This is Communal Mirth Project Challenge #001:

You have three attempts to hit a pitch shot with four golf balls at once from a fairway lie or the best approximation (a mat is fine).

Tips:

  • Put the balls in a slight arc.
  • Use the proper pitching motion so that your club glides for a long time.
  • Put the balls two or three inches apart so that they have space to launch without just hitting the ball in front.
  • Watch out for toe shanks. :)

Rules:

  • Film yourself trying this the first THREE times. No practicing. :) Scout's honor.
  • Post the YouTube video to this thread when you're done.
  • Mirth ensues.

Have fun!

P.S. We filmed an instructional video on this a few weeks ago that I've got to edit and get online at some point…

LOL ... ummmm ... you're hitting FOUR balls.  I'm pretty sure it's a safe bet that the challenge is just to see if you can actually pitch all of them.  The first one might go 40 and the last might go 20, but the goal (seems to me) is just to see if you can actually pitch them all ... AT ALL.

My next question was how far do you expect all the balls to go. . . :-D

Does it have to be a legal stroke or can you use the "saucer pass" chipping technique? I should be able to give this a shot tomorrow on an empty practice range during my free period.

Legal stroke. Except of course that you're hitting four balls. :)

Alright, I'll see what I can do.

Can your fairway lie be "improved" by raising the turf for the first and last ball so that you can hit them all on a slight vertical, as well as horizontal, arc or will I just need to find a naturally dish shaped area?

Whatever you want… no guarantees people don't call you on that one. :)

For some reason YouTube doesn't want to process this...here's a VIMEO.

Got 3 (2 got up, 1 was basically bladed) on the first pass and got all 4 on the second and third attempt. There was plenty of "dispersion". :-$

Zero practice swings, what you see is what you get. I had an advantage from the thin layer of snow. They were also semi frozen foam balls, dunno if that would make any difference to the level of difficulty...but it was also the first time I've hit a ball in two weeks, and the first time I've hit a pitch in well over a month.

  • First attempt was too much leading edge and I dug in before I got to the fourth ball.
  • Balls were lined up on a gentle INwards arc.
  • Just tried to keep the swing bottom as long and level as possible. Used my knees to make everything more "lateral" so I could stretch out the swing bottom. Sometimes I do that to hit flops...

Sorry about the sun glare, didn't realize how crappy a spot I choose to film until it was too late.

Now somebody has to do it off of a tighter lie.

Fantastic effort EJ!  I especially like the stylish pose at the end of each shot.  Wait, is it a shot, or are they shots?  Or do you mix them up and call it "a shots?"

Sweet, nice job. Could you call that a fluffed lie? lol

About a 25-30 yard swing. First swing felt clunky with the fourth ball, second swing felt better. With the third swing the fourth ball went way left :loco: No change in pitching technique, just made sure to keep turning through the shot.

    • Day 132: did some mirror work while watching TV. Worked on backswing stuff primarily.
    • 26 Nov 24 -  It was not a record breaking round by any means, but rather a simple walking of the back nine today playing TBWB (two ball-worse ball) where the challenge is to play the worse of the two shots played - could be an errant drive from the woods, a tree knocked ball that is 100 yds farther back down the fairway, a nGIR ball as opposed to a GIR….the goal today was to stay no worse than bogie thru nine.  Managed to achieve that goal - bogied 7 holes with one dbl and one par to counter the dbl.  It’s about staying focused and not letting a bad shot or lie derail, but rather be an opportunity.
    • Day 208 (26 Nov 24)- Opted to walk 9 today (was the back nine as they had a huge group going off the front) but instead of it being persimmons and blades, I had the regular gamers but made it a TBWB (two ball-worst ball) round.  This really challenges on several fronts - ball striking to be as consistent as possible, course management from non-optimal lies and keeping your head in it as it can be depressing to nail a shot on line-on target and the second rattles the trees right and it’s over 50 yards back and that’s the one you have to play.  The goal was to be no worse than bogie overall (+9).  Finished the round exactly on the number with some solid recoveries, no penalty strokes and only one 3-putt.
