Welp, with the new baby and MN weather I haven't been golfing too much. However when I do I feel contact is fairly consistent. At least way more consistent than I used to feel (aside from driver that is). I hadn't filmed myself in a long time so I decided to pull out the camera today and get a crappy quick shot of a couple 8 irons (i think)....I was hoping for a major improvement. Ughhh, the swing still looks really ugly. Still have a lot of work to do before the snow melts.

I'll hopefully be getting more better quality videos up here in the next couple weeks.

I know it's a bad angle and video, but if you see anything that needs major fixing, please let me know.

edit: btw I think I hit too much behind the ball sometimes.

Looks like too much knee flex and the weight is back towards the heels. This causes a balance issue and partially the reason why the head goes too far forward on the downswing. Try this at home

- Stand with your heels 4 inches away from a wall.

- Bend from the waist until your butt touches the wall. That's as far behind you as the tailbone is going to go.

- Let the head hang, eyes down.

Then turn both feet out about 25-30 degrees each. Will help with a couple pivot things.

Thanks Mvmac! I'll work on that at home.

It seems like knee flex continues to be a major bane. I honesty feel like I'm not flexing at all until I see the video.

I've been keeping a keen eye on the pros lately and it seems like everyone has very little knee flex....everyone except Keegan Bradley. How does he get away with it?

Weight distribution is still a factor as well. The weight shift and timing needs a lot of work.

Once again, thanks!

Ok, I'm trying this right now. Getting the feel for it. Should I start making a couple swings? And if I do swing, should my butt always be touching the wall?

Also you mentioned my feet are too far on my heels. Should it feel as if all my weight and pressure is in my toes?

I think Mike wanted to just get you in the right position and not a matter of taking swings with your butt on the wall.. The best thing to do is practice this for a bit and even tape your self to see your posture with the wall behind you, and then go ahead and take your normal posture away from the wall and see if you are able to get into that position naturally. Yes you should feel more weight towards the middle and front of your foot! Not the heels.

Sounds good, thanks Abu!

I'll work on this some more right now and then head to the indoor facility. Won't be able to film today but at least I'll get a feel for it.

I think you tend to over-flex because the weight gets back into the heels, it's a way for you to balance yourself. Eyes down, feel like the weight is on your toes and I think the picture will be much better.

Yes Keegan has more flex than most players but the weight distribution is still balanced and his eyes are down. He compensates by having more forward bend than most players, chest is more "over" his toes. Not saying this is what you should do, just answering your question.

I hit a lot of shots yesterday with my weight mainly in the toes, it went ok for awhile. I don't think my back/upper body was in a proper position though because my lower back started to get pretty sore. I think I was possibly over-exaggerting the stance and getting too forward....or maybe I'm just not used to it. No idea. Eventually I started getting the yips (lots hitting off the toe) and I completely lost clubface control so I stopped.

When I go back I'll definitely try and get video to figure out what I did wrong.

I believe I was getting into the position at 55 seconds.

Strongly disagree with the Pederson video in regards to the upper back

At least he gets the hips (whether to be in lots of anterior or posterior tilt) mostly right.

  • 1 month later...

I feel like my swing is getting worse and worse, more and more off plane. Here's some video of where I'm at right now. At 30 seconds in I go left handed, I've been experimenting with the left because I played baseball/hockey left handed...and I just wasn't feeling comfortable right handed even after playing for a year. So this is now the 3rd time hitting left handed clubs.

1min 25 seconds in I get a side view but it wasn't a proper one because of the way those red little walls were setup. I would have gotten a side view of me left handed but I was too lazy to bring the camera over the other side and try to get myself in there.

Anyway, any help/advice/thoughts are major for me. My short game has to save me on every single hole right now.

About 6' even. Do both 6 irons look small?

I guess it's just how you set up. I thought you might be taller. Yea the ball is to close. Left Hand should be closer to being under your chin.

Ahhh, I put the ball too close to me? I remember reading something where a pro said that most amateurs play the ball too far away. So I figured I'd bring it in haha.

Camera angle will make it look like it goes more inward but you're rolling the forearms, clubhead inside too much

And that causes you to steepen it too much on the downswing.

So here's what I recommend you do

If you make a fist with your thumb sticking out, that's about how far the butt of the club should be from you, if you hold your fist against your belly.

    • It’s winter here and time hitting at my indoor place.  This year I bought and sold a few sets so I didn’t settle in on anything. For this coming season, starting now I have a choice to make.  What set would you guys use? 1.  Nike Vapor Pro irons - They are like new, hit them some last year before I had to demo other sets.  I love them, original grips, barely used so I’m almost not wanting to use them to keep their value up.  Standard LLL and standard grips. 2. Taylormade P7TW irons - Still in the box.  Got them over a year ago but had too much to hit, never used them.  Have used a set in the past and loved them.  Ended up with my own set custom fit to me -1/4”, 1 degree flat midsize grips.  These are probably not as valuable because they are still available and they are fit to me. I hate to put the Nikes away but it makes more sense to save them than the TW’s…. I dunno….
    • Day 215 (3 Dec 24) - Another very chilly day - opted to work on easy pitches in the backyard. Worked thru the irons and wedges - focused on foot position and tempo.
