The "other side of the aisle" has been begging for a completely unqualified political hack....someone with no medical knowledge or relevant experience?

Gotta give it to you though boogie.....it's a VERY strong move on your part to try to push this one off on the right!

The other side of the aisle had been filibustering the appointment of a Surgeon General for over a year. This "czar" is nothing but a manager who understands the working of government and will rely on experts in a team effort. If we had a Surgeon General, that person would fill that role automatically.

Yeah too bad we don't have an official Surgeon General.  Obama has only nominated one person, Dr. Vivek Murthy, who held the strong belief that guns were a health care issue.  Republicans and some democrats were critical of the nomination so they didn't even bother voting on it.  Obama's feelings were hurt so he has yet to nominate another candidate as Surgeon General, instead he hired a lawyer to be the Ebola Czar.   Rear Admiral Boris Lushniak is the acting Surgeon General but he's seemed reluctant to step up and do the job in the heat of the Ebola crisis so maybe once golf season is over we'll get a real Surgeon General.

His feelings were hurt? No, he feels strongly that guns ARE a healthcare issue, and anybody who thinks otherwise is a blind ideologue. The Surgeon General can't take your guns away, but he should at the least  be able to study it as a health issue, but that gets the gun nuts' panties in a bind.

Anyway, off topic. But we need a Surgeon General for this crisis and the President should be given the ability to pick his Cabinet based on his policies. If it was given an up and down vote, we would have a Surgeon General today.

I just saw a picture on TV of a guy in front of the White House in a Haz Mat suit with a sign stating, "Stop the flights!" There haven't been any direct flights from West Africa in quite a while. I thought the issue was restricting travel.

Lot's of stupid people out there trying to increase the fear level.

Trying to contain Ebola is a prudent thing to do but for the most part:

I agree with Shep. Calm down.

That was the point of my first post in this thread. Funny how politics can affect many people's reasoning ability, especially our "leaders".

This is what happens when stupid people are combined with ginned up fear. The kids are from Rwanda IN East Africa.
I recognize this is a pinch off-topic, since it's not really about the US, but it's still interesting ...
IMO not off topic when you consider the fear mongering US media. It shows how inept Africa is at fighting disease and most of the scare here is based on what is happening in Africa, people thinking it could happen on a similar scale here etc. I would be willing to wager there hasn't been a syphilis related death contracted in the US since the advent of penicillin. There are only in the neighborhood of 12k annual syphilis infections in the US and it's over the minute you get a shot. People die over there from things that haven't been a threat here in decades. But it appears the ebola scare is already starting wind down with the news patients are being released. If they hadn't mishandled the Duncan case the total US deaths would be zero. Even if ebola was the root cause of his death it appears what killed him was negligence. However the rarity of ebola is a big reason it has led to fewer deaths than other diseases in Africa. The toll could rise over there considering the outbreak is just months old.

So all the other people in Dallas are ok.  They person on the cruise ship was fine.  The person at the pentagon lied about having been in West Africa, and is fine.

Still only 2 cases of ebola here, and it seems like the CDC has updated their guidelines to make sure it doesn't happen again.

Why is it again that the president is taking major flak for this?

Part of the problem is his playing right into it, like suggesting that he would take other things off his desk this week in order to deal exclusively with the Ebola "crisis" in this country.

Really just about opportunity isn't it? Doesn't matter who is POTUS any chance to get some blood in the water...Slightly OT but I can't wait for the local elections to be over. I don't care who it is you never hear someone say I plan to do this and this is why it's a good thing. It's always they other guy is a rotten scoundrel and that's why you should vote for me. Rather these are all the reasons my opponent is a douche of the highest order and I approve this message.

Agreed. Might I suggest a DVR? I've seen very, very few ads this election season, I tape everything I watch. This is Gunther and I approve this post.

I hear more on the radio than anything. Unfortunately it's on all day in the office. I'd suggest something digital with minimal interruptions but consensus is unlikely. Our 50 something office assistant is a Taylor Swift nut. Frankly surprised ebola hasn't made it into the local campaign attacks. My guess only because it's not relevant in CO. Anyone in TX heard anything?

From the Onion:

Quote:

Nurse Being Treated For Ebola Impressed With Health Workers’ New Gear

DALLAS—Admiring the personal protective equipment shielding her caregivers from the deadly virus, a nurse receiving treatment for Ebola told reporters Monday that she was very impressed with the medical workers’ newly issued biohazard gear. “Wow, I only had the flimsy gown that exposed several inches around my neck, but this guy’s decked out in a really nice full-body suit that covers everything,” said the infected nurse, who was particularly taken by the updated gear’s sealed hood, large apron, rubber boots, and second pair of surgical gloves, which are now recommended by the CDC for all hospital staffers treating patients exposed to the disease. “Sure, the surgical mask I had seemed great at the time, but the brand-new breathing pack and air filtration system my nurse was using really take the cake. It’s cool to be one of the first people to see this high-tech equipment.” The nurse confirmed she was most impressed with the new protocols for removing the biohazard gear, which reportedly involved more than tossing the protective clothing in the hospital’s laundry bin.

Funny. We've got a local county commissioner trying to exploit it but haven't heard it used in campaign ads yet. But I haven't seen or heard many. Almost fell outta my chair after clicking into this: http://www.humoar.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/10/air-bolas.jpg

I see that Darrell Issa is going to have one last hearing before his term as Chairman of the Oversight Committee is over. Of course, he will find a way to blame Obama for the Ebola "crisis".

I was listening to an interview this afternoon on the way home from work with a doctor working in a rural area of Liberia. She says that the 90% mortality rate for Ebola is really not close to accurate if the patient gets supportive care. The number is closer to 55-60% and would be even lower if they had more resources and they were being treated in a better environment. The number in this outbreak is high because so many people get no care at all or come in when it is in a late stage.

One of the Dallas nurses, the one who flew to Cleveland, is free of the virus.

"We are overjoyed to announce that, as of yesterday evening, officials at Emory University Hospital and the Centers for Disease Control (and Prevention) are no longer able to detect virus in her body," the family said in a statement hours after Vinson spoke with her mother, Debra Berry.
