I'm a high handicapper who hits a 3 wood off the tee instead of a driver.  Looking for a new one.  Any suggestions?  Thanks in advance.

If you want a 3 wood that is purely going to be used off the tee you may want to look at the Xhot 3 deep. Or the ping karsten. Also don't rule out the possibility of a 12 or higher degree driver. As Tom Wishon has said having an accuracy driver is not a bad idea. I know that the sldr will be offered in 14 degrees of loft which could be perfect... Let me know if I can help any further

What do you currently hit? What are you looking for in a new 3 wood? More distance, more accuracy, easier to hit off the deck? A little more information will provide you with much better responses. As it stands, you'll probably get 50 guys telling you the 3 wood they have is the best ever, and you should get one too, without any idea whether it's a good fit for your or not.

Good advice - thanks.  I'm still new to this.  Right now I'm using a Callaway XHot with a graphite shaft.  I love the club, but I'm just looking for more distance.  I've never been long; I only get about 200-210 off the tee.

The callaway x hots are one of the longest 3 woods out there. Make sure you test clubs though because you may get different results. Most likely to get more distance you should decrease loft.

Under the circumstances, it seems to me a much better investment. The 3 wood is has now it already a very good one, so "upgrading" likely won't give him an appreciable gain in distance. Taking lessons and improving the swing will not only allow him to use the driver (and thereby gain distance) but also improve his game all around.  If it were me, I would stick with the X Hot (it really is a great 3 wood, I'm thinking about picking one up), take a few lessons, and start booming it with the driver.

I have the 3 deep myself and that thing just bombs it. I'm with you. The 3 wood is fine. As much as I love new clubs I think as a high handicapper maybe 1 year of "advancements" won't make almost any difference in your scoring.

From what I hear, the Xhot is one of the longest out there...literally and ball distance. Maybe get a lesson or two, or work on creating more lag if you are at that level.

Ever try a higher loft driver, 12*-14* or more played at shorter lengths?

Nice club, I liked it enough to re-arrange my set around it, including the wedges to make room for it.  I use it on tight driving holes and it is like cheating out of the fairway.

Looks like something that would help my game since I hit fairway woods very well but have always been hot and cold with a driver. I may save a little money up and try it.

Do you know the overall club length and/or grip size and weight?

I have tried all the newer models of 5-woods on the market today. The longest and straightest for me was Taylormade's JetSpeed. 250 carry with 5-wood, which is a lot for me.

There's no bad advice here ^ I too couldn't hit a driver for years, then after a bit of research I had a 12* loft driver made at 44.5 and I've never looked back! Keep the 3 wood! And get an easy driver!

      I am semi-loyal. Usually buy four dozen of one ball and only play that until out and then determine whether to continue or try another one. Since starting my semi-loyal path to success, I've been playing the below, not in order: ProV1 ProV1x ProV1x left dash AVX Bridgestone BXS Srixon Z-star XV I am not sure if it has helped anything, but it gives a bit of confidence knowing that it at least is not the ball (while using the same one) that gives different results so one thing less to mind about I guess. On the level that I am, not sure whether it makes much difference but will continue since I have to play something so might as well go with the same ball for a number of rounds. Edit: favorite is probably the BXS followed by ProV1/Srixon Z-star XV. Haven't got any numbers to back it up but just by feel.

      In terms of ball striking, not really. Ball striking being how good you are at hitting the center of the clubface with the swing path you want and the loft you want to present at impact.  In terms of getting better launch conditions for the current swing you have, it is debatable.  It depends on how you swing and what your current launch conditions are at. These are fine tuning mechanisms not significant changes. They might not even be the correct fine tuning you need. I would go spend the $100 to $150 dollars in getting a club fitting over potentially wasting money on changes that ChatGPT gave you.  New grips are important. Yes, it can affect swing weight, but it is personal preference. Swing weight is just one component.  Overall weight effects the feel. The type of golf shaft effects the feel of the club in the swing. Swing weight effects the feel. You can add so much extra weight to get the swing weight correct and it will feel completely different because the total weight went up. Imagine swinging a 5lb stick versus a 15lb stick. They could be balanced the same (swing weight), but one will take substantially more effort to move.  I would almost say swing weight is an old school way of fitting clubs. Now, with launch monitors, you could just fit the golfer. You could have two golfers with the same swing speed that want completely different swing weight. It is just personal preference. You can only tell that by swinging a golf club.

      Thanks for the comments. I fully understand that these changes won't make any big difference compared to getting a flawless swing but looking to give myself the best chance of success at where I am and hopefully lessons will improve the swing along the way. Can these changes make minor improvements to ball striking and misses then that's fine. From what I understood about changing the grips, which is to avoid them slipping in warm and humid conditions, is that it will affect the swing weight since midsize are heavier than regular and so therefore adding weight to the club head would be required to avoid a change of feel in the club compared to before?

      I think part of it is there hasn't been enough conclusive studies specific to golf regarding block studies. Maybe the full swing, you can't study it because it is too complicated and to some degree it will fall into variable or random.
