Top game improvement irons?

Guess its personal preference, I was looking players irons but the r7 tps were both cast and chunky looking, I hated them and I am a Taylor Made guy at heart

Tried to hate the Callaways but they were just too pretty and sweet to hit! Pls they come with great shafts

I have to put another vote in for the Ping I5's. I tried the 10 series both G and I, and didn't care for either. So my fitter had me try an I5, and I almost knew instantly. The G10 was too super game improvement I thoight, and the I 10 was too small and almost felt blade like for me. The I5's are right inbetween the 2.

I couldn't be happier with the Pings I have now. For game inprovement irons aswell as players irons, Ping makes a great club. Im growing out of my Pings and I actually just picked up some Mizuno MP-60's, but thats just because I wanted a blade style iron with more workability.

When did you say to yourself, "I need some new irons with more workability" ??

I play Ping i5s and I love em. Have dropped my Index 7-8 strokes with them. . .

Not to be much of a contrarian, but to me the best game improvement irons are the ones that help you improve your game. The category game improvement irons usually means the ones that help you hit the ball best with poor swings.

So by my definition, my best game improvement irons have been my TourStage Z101s. Not very forgiving, but a little forgiving with great feedback. Flushed balls are like a drug with these. You KNOW when you missed, even a little bit.

When I learned how to draw my driver consistently. For the life of me I cannot draw my Pings on a consistent basis like I can the MP-60's and the driver. Not that a draw is "better", but I can control a draw better than controlling a straight shot if that makes any sense.

Also, I wanted a club with a thinner top line, smaller sole, and heavier swing weight. As my swing speed increased, I was having trouble predicting where the clubhead was going to end up at impact with the I5's. The I5's have a lighter swing weight than the MP-60's. I know I could get that changed, but along with the reasons I mentioned above and the fact that I grew out of my R-flex shafts on the Pings (which for me was causing a fade)........it was time for a change. Plus a smokin' deal on custom fit MP-60's with Project X shafts pretty much just pulled the trigger for me.

Resurrecting a really old thread. Bottom line I am looking for a more forgiving set of irons. I have been playing Callaway X22 tours with PX flighted 5.5 1/2 inch longer 2.5 degrees up right for 4 years and will be looking to trade them in before the start of next season. I am high handicap golfer who only plays on Sundays now that I am married. That being said if you guys could list a few sets i should check out it would be appreciated. Does not have to be the latest models as I often check out used clubs. I will be getting them fitted as far as length lie and grip go. Loot looking at sets over $499 price. Thanks.

Ping G20's feel great and are very easy to hit. If you can't find a set under $499 G15's are also very nice. I'm currently playing the G15's and I'm very happy with them.

You say you're having trouble with clean contact (fat and thin). Why not take a lesson or two and solve this problem before you buy new irons? After getting the contact problem resolved, you might consider an iron fitting. You don't know how irons will fly until you get a fitting. I worry you don't seem to be considering proper shaft for future irons.

As for  your irons list.. . Technically, the X20 irons (circa 2008) are SGI clubs. But, the irons had a Uniflex shaft (between R and S in flex). and don't balloon the short irons like you might get with G10 or Big Bertha irons fitted with stock shafts.

The X20 descendents , the RazrX and XHot irons, are classified as GI clubs. Stock shafts: RazrX irons had Uniflex shafts, while the XHots have either graphite or lighter-weight Step 85 steel shafts.

Also consider the RazrX-NG irons: Starting with the X18R (reissue), Callaway normally offers a variation on the previous marketing cycle's mainline iron to appeal to the $399 price point. This year, the RazrX-NG (new grooves) irons fit this slot.

I recently purchased a set of Cobra AMP Cell irons, silver, and would recommend you give them a try. With a steel shaft they go for around $499 at Goldsmith.

I was looking at the Amp line. They seem nice. My next issue is going to be flex. PX 5.5 flighted to my knowledge is an in between flex. I have no idea how the true temper 90 lite that are stock on the amps play.

My vote is for the Taylor made R7's.  I did some research awhile back, and found a lot of positive feedback for the forgiveness of the R7's and they didn't disappoint.  Then I bought a set of TM RAC LT's and gave my R7's to my nephew.  Both are good in my opinion.

Then i again my handicap is still 26 so take it for what its worth.

I love it when a 7 yr old thread is resurrected! The options change dramatically!! As a 19 hc I find the rocketbladez forgiving and not too ugly on the eye! I imagine there will be another price drop too after chrimbo!

Just bought a set of Wilson Staff D100 irons.  These are the most forgiving irons I have played.  The bounce on the sole helps it slide through the crappy turf on the courses I play.  I have the graphite shafts but the steel set is going for $499.  Golfsmith has a demo iron you can hit in the store.  You can order the set at Golfsmith or directly from the Wilson Staff website.
