My slice is starting to driving me crazy, if I give up golf, it will be just because of my slice with the driver!!

I know you read a lot of the technique threads on here and are trying to learn but I think you need to start understanding your priorities. Start a thread, I'd be happy to help you out.

@Jameson , this x 1000. You try a bunch of stuff but you have no idea whether it's even right.

@Jameson , you definitely should take Mike up on his offer. He's one of the best.

Well, I´m reading stuff here, and I have a teacher, also I´m reading LSW and Ben Hogan 5 fundamentals... Hope some piece of information is still good...

What have you learned from your teacher and the books that is going to help you with your slice?

What has helped me is too figure  out  which clubs when I lit them, naturely  goes straight and which ones curve when I hit the ball and just go with the flow.

My driver does straight, the rest of my clubs generally fade or draws and and I Intentionally try to curve my fairway woods and long irons.

My short irons and wedges can  be hit straight or curve right or left, so I tend to take extra time planning when I take out those clubs.

Well, a lot of information, just to recap:

- Stance: head behind, axis tilt.

- Grip: don´t mount my right hand.

- Add more speed on the downswing.

- Avoid coming over the top and move my head fordward.

It´s tough, really tough. The club that scares me most without any doubt.

Slice now a hook!

Hi guys, started playing semi seriously a few weeks ago after being a twice annual player for the last few years.

Started doing a bit of reading on how to play the game and very quickly realised I wasn't even holding the club or standing in remotely the right position!

Anyway, initially, like many others, I had a wicked slice which got worse the longer the club I had in my hand although I put that down to completely altering my grip and just get used to changing my stance. Fast forward a few weeks and quite a few rounds, I now seem to have developed a wicked hook. Again, it gets much worse the longer the club in my hand. From 7 iron down I am absolutely fine but with 4 iron and driver it's a nightmare.

Any ideas on why my slice/hook gets worse with longe clubs and how I have graduated from a slice to a hook? I know for sure my grip should be more neutral, I have my right hand almost on the back of the club.

I will hooefully post a video very soon

If your right hand is "almost on the back of the club" ... that indicates an incredibly strong grip, which usually promotes right to left ball flight.     Definitely weaken your right hand if you want to get a more neutral set up & minimize the hooking (my historical problem as well) ...

Had forgotten about this. seem to have gotten rid of my hook for now by doing the following... 1. Much more neutral right hand grip 2. Steeper swing, trying to replicate short irons swing and more inside takeaway 3. Tee ball lower or even hit off the ground, try and take small divot 4. Line up feet and shoulders correctly with a club etc Still inconsistent with my long irons and hybrid but hitting my driver quite nice just now

  • 3 weeks later...
Thanks for all advice previously, more than anything it was my grip that was causing problems. I hit 100 balls at the range today and hooked maybe 1 or 2 but a quick check showed my left hand had snuck round to the right. At least 90 of my 100 balls today were either a fade or a slice, worst slices were with the driver. Putting that down to the grip change, will investigate more if it persists although I feel much much more confident. No duffs, shanks or topping the ball either. All in all, making progress!

    • Have a 19° (moved to 20.5°) Titleist 915H. I just love the club. Beautiful feel off the sweetspot, high launch, soft landing. Versatile. In the future, with less overall speed I will replace my 4 and 5 irons with another hybrid, something around 26°.
    • Broke the head of a Stealth Plus on a warm up. TaylorMade send me a new head but I decided to upgrade it to the new IQ10 LS and pay the difference. While I was waiting for the 8° head to arrive at the store I messed around with all the multi brand putts they had available. I instantly liked a black TaylorMade Spider, not the new one but very similar. The weight felt perfect. Big line in the middle for easy alignment. I was playing and old Zebra so the change in technology and feel was huge. Fast review of both clubs.. Driver QI10 LS. I always hit to ball up in the sky. I was playing the stealth at 7° with a 60g X low flight shaft and I was still hitting it pretty high. With the QI10 playing it at 6° now is almost hard for me to hit it high, with the same shaft the ball comes out lower and with less spin. so I'm really happy with the change. Putter Spider. I love it. It took me an afternoon to figure out how to grip it (it comes with a superStroke grip) but after that it all came into place. More stable on short putts and a good weight to swing smoothly on long putts and with added forgiveness over my old zebra.
    • I have a 2h but we don’t get along anymore. It’s a bit of an abusive relationship - she gives me just enough hope once in a while that things are going to be better and then it’s back to the same old shit. I went to a PING fitting recently with the intention to replace the hybrid with a 5w or something, thinking maybe I’ll be better with a fairway wood than a hybrid. But it turns out the best club I hit that fits in that slot in the bag is another hybrid so I ordered it.
    • Day 547, May 2, 2024 18 holes with @DrizZzY using my TruStick®. Hit a LOT of really good shots today.
    • Not the last thing I bought or bought anything at all but Sun Day Red stuff seems a bit overpriced for it essentially being rebranded Nike apparel. I'm hearing the resale prices are wild though. Either way, I highly doubt I will indulge as I'm not much of a brand guy or a collector. But to keep up my super nice guy image have never turned down a gift though 😇 Tiger doesn't seem to sell stuff like MJ or Kanye did.
