Ping boosts G30's long game, adds new short-game clubs, too

By Mike Stachura

Ping enjoyed plenty of success on the professional tours and in the marketplace with long game clubs like the G30 driver this fall, but it's starting the new year off with a focus on where golfers spend the majority of their strokes: the short game. While there will be a line extension to the G30 driver family with the new G30 LS Tec, it's the Glide wedges and Cadence TR putters that are the big splash.

Glide wedges

The groove rollback’s greatest effect may have been in inspiring equipment companies to rethink every possibility when it comes to generating more spin. The latest example might be Ping’s new Glide wedges, which feature a new chrome-plated finish to improve spin potential. According to Ping engineers, the finish increases the metal’s hydrophobicity, or a substance’s tendency to repel water. A more hydrophobic wedge face is going to provide cleaner contact in wetter conditions like the rough and dew-covered fairways, and the Glide’s chrome-plated finish tests out as more hydrophobic than the dark blast finish of last year’s Tour wedges. The Glide ($130, 13 lofts, three sole options) also matches groove edges and angles to each loft to improve full-shot spin on the lower lofts and chip and pitch shot spin on the higher lofts. The new Dylawedge grip is three-quarters of an inch longer to make it easier for players to comfortably choke down on the grip on partial shots.

On the PGA Tour, Bubba Waston, Hunter Mahan and Billy Horschel have put the Glide wedges in their bags.

Cadence TR putters

With the growing enthusiasm for counterbalanced putters, it’s becoming clear that weight is a solution for balky strokes. But while the extreme weight of a counterbalanced putter may help the shakiest of moves, Ping is suggesting that finding the right weight is a real key in putter fitting for all strokes.

To that end, it’s rolling out the new Cadence TR line of putters, which give golfers the choice of two standard head weights. Ping engineers have studied data from thousands of putting strokes submitted through its iPing putting app and determined that there are two main stroke tempos. Quicker tempos benefit from a standard to lighter head weight, while slower moves produce better results with a heavier head weight.

Did you get a chance to hit the wedges? If so can you tell us your thoughts.

Only got to hit a couple pitches with the 54 in the SS sole. They felt great, similar to my Gorge wedges but even a little bit "softer".

Could you explain a little more in depth the difference between the 3 soles they are offering? I don't really know how I would pick one.

Thin sole, standard sole and wide sole. Wider sole can effectively play like a higher bounce wedge. Marty talks about the sole designs at about 2:20 in the video. For you I would try out the SS or WS wedges. I use the SS and it's enough glide for me.

Ok thanks. I'm definitely going to hit all of them. I wasn't sure after watching the video how I would know which would be better just buy hitting them at a golf store.

The TS version (Thin Sole) is ideal for golfers who play on hard, firm courses or who typically play courses with firm sand. The WS version (Wide Sole) is better suited to soft conditions and fluffy sand, because its wider sole won’t dig as easily. The SS model (Standard Sole) is the most versatile and has a width between the TS and WS models.

Ha ha ok thanks. I play quite a few different courses but I'm leaning towards the SS. I hope you had a good time at the show.

I tried the Glides today, very nice wedges but I could only hit them off the mats.  I'd like to see how they feel on the course and in the sand.

Lol, I read that as you were unable to hit them well anywhere but the mats, as opposed to you being unable to even attempt them elsewhere. I'm not too bright sometimes.

Has anybody tried the cadence ketsch?

Yeah. A solid feeling putter. If you like the shape and everything it can be pretty good. The grooves do not really do much of anything. I like the heavier version if you play courses with greens over about 9. But you can also find a bunch of other putters out there that do the same thing. There is not a lot of innovation you can really do in a putter.

If you like mallet putters with prominent lines then it's a good one to check out. Putters are a pretty individual type of thing so it's not really any better or worse than other putters on the market.

    • To flog this subject even further, if that's even possible, this article from Golf Monthly just appeared today in one of my news feeds. Written by a golf writer in the UK who I never heard of, he's basically saying that there should be only 3-5 rounds from the most recent 20 that should count towards the average and only competitive rounds should count. He claims the erratic scorers would have less of an advantage than they do now. He makes a lot of references to "club golfers" in the UK being the ones who are mostly dissatisfied. https://share.google/qmZZBEoJvOxHxJGil  In my experience with my league where we have golfers with indexes ranging from 5 to 40, looking at the weekly results from the past two years, I can detect no pattern that would substantiate the claim that the current system gives an unfair advantage to either erratic golfers (aren't we all?) or higher handicappers. Apparently though, at least in the UK, this seems to be "a thing."
