Webb Simpson quit, cold turkey.

http://www.pgatour.com/the-upshot/2015/01/15/sony-open-in-hawaii-round-one.html

Quote:

“Today was a big day for me,” Simpson said. “It was one of my best putting rounds I've ever had to be honest.”

Simpson switched to the shorter putter this fall in Japan, but didn’t enjoy much success. He finished T55 at the Dunlop Phoenix. After the morning wave at Waialae, he shared the lead with Paul Casey after the lowest round of his career.

“I think the biggest thing --I don't know if you hear Keegan (Bradley) or whoever else, Adam (Scott), talk about it, the pressure comes when there's expectation,” Simpson said. “There's more focus on you, which you know, two ways to deal with it. One, it can negatively affect you, or two, you can realize that, hey, that's just how it is and you've got to play through it.”

Simpson had more secret weapons than his new 34-inch Odyssey White Hot putter. He also had a half-day lesson with Butch Harmon under his belt.

Frankly, I've tried anchored putters and putting at golf stores and I hated the feel.  To me, putting feels very natural in my set up and stance, which is basically the Utley setup.  Anchoring feels unnatural.  These Pros have tremendous hand eye coordination.  It should be easy for them to switch if they can gain confidence.

I used a belly putter for about 18 months.  What I found was that my putting improved from 5 feet in...but absolutely tanked from 20 feet out.  I ended up pretty much just swapping out bad putts.  My putts-per-round didn't change at all.

Best round of his PGA career, tie for best round on that course.

Ridiculously impressive.

These guys really are in another stratosphere.

I'm pretty sure I heard Chamblee say that every player who has switched back from a long putter to a conventional one has worse putting stats than they had before switching. While that did surprise me I think we need to look at those stats at the completion of this years play to get a clear picture.

There cannot be a large enough sample size yet for him to make a statistically significant conclusion.  Keegan Bradley, Web Simpson and now Adam Scott have switched.  I recall that Bradley is putting quite well and he has been doing it the longest.

    • Day 11: did mirror work for a while. Worked on the same stuff.
    • I'm not sure you're calculating the number of strokes you would need to give correctly. The way I figure it, a 6.9 index golfer playing from tees that are rated 70.8/126 would have a course handicap of 6. A 20-index golfer playing from tees that are rated 64/106 would have a course handicap of 11. Therefore, based on the example above, assuming this is the same golf course and these index & slope numbers are based on the different tees, you should only have to give 5 strokes (or one stroke on the five most difficult holes if match play) not 6. Regardless, I get your point...the average golfer has no understanding of how the system works and trying to explain it to people, who haven't bothered to read the documentation provided by either the USGA or the R&A, is hopeless. In any case, I think the WHS as it currently is, does the best job possible of leveling the playing field and I think most golfers (obviously, based on the back & forth on this thread, not all golfers) at least comprehend that.
    • Day 115 12-5 Skills work tonight. Mostly just trying to be more aware of the shaft and where it's at. Hit foam golf balls.
    • Day 25 (5 Dec 25) - total rain day, worked on tempo and distance control.
    • Yes it's true in a large sample like a tournament a bunch of 20 handicaps shouldn't get 13 strokes more than you. One of them will have a day and win. But two on one, the 7 handicap is going to cover those 13 strokes the vast majority of the time. 20 handicaps are shit players. With super high variance and a very asymmetrical distribution of scores. Yes they shoot 85 every once in a while. But they shoot 110 way more often. A 7 handicap's equivalent is shooting 74 every once in a while but... 86 way more often?
