I don't think this formula works for me. I typically have a 250 or more carry for my driver with more on "open" holes where I can launch it. I hit my PW about 110 normally. On my approaches, I swing for accuracy, not distance. If I want more distance I grab a longer iron. The exception would be forced carry and needing to stop the ball quicker (like over a tucked pin). On fairway shots that will land short of the ideal landing, I will swing harder to maximize distance and the formula might apply.

This is curious, and I see your equipment is relatively standard stuff.

On top of this, I'm guessing your PW is 48 degrees or so? Do you take a half swing with it or something like that?

Don't be so hard on yourself.  You have plenty of other major flaws that I've seen.

I was fiddling around on the PGA website about the whole "Tee It Forward" thing and they had this chart that said how far you would expect to hit each club based on driver carry distance... I know we have a master thread on distance with each club... here are the percentages... Note this chart only goes down to pitching wedge.... and denotes carry distances not total distance

Driver: 100%

3-wood: 90%

5-wood: 84%

4-iron/hybrid: 77%

5-iron: 72%

6-iron: 68%

7-iron: 64%

8-iron: 59%

9-iron: 54%

PW. : 49%

Do your CARRY distances fall in those lines? Or do you think the PGA of America is pulling hogwash?

Here is my 2¢:

Club               PGA %               My %            Difference

Driver:            100%                100%                  ---
3-wood:           90%                   91%                   1%
5-wood:           84%                   82%                   2%
4-iron/hybrid:   77%                   77%                   0%
5-iron:              72%                   73%                   1%
6-iron:              68%                   68%                   0%
7-iron:              64%                   64%                   0%
8-iron:              59%                   59%                   0%
9-iron:              54%                   52%                   2%
PW. :                49%                   45%                   4%

Hm-m-m-m-m. Pretty close. :-O

My PW is 50*. It's not a half swing. I just don't swing as fast. I used to hit a 9 iron from 150. I still can. Now I hit a 7 iron. I would hit too many pulls and hooks and the occasional straight shot and fades. That made it hard to score effectively. When I swing harder, my transition is not consistent. When I control my swing, my transition is much better.

My PW is also almost 50 degrees.

I also have a problem with sequencing during the transition, but if I slow down my swing all my clubs are affected equally. For example, if I drive 240 one day, then my PW is about 120, and if I drive 255 another day, my PW is about 127.

Even though my swing varies quite a bit from day to day (as I am just starting to learn how to swing properly), all my club's distance ratios seem to remain the same.

My distances for my irons do not vary very much except on days my bones are aching more than others. I have a different mentality when hitting approach shots than distance shots such as drives or fairway shots. My driver approach is much different than any other shot.

I would follow suit and post my club comparisons, but it appears that I am the typical golfer.  Those percentages pretty much match my clubs exactly.  And fairway bunkers are always exactly the right distance to be in play for me.

Same here, spot on for me, especially with the mid-irons (predicted value of 7I was withing 1 yard of my actual 7I distance).

    • It's likely per "category" of clubs, so irons would be one category, wedges would be a category, driver a category, fairway woods/hybrid a category, etc. They aren't going to charge you $50 per iron for a fitting. Almost all iron fittings are done with like a 6 or 7 iron, fitters don't carry full sets of every iron. So yes, if you use a 7 iron for the fitting and let's say you get fit into the P790 with a certain shaft, 1 degree flat and .5" longer than normal you would just order the full set of P790s with that shaft/lie angle/length combination and you'll be perfectly fine.
    • I think the $50 fitting price tag is per club. The clubs I am most interested in getting fitted for are irons. And I'd rather not spend a bunch on getting fitted for multiple irons. Would I be fairly safe to assume that choosing something like a 6 or 7 iron for fitting would likely relate to other lofts in the same configuration/make/model?
    • A Mevo is 500. Comes with little decals to hit balls inside too.
    • I replaced a 3 driving iron as it was called. If I hit it clean it went close to 180 like the hybrid does but it was very inconsistent. I had to aim left because it would fade and I could never hit it dead nuts straight. We have a lot of wind being by the ocean so a left to right wind was suicidal with that club for me. I don't have a lot of Shot Scope data so far that would show yardage as far as dispersion or proximity to hole goes, but so far everything is staying relatively tight. I am not spraying the ball, I feel like it goes where I aim, any thing off is user error and not the club.
    • Ok, great. Best of luck to you in the future. I gave you the answer for significantly less than $20k though, just sayin.
