I use this, and it's what got me to 8.8. I don't do the pump thing, but instead I turn more at the top and get the full shoulder rotation I'd get with a full backswing. But it makes for great contact.

Spectrums,

You actually use this on the course?

How long did it take to trust the move enough to go from range to course?

Posted
I tried this out today at the range and for some of my iron shots on 9 holes today. It does look ridiculous, but it also has improved my contact a little. I'm going to keep trying it out and see what happens.

This seems okay for mid and short irons where you swing down more. Longer clubs, especially woods and the driver that require a sweeping impact will cause problems with tempo. It will take a lot of practice with this swing to get the same tempo for all your clubs.

This swing is rediculous. Maybe if youre a hacker and dont care about getting better, itll be ok. For somebody who wants to go somewhere in golf, youd never think about a stupid swing like this. You cant work the ball, you have no tempo, youre rythme is just aloof. Stupid idea and the fact that a magazine made an article about this proves that we've just about run out of material for golf magazines. In 10yrs youll probably see this trick regurgitated 5 times over.

I had an instructor use this as a drill last year. Very hard to get used to. I'm going to try it on the range again, if it EVER stops raining here in Wisconsin.

Spectrums,

About two practice sessions. Remember, I changed a bit of it around so I don't look retarted. But the mechanics are the same. I've been hitting it farther since.

It sounds like you do not stop at 3/4, if I read your original post correctly. What are you trying to feel on your back swing that let's you know you are doing what you intend?

Huh, I thought looking retarded was the real selling point of the system.

It's not a true "stop", but at the 3/4 point, I turn my shoulders in more, sort of like the S&T move at the top.

When I first started playing I had a quick tempo and had trouble with good consistant contact. I then saw someone with a slow take away and decided to adopt it. Since then my game has improved alot. My take away and whole back swing is super slow. When I get to the top I unload and make great contact. I find that when I make poor contact my backswing was too quick. Mind you my handicap is still in the 20's, but i was in the 30's last year.

Well, took the family to a par 3 today. Didn't try the no backswing on the shorter holes, but on 2 longer holes ( 7 iron, 5 iron ) I did it and the ball went dead straight. Also, I felt very confident after using it on practice swings. Just seemed to get that position pre-loaded in my head.

So has anyone tried this out and continue to do it today? Has it improved your ball-striking and if so, how? (For example, were you a pull hitter and now hit less pulls or were you a short hitter that now gets some distance?)

I agree with R_M.

many of these ideas are great for amateurs who don't have time to practice as often as a pro and therefore not necessarily debunked that no one is winning a pga tour event with it

I might give this a shot next time at the range, but it seems like more of something to learn to get a "feel" of where you should be on your backswing, rather than a technique for hitting every ball.

I recently went on a golf trip. One of my friends is not good, he has a wicked slice. I was paired with him for a two man scramble, he started telling me about this article. He starts using it on the 10th hole and we used 5 of 7 drives from him on the back, there is something to it for sure. But, like many have said, it's a training aid, if it were truly better in some way, people would already be doing it.

Interesting. What if Phil started to do it? (for the record, I'll keep my driver. Thank you very much for asking though)

I can see where it might help a guy but a tour guy prob isn't ever going to need it.

    • It may not have been block practice, though, is one of the main points here. You may have been serving and from the same place, but you were likely trying to do slightly different things. It seems that would only be blocked practice if you were trying to hit the same exact ball hit to you to the same exact place in the far court. I'm not sure that's as random as if the ball that you're given to hit is at different places, too, but again…
    • I played tennis in college. I thought block practice was great for serves because you were starting the point and  you could easily adjust where you wanted to place the ball based off the same motion. I equate those to tee balls. I despised block practice for groundstrokes once you reached a certain level and your fundamentals were good. To me, hitting a 100 crosscourt backhands in a row was silly because I would never do that in a match. I needed to randomize it by hitting some deep, some angled, all with different speeds and spins. I share that same thought about iron play. Because we seldom hit the same approach shots hole after hole, I prefer to practice irons randomly.
