Here's a picture:

Note the empty quote in @saevel25 's post. It's empty because the poster above him (in this case @RPMPIRE but a lot of people have done this) submitted a malformed post.

What's malformed? Notice that his indent level is the same as the quote.

This makes Huddler think that the text he typed is quoted text from someone else, and as such, it's not quoted by @saevel25 because the software thinks it's not @RPMPIRE 's text.

If you find yourself typing on this "indented" level you've screwed up. :-D It's okay. Stuff happens.

But please fix it before you submit the text, because if we see malformed posts that take more than a few seconds to fix, we'll delete them instead. If you don't know the HTML (and don't want to mess with "Source" mode), then discard your draft and re-quote posts and try again.

TL;DR: if you're typing new text and it's indented, you're screwing up and we ask that you fix this before proceeding.

Thank you.

How does it get indented?  And only my Mother gets to call me malformed!

So I'm quoting here and it wasn't automatically indented, but I did notice it doing it before. I didn't think it was a big deal, but I'll double check next time. My apologies.

There are a few ways. Sometimes you screw up, sometimes the Rich Text Editor screws up (or does something you wouldn't predict).

I had the indent size increased by 25 pixels two weeks ago to try to curb this behavior. It seems to have helped but it has not eradicated it.

And this is just a public service announcement, really. I'm not trying to blame anyone, especially you @RPMPIRE - I'm just putting this out there so that if you (anyone) see your text indented, you can fix it. That way we won't have to delete it.

And as a slight "defense" of @RPMPIRE , and I suppose, consequently, a slight "offense" towards @saevel25 (stress the word "slight ;)) ... it does show up as blank in the editor box.  It's happened to me a few times, and I notice it, and so I manually add the text using copy and paste.

Perhaps this bit of good-samaritanism will get me off the hook for a few future double posts?  Hmmm, @iacas ??  P.S. ... Bam!

That's the problem: it shows up as blank when poster B quotes poster A because the site doesn't see that text as part of poster A's post. It's indented, and the site sees it as text that poster A quoted himself.

Would someone please point me someplace where I they demonstrate how to go about fixing this?

I just did it for one of my posts and it took like 15 minutes, haha.

There are two ways to fix it.

  1. Know and understand enough HTML to fix it that way.
  2. Don't get caught typing indented text in the first place.

It's basically that simple. If you post above a quote, often, you're still "inside" the quote "div" so you're indented.

Ahh, I think this is what I'm doing when I'm doing it incorrectly.

Thanks!

So if I want to post above the quote box how do I get my stuff to not be indented?  I have tried left-arrowing to try to get in front of the indent but it doesn't work.  Is there another way to do it?  Preferably one that doesn't involve learning html?

But then again, what the hell do I know?

See this screenshot:

You don't have to know any HTML. You just have to type text before anything else and it'll appear first. When you switch out of Source mode it'll wrap it in

tags and "HTML-ize" it for you.

Good question.

P.S. This is with the expanded editing tools. If you're using the BBCode editor, you just put your own text before the first [quote] tag. That's default on mobile phones, but you can always switch to it before you quote on the desktop and you'll get the BBCode editor.

Oh this all helps a ton.  I was usually able to fix the indents but trying a bunch of random things, but I could never figure out why it was happening.

Yeah, for those that know HTML a bit…

That stuff is what indents it (class="quote-container"). This stuff is what puts the "box" around it with the little "post/arrow" icon:

FWIW I found a workaround that doesn't require any html.  I just put a few blank (full length) lines after the quote, and then cut and paste the quote below one of hose blank lines and voila.

But IAC, thanks for the answer.

That's all I do too but it doesn't work for text before the first quote.

    • For such a nice membership, there have been some bad incidents in the past few years.  We had someone voted out a couple of years ago over something he did and he harassed the board members for three months until he moved out of the area.   Generally they’ve tried to do things like tournament handicaps and identify certain people who they know should be lower and adjust it somehow.  I can understand not wanting to go thru something like the guy who was voted out again i emailed the pro who forwarded it to the handicap committee.  They are going to see what can be done.  I walked someone thru what happened and they are going to nudge him to post the score from the match and see what he does.  Since he didn’t put anything in the electronic scoring past 13, based on how he played 14 and 15 plus having to take bogey on 16-18 for after he left, he should post 83.  We’ll see if it’s even higher,   Since he was really even thru 13, then doubled 14 and parred 15 my guess is he really shot 75 being generous and giving him 2 pars and a bogey on the three holes he didn’t play.    i shot 88, getting 16 shots for my course handicap which is net even and I lost on 13.  We do brackets where handicaps should be within 4-5 of each other.  Most matches only have 1-2 shots as a difference between players  neither of us posted the score yet.  There was something in the match play rules about whether or not to post your score.  I couldn’t remember if we were supposed to or not.  I don’t think he was going to post that, because even with his inflated score it would be the lowest score in his recent 20. Lucky I didn’t because they want to see what he does post and they don’t want me posting so he can try to calibrate his score.
