Caddy Question

I am going to caddy for my instructor in an upcoming tournament he's participating in. I would like to know the basics of being a good caddy, dress code, etc. Any tips at all will be extremely helpful. Thanks

Do an internet search along the lines of "how to be a good caddy"

There's no need for someone to write you an essay when the information is already out there.

Google is for searching known information. Message boards are for sharing opinions and ideas. Could you explain to me how an internal combustion engine works, please?

Certainly.  Give me a call.

Google is a decent source.  However, some people prefer a more direct approach in discussions rather than random Google searches.  For instance, if I want to ask a question about how to fix a part on a 1997 Mazda Miata (which I have done), I will have more luck getting the correct information on a Mazda Miata enthusiasts forum (which I did).  In a forum, comments are peer reviewed and you can get additional information that may not be in a Wikipedia page.

Because the OP has a golf specific question, he naturally sought council at a golf specific forum.  He also chose a really good golf forum where most forum members are eager to help.  Most.

thank you, I wasn't searching for an essay on the basics like cleaning clubs, etc. I wanted some quick tips from experienced people so I know what's going on when I start. Thanks to you guys who posted links to other forum posts that was exactly what I was looking for.

I wasn't searching for an essay on the basics like cleaning clubs, etc. I wanted some quick tips from experienced people so I know what's going on when I start.

I've caddied in quite a number of local tournaments in the Pittsburgh area, including the 1992 Ladies US Open at Oakmont. Here are a few of things I think are important...

• Dress code: nice shorts (no blue jeans), tennis shoes (some courses do not allow caddies to wear soft-spikes), collared shirt

• Know your golfer:  what he wants on the tee, in the fairway and on or around the green

• Show up early and find out as much about the course if you are unfamiliar with it

• Know how to use a pin sheet

• Have a range finder, if permitted, for the tournament

• If you are not permitted to use a range finder, know where to find a sprinklerhead quickly and step off yardages accurately

• Usually, the caddie of the last person to putt will take the pin, and then replace it after everyone has putted

• Keep the conversations to a minimum with the other caddies during the course of the round

• Enjoy your time on the course. It is fun to be inside the ropes during a tournament.

Bingo.  If Steve Williams tried to caddy for Ben Hogan the way he does Adam Scott I suspect Ben would hit him over the head with his sand wedge on the third tee and then never hit into a sand trap for the rest of the round.
