Hello I started golf 2 years ago and until may this year played it as a hobby along side rugby. Got a shift job stopped rugby now just focusing on golf. I 99% of the time strike the ball clean can hit a 3 wood 300 yards put half decent yet I am struggling to improve. For example I could play 5 holes 3 over par then have 2 double or triple bogie then another par. I have booked myself my first lesson for wednesday to try and get some things to work on but personally I think its mainly due to lack of putting in hours at the range. cheers for any replies

300 yard 3w means no need for a driver. Give up Rugby to avoid any injuries to your golf swing!

To improve, you must work on swing fundamentals and not just pound balls at re range. So do research, take lessons, whatever. Don't just hits balls because I can guarantee you will be ingraining bad habits. This site has lots of info on 5 simple keys to a good swing. Learn them. Video yourself and be critical. Post your swing here. Be tough on yourself and don't be oblivious thinking that your swing is natural so it must be good. I spent years thinking my "natural swing" was fine. Turns out I had a terrible over the top motion that still haunts me. I could've saved time if I had been more critical of my own swing. Good luck!

you have to figure out what is causing those doubles, is it a bad drive or i it a loss of focus on all shots.

also every one goes through that period where they plateu and it sucks,

i was tracking along nicely then when i got to a 9 handicap i stayed there for 2 months

made some swing changes and worked on short game now im almost scratch!

Yeah I'm gonna call bs on the 300 yard 3 wood.  lol  Show everyone a video if you really believe that's what you hit.

why does everyone think its so hard to hit the ball far, alittle practice and yall can too

I remember reading the average tour player drive is 280.  That's 280 with a driver and you're telling me some newbie is hitting further than that with an even smaller club?  I'm not saying it can't be done but you're gonna have to show me before I believe it.

I still think these are the same guy with different identities posting the same thing over and over again.  Is it possible? yay, probably (the distance claim),  Do I care?  Hell No.

Just because someone is pro dosnt mean they can get alot of distance...280 is nothing yet that it the average... How do you think that works out... I'm 14 and hit it 270-280

I am gonna have to agree in have a 3 wood swing speed at about 107 and I hit mine about 250 260 on the screws so 300 I would li e to see it. I would say he plays with a lot of wind at his back and off a 50 ft cliff. Not saying its impossible but very unlikely.

He probably dosnt hit it that far(plus range balls never go far) I'm guessing he gets good ball speed which is what makes a rangeball seem to go for He's maye in 270-280 range and I know plenty of people who hit it there

It wasn't the 300 yard part that automatically made me think NO, it was the 99% part (combined with the 20+ HC).

As far as 280 for the average pro- 280 ranks 152 out of 185 PGA Tour pros with enough rounds to qualify.  The shortest is Mike Weir with a 270.5 average.  This is based on 2 measured tee shots per round and may include holes they did not hit driver, hit a tree, into the wind, landed in the rough and got no roll, mishit the shot, etc. http://www.pgatour.com/stats/stat.101.html

If you look at all drives with shot link, the average is lower because it includes more holes where they don't actually hit driver.  If you just look at longest drives (like most amateurs remember) there are 999 drives 346+ yards in 2013 with Phil having the longest this year at 450 yards.

    • Just add new stats of speed of play to the tour. Average time to hit a shot Number of shots per round the player took more than 40 seconds to play a shot Number of times under the clock Numbers of warnings per round for slow play Number of penalty strokes per round for slow play  Number of times the player took a WC break. Time spend on the WC  Number of times the player don't know basic rules and have to call for a rules official  Walking average speed Time spend reading yardage books Time spend arguing with the caddie about hitting an impossible shot.  Average time looking for a ball beyond 3 minutes.  Average time looking for balls on the hazards despite been in the middle of the fairway An a lot more that can give the committee enough information to award penalties after a round, tournament or even a season. Imagine a ruling were a player is awarded to play all April with 1 shot penalty each round because of slow play in March, should be a shit show I would love to see.
    • I agree. I like the Mission Impossible movies. None of them are life changing or movies that I would put in any kind of a top ten list. But they are pretty much always keep me entertained.
    • Might be good. Part 1 was only okay.
