Does anyone know what the drill is called when you lay a club along your toe line and back of your right foot. When you swing down you check to make sure your club is along that line when parallel to the ground. I think it is to help groove hand path. Hope this makes sense.

Thanks guys - had no idea.  I'm pretty sure my club head is starting to point behind me at this point. It's good to have this as reference (I really need to find a 5SK Instructor).

Just don't get caught up in that position unless an instructor (hopefully a good one) has asked you to work on it. An "inside takeaway", one where the club gets more "behind" you at the A2 position may or may not be an issue depending on other things. There are people on the PGA Tour who take it away inside but hit the ball well enough to have Tour cards. Steve Stricker is the obvious one but there are others.

Haven't looked at your swing thread recently but I seem to recall Mike or Erik giving you some priority pieces to work on. Be a Stupid Monkey, put your swing blinders, roll up your sleeves and attack what's already on your plate. It will be a better use of your practice time.

I think the OP is asking about the downswing instead of the takeaway-- A6 instead of A2.  Is that right, @jclark ?

Good advice. I'm back on task with key #1.

Oops, yes, you may be right. I was talking about A2, but in any case the message remains the same, if your instructor isn't asking you to work on it there is probably a reason...hopefully that reason isn't "your instructor sucks"...but that's a whole other thread.

Oh, well then you want it coming from the inside at A6.

Define "inside"?

Of the hands? Not necessarily?

Of the ball? DUH!

My bad.

This visual may help, I would probably take a look at Key #2 first though.

That's what I thought. I was talking to my golf pro and he told me I needed to groove a better hand path in the downswing because my hands get too far away from my body causing me to come in a bit steep. He talked about the drill I stated in the OP but never showed me. Lol

Sorry. From the inside of the ball, but my understanding is that the further outside your hands you get at A6 with the club head the harder is to get at the ball from the inside. So being parallel to the target line at A6 is probably OK if you're freakin' awesome at clubface control but being inside your hands would be a better bet for mortals.

I've been wrong before and I may be wrong again but that's what I thought.

I'd prefer that people swing OUT a bit more than IN, but both are flaws and the clubhead should ideally be relatively close to inline with the hands at 6.

Assuming of course the hands aren't in a weird spot themselves. And also that the club isn't "going from" a bad spot to a bad spot that just happens to pass through "inline with the hands at 6."

The way I understand it: your hands at A6 should be the same distance from your body as they were at address. Or relatively close. My hands were getting about double that distance away from my body.

Pictures are worth a thousand words! OK so the hands do separate from the body a bit. From A6 to A7 they keep that distance? I need to freaking go back to the pro and ask him what the heck he was talking about!

Almost everyone returns the shaft at a steeper angle at impact than at address. Some didn't. Since the ball is in the same spot, the hands are often a bit higher.

    • Is it? I bought the Stack radar to replace my PRGR based on what Stack told me! When I am swinging for speed, the PRGR would miss 50%-80% of my backswings due to a higher speed. The stack seldom misses those- at least for me.
    • As an analyst by nature, I would like to compare the scores under both systems. It is something we can easily do if we have the data. I actually thought the new system was less fair to those whose game was on the decline - like mine! Old: Best 10 of last 20 scores with the .96 multiplier. Course handicap excluded course rating and overall par. New: Best 8/20. Course handicap includes course rating -par. My understanding is Stableford caps scores at Net double bogey like stroke play. If so, handicap should be slower to rise because you are only using 8 versus 10 scores. If I am missing something, I am curious enough to  want to understand what that may be. My home course tees that I play are 72.1/154 now. My best score out here is 82. When my game started to decline, my handicap didn’t budge for 13 rounds because of good scores in my first 8! I know I am an anomaly but my handicap has increased almost 80% in the past few years (with only a few rounds this year). For a few months I knew I was losing every bet because my game was nowhere near my handicap. I suspect I have steamrolled a few nuances but that shouldn’t matter much. When I have modeled this with someone playing the same tees and course, one good round, or return to form, will immediately reduce the handicap by some amount.
