Can someone explain how this point system works? Does it give extra points for wins, appearances, Major appearances, standings in a tourney or what.

I fail to see why Tiger is still #1 in points when he hardly plays week to week, while Vijay and Furyk battled on Sunday and consistently play in tournaments while Tiger picks and chooses. He hasn't won since Charlotte this year and has no major wins in '07. What is up with that?

New Slogan for the PGA Tour in 2008:

"These guys are good....but we all know that you only watch if Tiger is playing."

He's the leading money winner. The FedExCup points are practically the same as the money list.

Tiger's at the top because he WINS or otherwise PLAYS WELL when he does play.

The answer is 'yes' to almost all of your questions. Tiger has 3 wins and always makes the cut and contends. 2 second place finishes in majors. Those other guys you mentioned (Vijay and Furyk) haven't won a major either and have as many wins as Tiger does combined. The PGA tour isn't padding his total to keep him #1 , he's earned them, even if he hasn't been quite "on" as much this year. Just shows how good he really is.

it's a matter of points earned...he averages more points per tournament played than anyone else. Winning vs. 2nd place definitely gives you more points, it's usually doubled. So, Vijay lost over 2000 potential points by finishing 2nd last week instead of 1st.
