Playing Alone

Based on my schedule and that of my friends, I have to play alone sometimes to get in my fill. That said, it's become a tough thing. If I'm playing poorly, I talk to myself and can really get off the rails pretty badly. If someone else is there, I'm much more likely to suppress some of that and stay focused.

Unfortunately for me most of my buddies are not in to golf. I end up playing as a single a majority of the time. For me it just seems to depend on the day on how much I'm going to enjoy it. Lately I've been in a competitive mood and am looking to get in to a league or tournaments to get my fix.

I played alone, again, last night. I am an introvert and enjoy the quiet time to myself.

The only downside for me is lost balls. Yesterday I was teeing off into the late evening sun. Hit my first tee shot and never saw it, not idea where it went. I then hit a provisional and never saw that one either. After riding around the entire hole a few times I never found either one. Disappointing and likely not the case if I had a playing partner keeping an eye out or helping me look.

The lost balls drive me nuts. You can usually feel a mishit, so when the contact felt solid and you lose it, it's really hard to absorb a penalty. Half the time, I'll just assume I'll find it, only to be wrong.

After a couple of those, I can fall in the trap of trying to watch my ball before I hit it. Then things really dissolve.

I also play alone and have lost a lot of balls in the setting sun.  I know some golfers think non-white golf balls are anathema but the Nike Volt-colored balls are very easy to see from a distance.  Of course, if the ball is completely obscured by high grass, leaves, etc, you're SOL but in that case you're SOL regardless of what color ball you're playing.

Yeah, my first drive felt real good. Based on "feel" I expected it to be on the left side of the fairway or maybe in the light rough. The second one I knew I pushed right as I was tentative with the swing and my weight didn't get forward.

If I find that first ball I break 90, instead settle for a 92, frustrating.

I am not opposed to using a bright color ball, but I don't think it will help see in blinding sun. The one advantage of the low sun is if you look for your ball with your back to the sun it really stands out.

You certainly won't see the ball as it flies into the sun but you can definitely see it if it lands in the fairway or light rough.
