How many here are guilty of ever hitting into anyone?

Last summer I saw a woman about my Mom's age being put into an ambulance with a HUGE gash in her forehead after being hit by an errant drive. She was seriously hurt. I've never hit into anyone on purpose and I wait until I know there isn't a chance. Without fail that once in a month rocket happens when people are just out of range. Heck I don't even tee my ball on a par 3 until the group ahead has made it to the next tee. I'm not consistent enough to know with certainly I won't blade a short iron right at them.

Never done it.  Being hit into isn't what a person deserves.  They may deserve some discourtesy of some kind, but hitting into somebody runs the risk of literally killing them.  Slow play doesn't warrant that type of risk.

I had the opportunity to hit into some slow players a couple weekends ago.  I was in my club tournament and had 240 to the pin on a par 5, behind a slow group that wasn't a part of the tournament.  My playing partners (who are all a bit older and shorter hitters), were questioning why I was waiting.  One half-heartedly said that if I think I can reach, I should wait.  I said that I could reach with a good swing, so I waited even though I knew they were growing impatient.  I could tell they were even more impatient as I waited for them to get in their carts and leave the vicinity of the green.

Luckily for me I hit one of the best shots of my life (not in terms of length, but in terms of accuracy) as I carried it to the green and actually hit the flagstick either on the fly or on one-hop.  As frustrated as I was by their slow play, though, hitting while they were still on the green never entered my mind.  We did speak to the marshal about it though.

Yes, I wanted to brag and tell that story.  So what?

agreed, not to mention a heck of a lot of fights on the course start this way.

does anyone feel like yelling "four" is like honking a horn...i.e. anyone can do it and no one who hears it really knows who it is directed at?  i feel like any time i hear "four" on the course i head for cover, even if it's a guy yelling it from 3 holes over.  they should invoke some kind of "four" rule whereby you also say the hole you're on.

I got one of those last Saturday right in the middle of my back swing. Funny thing was that I was on a tee box on a far corner of the course and no way anybody could have been directing it at me, but it was my natural reaction to flinch and mess up my shot.

BTW. I have never been able to stop a swing once my back swing has started, even when something distracts me. I see Tiger stop his swing all the time but once I start I don't think I could stop if I saw an airplane coming at me.

Who are you to say to someone you should not be allowed on a golf course, keep your opinions to yourself.. Especially stupid ones like that, we have all made mistakes and im sure you are no saint.

Yes, he was wrong. But no need to be so condesending about the whole thing, the guy obviously feels bad.

This has wound me up.. I apologise if I have read it in the wrong tone, but this has got to me.

This thread reminds me of the new Nike commercial where the guy drives the green, yells "sorry!", turns around and says "no I'm not!"

Do you at least agree that purposely hitting into somebody has no place in golf?

This actually reminds me of an issue I had at Doral (I think).  The course with the driveable 16th or 17th hole.  During three of the rounds, the pros would all tee off while the group ahead was on the green.  They would often land in the greenside bunkers while the group on the green was putting (you could see them lining up putts).  One round, the tees were way up and I guess basically everybody could reach the green, so they waited until the green cleared.  I wonder why they didn't wait every day?  It seemed like plenty of people could reach, and it seems dangerous to me considering the tee isn't visible from the green, therefore you can't really see the ball flying towards you if you're on the green...or can you?

Did you see Sergio hit his second on a par 5 last weekend at Tampa (I want to say it was on Saturday?) somewhere on the back 9?  Right after he 4-putted that one hole, and he was obviously steaming, he hit his second on the par 5, which bends pretty good to the right, and I guess he didn't fade his at all because he was in a bunker left of the green, but it was far enough that with a cut, he'd have reached ... and the group in front of him was still putting.  The announcer commented on it, and implied that it came close enough that the guys on the green might have noticed.

Oh 100%, if you are teeing up with the intent to injure someone then you certainly dont deserve to peg it up hahaha.

My point was the guy obviously didnt try to, and obviously feels bad about his mistake. We have all been silly at some point or another.

Lol i got something from the snack bar one time and she said you need anything else with that and I said yeah, your number.  (my uncle's home course 30 miles north of my hometown so I figured i had nothing to lose if i got shot down)  luckily she smiled and gave me her number, we started texting, and hung out a lot over last summer, and well we got pretty well acquainted

No, the guy did it precisely because he was ticked off at being held up.  So the intent was there.  And the ability was there.  Silly and stupid arent the same thing.

But then again, what the hell do I know?

That's not really fair.  The intent to hit his drive while they were still in range was there, yes, but not the intent to injure.  And silly and stupid do mean the same thing here.  We have all done stupid things at one point or another too.

I've gotten angry during a hockey game and punched a guy ... doesn't mean I wished that he would get hurt.  In fact, IMMEDIATELY after I did it, I wished I hadn't.  I kind of get the impression from OP that he felt the same.  As does RJF. :)

He told the story and asked if anybody else had ever done it.  I don't think that is really bragging.  He even said in his OP that he felt like a dick about it.

Brag? the only think i'm bragging about in this thread is the girl from the snackbar.  I admit it was an immature and dumb thing to do, but really if you're going to make these statements about me without knowing me and/or giving any kind of elaboration on why you feel the way you do, how much better of a individual are you than me.  I guess you're one of those people who have never made any mistakes in your life?  I did not have the intention of hurting anyone as stated from the beggining, I never thought I'd be able to reach them on the fly, I simply wanted to get them moving along, and get the point across that they're are other people playing the course too, and I now realize that was a very poor way of getting my point across.

Only once . .and it is a crazy story.

I was at a driving range in far Northern California.  Also practicing at the range were some members of a high school golf team.  This range is set up so the hitting area is on top of a hill and you hit down into this huge field that is bordered only by redwood trees ..ie . .no fence or anything around the range.  Well, this crazy dude comes walking out of the trees right onto the range and one of the high schoolers takes aim at him and fires away.  The crazy dude was almost 300 yards out and the high schooler missed him by a mile.  The crazy guy, though, starts making gestures at the golfers - waving arms and such - like egging them on to try and hit him . .so they all start hitting at him.  They're bombing away and he's dancing around, waving his arms in the air and giving the finger, etc .. nobody is coming close to him.

This went on for several minutes and then I decided . .well, if this guys not going to get off the range I'm going to keep practicing ..and I started to hit as well.  I also came nowhere near him as I can't hit that far . .but some part of me was aiming at him . .I have to admit . .like trying to hit the ball collector cart.

This all went on for probably 10 minutes and then the course pro noticed what was going on, made everybody stop hitting and then went down there in a golf cart and chased the guy away.

I accidentally hit into someone about twice a year. It's usually when someone on a parallel hole has hooked or sliced a drive onto the edge of our fairway, and the cart comes out of the trees right about the time I hit the ball.

Or, if some nimrod putts out on the green, replaces the flag, and then walks backward along the water hazard looking for lost balls while his pals drive to the next tee.

    • I have been debating getting a launch monitor of some sort, if only so I can re-figure my shot zones (I haven't actually mapped them in years) and also to practice distance wedges at home.  I have to see if this works with either my current setup, or what my setup would be if I move it to the garage.
    • Day 48, June 23.  After work today, I took 25 minutes in my practice room;  6-iron, same everything as yesterday except the time and count.
    • Well, this is interesting.  I think we discovered a few months ago that I haven't been following professional golf in a while (my confusion about Scotty's footwork confirmed that), so at least as I aim to follow a bit more I'll get something new to learn with all of you.  My very quick read of Erik's summary makes me think this new Challenger series fits somewhere between Korn Ferry and the Championship (not Champions, but I know I'm going to make that mistake a few times if I'm not careful!).   My recollection is that there were already second-tier events among the PGA Tour;  the Bob Hope didn't have the same quality of field as the event at Riviera (whose current name I forget, although now that I say that, I realize the Palm Springs event hasn't been called the Bob Hope in a few years either).   With the absence of the FedEx (if I'm reading that correctly), does that mean no more FedEx Cup at all? Hopefully I'll have time later in 2026 to sit down and see what we're in for in 2027, where one of my goals already is to follow more professional golf.
    • The highlights as I see them: Championship and Challenger Series The creation of the PGA Tour and the PGB Tour, in the words of Joel Dahmen a few years ago. They're calling them the Championship Series (23-24 events) and the Challenger Series (20+ events). Both run February to August. They feel this will achieve three things: increasing the consistency and quality of fields across the season creating a clear system for players to earn and retain status and delivering a more structured and competitive experience for fans and partners—all in an effort to strengthen meritocracy. Championship Series Structure and Eligibility The 23-24 events includes the Players, majors, season-ending events, and the Presidents Cup and Ryder Cup. These will be 72-hole events with a 36-hole cut to the top 65 and ties and purses of $20M+. 120 players without an alternate list. 90 players (roughly) from the previous year and 20 players promoted from the Challenger Series. Full eligibility will be finalized later this year. Sites (cities) to be finalized soon, but 10 of the 15 courses have already been determined. Postseason: includes retention and relegation and concludes with match play. The Tour Championship will also be played across a rotation of prestigious courses. Challenger Series Structure and Eligibility 20+ events. Running concurrently. Will feature players fighting their way back to the Championship Series or players graduating and on the upswing from the Korn Ferry Tour. Many of these events will be current PGA Tour courses. About 7 of the Challenger Series events will be during off weeks for the Championship Series with elevated purses and visibility. Purses of at least $4M, with cuts similar to the Champ series. 144 player fields. Competitive Fields for Both Series Players will be eligible for only one series at a time: Championship Series Players are not eligible for Challenger Series events. Championship Series members will have a known schedule with all events having the same eligibility. Players and Majors will have their own eligibility criteria. Championship Series players don't have to play all events. This begs the question about, say, the Canadian Open, and other "home-town" events that players might want to play, even if they're Challenger Series events. Will releases be granted? Promotion and Relegation At least 90 players will be retained in the Championship Series, and 20 players will be promoted from the Challenger Series each year. Battlefield promotion for two-time winners from the Challenger Series. Players relegated from the Championship Series will have a "last chance" opportunity to retain status, or will go to the Challenger Series. Criteria will be finalized before the start of the 2027 season. Points System New points system (not FedExCup points). Separate points systems for the Championship and Challenger Series. Elevated points in the Challenger Series for off-weeks on the Championship Series. More details tk. Elevated International Events in the Fall The fall schedule will include a limited series of elevated international events with top players from the Championship Series, with the intent to deliver in partnership with the DP World Tour as part of the Strategic Alliance. Last Chance Series The Tour will develop a “last chance” series of 4-6 events in the fall, with a limited number of spots on the Championship Series available for top finishers. Eligibility will include players relegated from the Championship Series, Challenger Series players, and other categories to be determined. Q-School continues, as do the Korn Ferry Tour and PGA Tour Latinoamerica. Also, Brian Rolapp is the new commissioner as of January 1, 2027.
