I am working on making my transition better and the beginning of the downswing and was wondering what do you do? Do you "motorcycle rev" with your right hand, do you bring your right elbow to your right hip, do you feel like you are trying to pin something between your left arm and upper chest(arm pit area)?

What do you guys do?

Fear. :-P Right now, and for over a year now, my transition feel is ripping my lead shoulder up and back as fast as I can while driving my hands out towards the ball. It's all geared towards a shallower, flatter swing as I tend to be steep at best and OTT at worst. Actually the hands out part is new, but I've been working on the shoulder piece forever.

Yours in earnest, Jason.

I had to grab a club to think what I do when starting my downswing. The butt of my club is dropping toward the ball. My right arm stays pretty close to my right side. My right hip is rotating toward the bal, the left hip away and backl. My main swing thought is to keep my head still and throw the club at the inside back of the ball. When I do that, I hit a nice little draw. Over swinging is usually death.

Could you be more specific? What part of the transition are you trying to make "better"? In what way?

Also, note that "feel ain't real" so be careful when people give answers.

Sure, my priority piece right now is I guess you would say flattening the downswing, more specifically getting the club head inside the hands from the top of the backswing to shaft parallel to the ground on the downswing.

Okay. Unfortunately, and not to duck the question, but… this is one of those things that the feels can vary WILDLY from person to person. Some people feel the right wrist gives out and sags, others pull back with the right wrist. Others feel they turn their left forearm upward, others focus on the way the elbows work, or the shoulders, or the hands… It's a long list. My advice: make the move in a mirror (paying attention to not "cheating" it by flattening your shoulders) and see what it feels like to you.

Thanks, personally I'm feeling like I'm making somewhat of a loop at the top of the backswing. By flattening the shoulders you mean, not rotatating the wrists, but tilting the shoulders instead?

Yes, I mean flattening the shoulders. At the top of the backswing they're probably tilted 35° or so, so flattening them to 25° is bad.

Does your spine angle at setup kind of predefine at what angle your shoulders will be at the top of the backswing? Since your shoulders should be perpendicular to your spine, and should turn perpendicular to your spine?

    • Is it? I bought the Stack radar to replace my PRGR based on what Stack told me! When I am swinging for speed, the PRGR would miss 50%-80% of my backswings due to a higher speed. The stack seldom misses those- at least for me.
    • As an analyst by nature, I would like to compare the scores under both systems. It is something we can easily do if we have the data. I actually thought the new system was less fair to those whose game was on the decline - like mine! Old: Best 10 of last 20 scores with the .96 multiplier. Course handicap excluded course rating and overall par. New: Best 8/20. Course handicap includes course rating -par. My understanding is Stableford caps scores at Net double bogey like stroke play. If so, handicap should be slower to rise because you are only using 8 versus 10 scores. If I am missing something, I am curious enough to  want to understand what that may be. My home course tees that I play are 72.1/154 now. My best score out here is 82. When my game started to decline, my handicap didn’t budge for 13 rounds because of good scores in my first 8! I know I am an anomaly but my handicap has increased almost 80% in the past few years (with only a few rounds this year). For a few months I knew I was losing every bet because my game was nowhere near my handicap. I suspect I have steamrolled a few nuances but that shouldn’t matter much. When I have modeled this with someone playing the same tees and course, one good round, or return to form, will immediately reduce the handicap by some amount.
