picking a new golf ball

so i have been using the rocketballz urethane cause i got them for a great price. on sale $15 a dozen. truth is i dont swing my driver very fast and i dont shape shots. all in all its probably out of my league and would like to save the remaining balls for when my game picks up a bit. im looking for a new golf ball something with softer feel something straight and something cheap. i used to play the e6 but i still lost golf balls and it hurts less when its $15-$20 a dozen compared to $30+ per dozen.

ive heard some people say they like pro v1's its the greatest ball and yes ive played that ball too. but im not looking for a tour ball im looking for a quality ball with soft feel, low compression, and possibly fly a touch straighter then balls known for having higher spin rates.

if anyone knows of some balls in this category and have played with them id love to know what ball you use and why. so far ive been looking at callaway supersoft, wilson duo, 50 elite and zip, top flight gamer soft and slazenger raw straight. i'm still open to any suggestions and any advice would be great.

Save you money and buy mid priced balls.

You also can't count out the ball because of the brand. Top Flite Gamer series are good, Wilson DUO are good also.

right, of course Wilson makes good balls.

but you know what I mean, the bottom of line stuff at Wal-mart or wherever for $10 a box.

even then, I highly doubt it would hurt your round.  I would find putting to be a little difficult with a cheap hard ball though.

I like the softness of the taylor made cover.

I'm not a big believer in the importance of the golf ball either, but this is the first year I've every actually bought specific brands of golf balls so what do I know.

I've been using Top Flight Gamer Tour and Callaway Diablo HX Tour and really liking them both (can't tell a difference on the course), they're 2 dozen for $35 at Dick's or Golf Galaxy which is a little pricey if you lose them often. This weekend I bought 2 dozen Noodles (1 soft and 1 distance) but haven't hit them yet. They're 2 dozen for $20, which is more to my liking. Also considered buying a pack of Pro V1s this weekend just to see what all the hype is about, but can't bring myself to spend $4+ for a golf ball.

I know Golf Galaxy offers ball fittings, never been through one but I have been curious recently what (if any) difference I might see on a Trackman from hitting a few different balls. Ever since reading LSW I've been in love with the idea of getting on the Trackman, but haven't made time to actually do it.

That's a great price for RBZ Urethane. If you're limiting yourself to $15/dz, stock up.

Softer Ball?

Callaway Supersoft gets good reviews (but it's a new ball so price may be higher than $15/dz)

Sounds as if you may require some assistance in the swing department.

But as I posted, the ball I hear most about this year for a soft feeling distance type ball is the Callaway SuperSoft at $19.99

any particular reason? i used it once while i was regularly playing an e6 but it was only a sleeve and nothing gave me the "wow" factor. i could have been i really didn't give it a chance. and i'm pretty sure i gave the other 2 balls to a buddy once i lost the first one

It's not really a "wow" ball, it's just a solid golf ball at a good price. Same for the gamer series and the wilson duo's.... They are all good playable balls, but nothing "wow" about them.

i guess to be a little more clear on my end "wow" may have been the wrong expression. i think i should have stated that coming from mainly using the e6 i didn't notice any feel for the ball. but like i said i also didnt give it a serious chance i ditched the other 2 right away. i also noticed it cut very easily but i have different irons from the ones i was using then

Recently I switched to the Callaway SuperSoft. I get more consistent results on chip and run shots (smooth release), and on putting. Comparable distance too. One caution: I don't get much bite on the SuperSoft for short wedge shots inside 20 yards. I need a half swing or more to get any real check-spin.

I've been using the gamer soft, surprisingly with no distance loss over the srixon q-star. I may have to give the the supersoft a shot.

Usually I play the NXT Tour but lately been buying the $9.99 Surlyn X-outs at Walmart. I try to pick boxes with mostly NXT and Velocity balls but yesterday I got a box with two sleeves of the DT SoLo. I've played it before but not in a good while so figured why not and used the DT SoLo last night. Probably just a good day swinging but I played the best golf of the season with that ball last night. Thing took off like a rocket from the driver. I left my phone at work so no GPS but I was inside the 100 yard marker several times, about half way between the green and marker, on shorter par 4's in the 340-360 range. No problem holding greens either but my instructor has me hitting the ball really high. The ball was inches from the mark on full swing approach shots. Felt good on the wedges too but I am a bump and run guy. I was 3 3 putts from shooting a best ever round with the DT SoLo. I don't think the ball was to blame for my crappy putting.

I've posted a couple of reviews on balls. I'm trying to find a soft feeling ball that will bite on the greens. You'll never be able to really score well unless the ball will bite on the green. I tried the Titleist NXT Tour S last week. Love the fell off the driver, iron and putter, but they don't check very well on the greens. I've tried the Calloway Supersoft and Bridgestone e6 with the same lack of spin. I'd recommend getting some recycled balls. They're half the price (or less). They'll perform just as well for you. Once your game gets better, you'll know what I mean about having a ball bite on the green. Right now, the best option for me is the Srixon Z-Star (I like yellow). I'm also toying with the idea of the B330 RXS.

Look at the Wilson Elite 50... it's supposed to be a 50 compression ball and it's less than $12 per dozen... I picked up a box the other week but only putted with one once... it worked for me I guess.

Also try Snakeeyes... I picked up a box of the red and black... soft distance and soft distance extreme... they were also less than $12 per dozen.

I got all 3 boxes (Wilson and the 2 Snakeeyes) at the same time and have been gaming the Snakeeyes red for the past couple of rounds. I've only lost 1 so far and these balls seem to be a bit straighter for me than the Orlimars I had before... normally I'll play Slazenger Raw Distance or whatever's on sale but I think I'm liking the Snakeeyes.

I'll try the Wilson's when I lose the Snakeeyes then decide which of the 2 I'm going to stick with.
