My boss is convinced they edit in the "Get in the hole!" scream on broadcast because back when he worked for the golf channel and got free tickets to the bay hill every year, he never once heard anyone scream it :P

I love to yell it - it shows the other patrons that you're fully commited to supporting the players. There should be more yelling - during the shots too. People should be able to wave their hands when the shadow is on the player's ball and also distract them while putting - just like when a visiting player is taking a free throw against the Utah Jazz. It's supposed to be a sport you know!?!?! Actually, I'm not a huge fan of any loud "cheering" on a golf course since there's always another group somewhere, not too far away, with somebody in mid-swing.

It was a bit of fun on the local course when this popular guy off a very high handicap, and doesn't take golf seriously, just a bit of fun, completely snap-hooked his drive, and my friend shouted it.

That's the only time I ever say it, usually to a friend, and right he hits it into a water hazard.

Man, the people who yell this at tournaments deserve a swift punch to the throat. It is the only thing I hate about watching golf on tv.

Jeez, it's not like they're saying "get out of the hole" or something. Obviously it's overused and incredibly cheesy, but it's not a big deal, it's a show of support.

um...i do...as loud as possible. all the time. passing cars? do it. old ladies on the street walking by? do it. church, mid-sermon? do it. a gopher in the woods? do it. a baby's birth? no wait...no not then.

...but seriously, not on a golf course.

People in the know will yell "BOOM!" and "POW!" off the tee. It's like a secret handshake to show our affiliation with TST.

I try to do it mid-swing...with my feathered hair flowing. I have a Jack Hamm tour bag...it's worth a billion dollars and has Zolex zippers and a strap that fits every carrying style.

And this was the Masters too. Relatively tame compared to a normal tournament. Or, say, the WM Open at TPC Scottsdale.

Yeah i don't like it, really only at the pheonix open should it be yelled, when you have 5+ beers, and people get booed for missing the green.

When i am on a par three and it looks good, i should start yelling it.. Maybe, when i hit a huge monsterous pull off the green, "GET IN THE BUNKER"

Who yells "Get in the hole"? Morons, imbeciles, and idiots. As defined by Wechsler in pyschological studies, people with an IQ below 20 are idiots, between 20 and 50 are imbeciles, and 50-70 are morons. According to IQ distributions, 2.14% of the population has an IQ below 70. If one assumes that there are about 25,000 spectators at a golf event on a particular day, this means that over 530 people on the course fall into that category, or about 30 per hole. With that many morons, imbeciles, and idiots standing watching a tee shot, it's a wonder that we don't hear this incredibly annoying blabbering cry for self-recognition more often!

I haven't watched golf on TV for quite a few years but I did watch The Masters last week. What's up with those fans who scream "Get In The Hole" ? Most people cheer when a putt drops, or say 'awww' when it just misses, but then there are those people who are screaming at the ball while it is in motion.

Agreed. All I hear at my local club at the tee box is stuff like "ah crap, is that OB?" and stuff like that.

What if you yell it after your own shots?

    • So excited you made it out! I live in Portland and go most springs. If you liked Sheep's Ranch you ain't seen nothing yet. It's incredibly picturesque and with a 2 club wind it's not a cake walk. But as far as the quality of the course in terms of challenge and interest, in my opinion it's easily the worst on the property! Also, Old Mac started as my least favorite (this was before Sheep's Ranch opened). But I listened to the fried egg podcast about it and read through Doak's descriptions and it totally changed my perspective. Now it's fighting for top spot. So excited for you!
