. But I would like to comment on irons as far as these heat maps. In a video by Elite Performance Golf Studios - The TRUTH About Forgiveness! Game Improvement vs Blade vs Players Distance SLOW SWING SPEED! and going back to ~12:50 will show the reference data for the Pro 241. I can use that to check AskGolfNut's heat map for the Pro 241: a 16mm heel, 5mm low produced a loss of efficiency from 1.3 down to 1.24 or ~4.6%. Looking at AskGolfNut's heatmap it predicts a loss of 3%. Is that good or bad? I do not know but given the possible variations I am going to say it is ok. That location is very close to where the head map goes to 4%, these are very small numbers, and rounding could be playing some part. But for sure I am going to say it is not absurd. Looking at one data point is absurd, but I am not going to spend time on more because IME people who are interested will do their own research and those not interested cannot be persuaded by any amount of data. However, the overall conclusion that I got from that video was that between the three clubs there is a difference in distance forgiveness, but it is not very much. Without some robot testing or something similar the human element in the testing makes it difficult to say is it 1 yard, or 2, or 3?
