I think what it's getting at is you don't want the left arm to be pushed up against the chest on the backswing. Instead you want some space between your upper left arm and your chest. To me, that means starting my shoulder turn earlier in the swing so the arms aren't already "across" my chest.

Not sure if that's correct so take it with a gran of salt

Okay.  I think I see the difference, but I don't quite know what to do differently.

I'm playing later today, so I'm going to put this out of my head for now, and come back to it after the round.

Also, question mostly for @iacas -- would it be appropriate for me to bring this up on Evolvr as something I'd like to work on?  Or is it something I'd work on separately from that priority work (kind of like how I eventually will get through the April monthly challenge)?

And now I wonder if this is part of why whenever I measure driver swing speed (including when hitting a ball at the range and measuring, not just free swings) it's mid-90s but I rarely have a round with driver average over 210, and drives over 215 (regardless of average) are rare.  Driver is a 10.5 adjusted to 9.75 (setting D1, head is 10.5).

I’m a god awful public speaker, but I made a short video to hopefully explain that picture a bit better and some things I did to really feel how big the difference is.

I'd start working on this subtly. It's going to be what you do pretty soon in Evolvr.

Don't make it your primary focus at all, but work on it a bit now and then.

That did help.  And wow, even just watching it I can see the difference.  Thanks for taking the time to make that video!

Latest swing videos (filmed yesterday morning, just sent to evolvr just now).   I haven't made any changes from @Grizvok's video, but I do occasionally make a few swings with that arm change.  I am definitely doing what is described there as the amateur style (also, you're a better public speaker than you give yourself credit for).

I'm not sure if this is valid, but it is something I don't typically see from professionals. You are pretty much forced to change your inclination to the ground in the early backswing to get into a good spot.

I just sent these into Evolvr, so I'm not asking for comment, so much as using this thread as a swing diary whenever I remember to do so.

Did you trim them to just the swing? 🙂

No.  I can do that now if you'd prefer that I do.

I added this to Evolvr, adding it here now too.  Starting point of the relevant part of the videos.

CV drill, begins 1:07

DTL drill, begins 1:17

CV full 1:10

DTL full 1:03

I'll get back in the habit of trimming these in the future.

I want to keep a diary of swing speed, 7-iron and driver, measured periodically.  I figured this thread is where I'm most likely to find the data when I go back and wonder what it was in July 2022 or whatever, and since this thread is about my swing, this is on topic.

A month or so ago, my driver swing speed was 93 mph (several swings all in the 92-94 mph range).  Today, six swings, in numerical order were 92-95-96-97-97-100.  Let's call it 96 or 97 mph.  This is after almost a full month of 3x/week Fit for Golf, getting back into speed sticks, and a month of practice from an Evolvr lesson, and some combination of each of those contributed to a better / more efficient / faster swing.

7-iron, let's call today's measurement 70 (there were two outliers that weren't 70 or 71).

    • I have always been conflicted about this. When Pete came to Philly he changed the culture, and it led to a WS win. He wasn't the best player at that point of his career, but he was the catalyst. I liked and admired the grit and intensity he brought to the game. But what an awful human being. They do have a morals clause, Voting shall be based upon the player's record, playing ability, integrity, sportsmanship, character, and contributions to the team(s) on which the player played. Hence, conflicted.
    • The world of ruling is really interesting in golf.  I've had a very interesting discussion after a mid-am with the rules committee were they were trying to make me understand why it's only one shot penalty when you drop outside of a penalty area after trying to hit the ball out of it without success. I was supporting the idea that the player should repeat the shot from the penalty area adding 1 penalty stroke or 2 strokes if choose to drops out of the penalty area. It felt to me that letting the player drop outside of the penalty area for free wasn't right.  This last weekend another situation happened, we have several radio towers on our course. The local rule says that if you hit one with your ball you have to re-hit the shot, you are not allowed to continue with the first ball. A friend of mine hit a ball towards OB but it hit a tower that was placed outside of the white stakes. The ball ended OB after the bounce but we applied the local rule and make him re-hit without penalties. Is that ok? do the placement of the tower (inside or outside the course) matters? Of course the local rule don't take this into consideration.      What if the player didn't hit any shot with the clubs with the stickes on when the comment reach the rules staff? If you were to approach the guy at that moment he would finish the round with less clubs but avoid DQ.
    • We don't go out of our way to DQ anyone, or even to enforce any penalties.  Actually, we do our best to intervene when we can, to avoid penalties.  But when someone brings it to the attention of the Committee, we don't have any choice.  All rules apply in these events, we can't simply choose not to follow this particular one. As for the "dumb rule" you mentioned, I looked back as far as 1980, and accidentally knocking your ball off the tee wasn't a penalty back then, 45 years ago.  See Rule 14 here: Rules Of Golf 1980 They haven't done away with anything in that regard.
    • Not that you need to hear it from me, but take it slow. I’m sure you’ll be back out on the course in no time. I actually found that the silver lining when being injured is that I was able to prioritize working on the setup stuff without being distracted by making actual swings. I spent two weeks last month doing nothing but focusing on that because I really do anything else and I think it’s starting to pay dividends.
    • I appreciate the 👍 from @Rulesman, one reason I post these updates is to open myself for constructive criticism from more knowledgeable or experienced people.  Another reason is so that other folks might learn from my experiences, and his questions bring up an important point.  Rule 16.1 is pretty clear, you must have interference with your stance or area of intended swing to be allowed free relief.  But the existence of interference is much less easily defined.  It can depend on the location of the ball and the Abnormal Course Condition, the terrain and vegetation around the area, the direction of play, the type of shot that might be reasonably intended, and the skill of the player.  You don't get relief when the interference only exists when the player's intended shot is "clearly unreasonable".  I needed to evaluate all of these criteria under the watchful eye of the PGA professional who would have preferred to take relief from a pretty gnarly lie.  They say doing rules official work is hours of boredom interrupted by moments of intense pressure.
