Hi had a fitting for Mizuno irons today. Enjoyable experience! My grip size was plus 4 wraps. Could I get someone to add wraps to my clubs and refit the original grips? Cheers Peter

It's unlikely the original grips could be saved. Most of the time they have to be cut off. You should use this as a great time to get new grips.

+4 wraps seems like a lot… You must have very large hands.

Well, if he has large hands, you know what that means.
He wears large gloves!
I do not like small grips. I have an average size hand, but use jumbo Golf Pride Tour Wrap grips. From memory I think jumbo grips equate to 5 wraps. Easy to look up. UI can save putter grips by using an air compressor, but am not very successful saving normal grips.

Do you put your grip down into your finger joints or is it more up in the front of your palm for stability?

Welcome to the site @peterpigman .  I use standard +3 wraps.  I also wear an XL glove.  With +4 wraps you are almost in midsize depending on the grip and shaft OD.

Not sure if this was directed to me, but I grips my clubs more in the fingers. I've worked hard on making sure I don't put the grip too much in my palm. Nasty things happen. My glove size if ML for some makers and L for others, so I don't have a large hand (but I do have....). :-) I feel (and many others) that the hand should wrap around the grip with the finger tips barely brushing your palm pad. As far as grip, I think MVMAC has a good video on that. It pays to get your grip right and keep your grips clean and tacky.

I would agree with iacas that this would be an excellent time to get new grips. Most people underestimate how nice it feels to be playing with new grips, it's almost like having new clubs. +4 wraps will make it a little difficult to slide the grips onto the clubs, so make sure to use plenty of solvent.

There is a nice tool you can buy at Hireko golf to save grips. Works great on every grip I tried it on except the old winn wraps. I just use it to save newly purchased or friends clubs. Mine are on with air so the tool is not required for removal.

I use 4 wraps under a midsize grip, no solvent, air only.

I was referring to what you should do when using an installation technique that doesn't involve a compressor.

I'm not sure even what +4 means.

unless it's jumbo +4

Standard +4 is about mid-size

mid-size +4 is about jumbo

Jumbo +4 is approx putting a cucumber on the end of your club

just buy the next larger size

(I'm speaking sideways here as I do have a couple wedges with 5-6 wraps - the color grips I want for those two wedges only comes in standard - and I'm mid +2)

no issues - just really use a lot of solvent up front - they are multi-compound, it's neat during install, you can hear some of the fibers on the corded portion popping.......probably a good indication that taping up more than 3-4 wraps is likely not a great option to take

rather than adding wraps, I just use midsize grips - get the same feel, and are much easier to change.

I use the classic grip, so maybe under the palm is saying the same thing. Definitely not in the palm though.

I grab it however because I am looking at how the head is set behind the ball for my shot.

    • To flog this subject even further, if that's even possible, this article from Golf Monthly just appeared today in one of my news feeds. Written by a golf writer in the UK who I never heard of, he's basically saying that there should be only 3-5 rounds from the most recent 20 that should count towards the average and only competitive rounds should count. He claims the erratic scorers would have less of an advantage than they do now. He makes a lot of references to "club golfers" in the UK being the ones who are mostly dissatisfied. https://share.google/qmZZBEoJvOxHxJGil  In my experience with my league where we have golfers with indexes ranging from 5 to 40, looking at the weekly results from the past two years, I can detect no pattern that would substantiate the claim that the current system gives an unfair advantage to either erratic golfers (aren't we all?) or higher handicappers. Apparently though, at least in the UK, this seems to be "a thing."
