Getting back, albeit slowly, to normal...

Our annual member/member tournament begins tomorrow. 12 flights of six teams.  Round robin within each flight with the winners of each flight progressing to a shoot out to ultimately determine the winning team.

A lot of fun with great competition. There may be drinking involved.

We’ll see…  😊

A second place low Gross (and a 2nd place low Net but Gross paid more) in the Livonia City Golf Championship.  Two day total of 152.  Sounds slightly impressive?  Well, it was the "Super Senior" flight (65+) and we played the Ladi ... um ... Forward tees.

Well, we stated well enough on Friday, winning our first 2 matches handily.  Then the rains came.  While I’m a bit of a mudder, my partner is not.  We lost the third match, and ended the first day T2 in our flight.

Our first match Saturday, we both played well, but lost to a 4 hcp who carried his team.  He began with a double on the first hole, but still managed to shoot 34 for the 9.  We were just overpowered that match.  The second, and final match brought an absolute deluge of rain.  After a 2 hour delay, needed for the course to drain, we managed to eek out a win.

Scoring for the nine hole matches was by points.  1 point to win a hole, 1/2 point for a tie, and 0 points to lose the hole.  1 additional point to win the match.  We finished with 26 points, a solid second place in the flight, but not good enough to advance to the shootout.

All in all, a fun event, as always.

Played a member guest this weekend at friends club. Stableford  type scoring system where you had to get a certain amount of points as a team depending on handicap. My partner had a bad couple of days but the guys that won shot 11 points over their goal. So oh well.

next weekend is my clubs two man Hopefully it turns out better.

Well today was round 1 of our Men’s Club Championship.  It’s Flighted and we have 85 players with 8 Flights.  I’m in the 1st Flight and what a day.  Front 9 was a disaster!  A 44!  Double on the 1st hole. Struggled out of the Green side bunker on the 1st hole. Wet sand, but can’t blame that, just poor swings. Immediately in the hole!  3rd hole par 3. Drew it too much, plugged in the  wall of the bunker!  Another double.  4th hole a bogey!  What a display I thought, shooting myself in the foot and out of contention.  Par on the next hole.  6th hole is a par 5, caught the left fairway bunker, so a layup.  3rd shot on the green but long.  20+ footer downhill to a front red flag. Drained it for the birdie.  Par on the next hole. On 8 I’m 120 out, a little breeze from behind.  Ever hit a shot and as your watching it you immediately know you should have hit one club less.  Over the green into heavy rough. Will spare the details of my triple.  9th hole, another double from the middle of the fairway!  Don’t ask!

Making the turn.  Par 5,  on in two!  Lipped out the Eagle, but got one back. 11th hole just missed the birdie from 8ft.  Yeah a par! Two more pars followed. On 14, a 365 par four I teed off with my 4 wood. You can run out of fairway on this hole and I almost did. 120 left, hit the PW to 6 ft. Got one more back.  15 a par 5, went for it with 2nd shot from the fairway. Pin High! Unfortunately I’m left side of the green with a downhill shot.  A bogey!  Par  3 16 is next. 140 down hill, wind was picking up.  9 iron to about 10 feet.  Drained it for a two.  17 is an elevated tee, playing 380.  4 wood again, big draw missing the bunkers on the right.  Pin is back right playing just over 150ish.  Hit the 7, going right at it.  Remember I said it was windy?  Was expecting it to be within 10 feet but when I arrived I was lucky it stayed on the back shelf. 20+ feet left.  Putter stayed hot! Birdie!  I’m feeling pretty good now, I’m eating away at that front nine 44.  18 is deceiving par 4.  I managed to give back 2 strokes with a double.  But a 35 back took a little sting away, but tomorrow is another day.  Golf is a funny game!

One of my playing partners shot 34 on the front. He’s a 2 HDCP, good ball striker.  Never expected him to play the back nine so poorly!  He took a 10 on 18. 2 out of bounds, 5 from the fairway, over the green, uphill shot left short, rolled back down. A few putts later It’s a 10!  He and I are tied for 8th place!  Round 2 tomorrow!

I signed up for our Club Championship this year - gross division.

Typically our club hosts 2 net flights, along with the gross (aka, the "true" club champion) and the event is always a 3 day event held in June. Our Club has over 300 members, many of whom are skilled plus handicaps. Last year, the winning score was 17 under par. As a 6-7 index, I essentially have no chance of ever winning this thing.

But.....due to Covid, the Club limited the field to 12 players and is hosting a gross flight only over 2 days. Many of the best players did not sign up this year, including the defending champion. If there was ever a year that a hack like me had even a .001% chance of winning the title, this is the year. Limited field, fewer days, and potentially windy fall conditions. I know I'm dreaming, but you never know!

Lol. 3000-1 sounds about right. I appreciate the confidence - good to know I've got some support here on TST!

Hey, have fun and catch some lightning!  You can't win if you don't play so you are already half way there.

Had a stableford competion at my club yesterday. I made 3 birdies, 14 pars and had no result on one hole! What a weird round. For 17 holes played just unbelievable and on the 14th (my 5th hole) hit three drives on a short par 4 and all were lost balls, so I just moved on 😀 On hindsight I was probably too aggressive on the tee shot, but that might have just freed my up to go about the rest of my round. So my adjusted score would be 70 (one under par) and made 40 points and finished second.

I didn't circle back on this thread, but needless to say, I did not win. I did perform respectably, with an 83-79 in tough conditions (the tee boxes were set almost 200 yards longer than normal) and I only finished 14 shots off the winner. Sorry, @Double Mocha Man - you won't be able to retire early off my performance.

I played as a 2 man in a pretty big local tournament that gets top flight guys.

The course was set up long and tough, but weather was good.

1st day =X

2nd day =79

I hit the ball really well both days and would’ve shot in the 70s both days if I didn’t take an X on a hole.

  • I didn’t know where to hit the tee shot, so my captain gave me a starting line
  • hit the ball 15 yards right of the start line- quality drive, captain says that’s not bad, you can get home from there
  • ball was lost on an overgrown hillside and the team was in good shape, so I sat in the cart instead of holding up play
  • i had 50 yards of open fairway to the left
  • thanks captain

Putting was bad but, even with a 5 putt (4 of them were within 3.5 feet and I tried on them all) - I scored pretty well and made a handful of birdies on a tough setup.

Lagged a 35 footer to 4 feet and missed 3 footers until it finally went in. Greens were fast AF.

I have a big problem where I can’t aim or know where a putt is starting every now and then.

I keep working on my putting mat, but it still comes up every now and then

Here’s a tournament in planning on playing in! The Durham Amateur Golf Championship is a two day event (June 5-6), and it’s very affordable ($100, covers the two tournament rounds and one practice round). The good news is that we will be riding both days, unlike a lot of tournaments I’ve seen.

I am going to get my coach’s signature on the form tonight at our banquet (must have coach’s initials on form), and I’ll report back here once I’ve registered!
