A piece about golf clubs in the Hudson Valley area opening up indoor practice centers especially for use during the winter.

Quote:

Golfers in the Lower Hudson Valley no longer have to put the clubs away for the winter. Private clubs and public ranges offer players an opportunity to keep hitting balls.

Neither snow, nor rain, nor heat, nor gloom of night can stay some resolute golfers from the swift completion of their appointed rounds.

In other words, Mother Nature isn't playing through.

An increasing number of dedicated golfers in the Lower Hudson Valley are taking advantage of a growing trend. Numerous clubs have built indoor learning centers over the last decade, and they are more popular than ever.

All these facilities are nice, but most of the clubs mentioned in the piece are super exclusive, with very deep pockets and the public facilities have well, heated bays, that's it. So until radar, force plates and technology get cheaper, as does building costs, this is out of the reach of the general public. I could rent an indoor room that has a golf simulator and buy myself a FS or a GC2 and use that I guess.

You'll have to bring the booze! :banana:

@RFKFREAKWhat's the cost on an F2? $20k?

A lot cheaper than a membership in any of those highfalutin clubs. :-D Edit: Oh wait, F2, as in race car? I thought F2 was a mistype for FS.

Ha! My ride's not gonna cover that....

Well, maybe we could use your ride and go up to Northway Golf to use their FS. :beer:

I have one of those Optishot things, and it is not perfect but it can tell swing speed and path and figures the ball spin from that, and if you use a foam ball, you can have a pretty good idea how you hit it. Since it does not follow the ball, it assumes the ball characteristics. It comes out uncannily close to my experience at the range, both in misses and when I hit it solidly, the distances match up with the signs at the range. My wife bought it for me, and I think it was around $300. You need ten foot ceilings to use it inside. Putting is pretty pointless with it, imho, so I set it to autoputt when playing a game.  It probably exaggerates distance, because it does come out the same, but I can feel that I never really swing freely inside.

I have a question about indoor practice though. Is slow motion swinging valuable? Does it translate? I have been trying it, and I feel like it should, but in anybody's experience, does doing several slow motion swings a day, focusing on swing path, posture, etc help when the warm weather comes?

There can be tremendous value in doing this! Good idea to use a mirror though to make sure you are rehearsing what you want it to look like.

Living in the northeast, I agree. I've been doing mirror work for Keys 1 & 2 recently doing slow deliberate swings and when I get a chance to do it outdoors, I'll see how it compares.

Imho, and take my advice with a grain of salt, mirror work is useful but to an extent. It's great for figuring things out and reinforcing feels, but you can only do so much of it, I try not to do too much as to groove a move that's no good. I use mirrors - I actually have a setup where I see both face on and down the line simultaneously, but there's nothing quite like hitting a ball, whether it be into a net or an open range.

Once, when I stayed with my relatives in their condo, I went to the rooftop gym, it was pretty big, and so I hit foam golf balls around with a 7 iron and a little mat. It felt like almost practice, I hit the balls off the glass wall. The concierge came up and thought I was hitting real golf balls. As soon as I showed him the foam balls, it was like, oh, that's no problem.

Nice! Next time I'm in the city during golf season we should meet up. Have you ever played Split Rock/Pelham?
